Help DH and me solve this silly maths argument

ADayGivingMeHope · 04/06/2017 21:34

Ok it's not an AIBU but we need this argument settled!!

I am 30.

I just said to my DH that I am MORE than half his age...
We are talking about someone on TV who is 70
DH says I am LESS than half his age.

Half his age is 35. I am 40 years younger than him so surely I am MORE than half his age?

DH says half his age is 35 and I am 30 so I'm less than half his age...

Tell us who is right please!

Less

RaspberryPi1 · 04/06/2017 21:39

Dh. Maybe it's time to ltb

Iamcheeseman · 04/06/2017 21:39

DH

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 04/06/2017 21:39

Your DH is right.

MrsChopper · 04/06/2017 21:39

Defos your DH!

ADayGivingMeHope · 04/06/2017 21:39

Hassled I have had Wine too, I can't believe so many people think I'm wrong. Maybe I should switch my math brain off. I'm tired! 😂

It makes total sense to me that half his age is 35 so I am more than that at 40 years his junior! 😯 🙈

The innumeracy you're displaying here is honestly worrying for an adult.

RainbowPastel · 04/06/2017 21:40

Obviously your DH. Did you really need to ask?

DinosaurFarmer · 04/06/2017 21:40

Less than

MissBax · 04/06/2017 21:40

You are less than 35 so less than half his age.

ADayGivingMeHope · 04/06/2017 21:40

I think this is a 'phrasing' problem rather than a math problem, lol.

Tabymoomoo · 04/06/2017 21:40

Your logic is bonkers!!
You are 30 and half this guy's age is 35 so how can you possibly be more than half his age???

allegretto · 04/06/2017 21:41

I think you mean that you are more than half his age younger than him. But nobody actually says that so your DH is right!

ClopySow · 04/06/2017 21:42

You are more than half his age younger than him. But you're not more than half his age, you're less than half his age.

TizzyDongue · 04/06/2017 21:42

Darn it keep pressing post!!

While you are more than 35 years younger than him you are less than 35 years old.

The half age means 35 years old, it does not mean 35 years.

So you are less than half is age

Tabymoomoo · 04/06/2017 21:43

You are more than half his age younger than him. That would work but not just "I am more than half his age"

ClopySow · 04/06/2017 21:43

I love your logic though. I can totally see what you're thinking.

NoSquirrels · 04/06/2017 21:44

Your DH.

70/2 = 35.

You are 30, which is less than 35.

Your thinking is that there are 40 years between you, so 5 years "more" than 35. But that's not what the construction of the phrase relates to, so you are wrong I'm afraid.

You'd need to say he's more than twice my age for your way to be correct.

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 04/06/2017 21:44

Your DH is correct. Half his age is 35, you are 30. 30 is less than 35.

^^This. DH is right.

ADayGivingMeHope · 04/06/2017 21:44

Oh gosh I'm tired! 🙈
I think my brain go screwed in a bit skewiff this morning 🤣

obvsreasfornc · 04/06/2017 21:44

I think it is the phrasing of the term rather than the mathematics!

To me if someone was 'less' than half of someone's age, then you couldn't fit your age twice into the person who is older.

'More' than half of someone's age is fitting yourself twice into their age with some left over.

Ie this phrase 'look at that man and woman, she is more than half his age' could easily be said about a 70 year old man and a 30 year old woman.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 04/06/2017 21:46

Your DH is right.

If you had 70 biscuits and ate more than half of them would you have only eaten 30? No.

FlyingElbows · 04/06/2017 21:46

This is where maths and English do not get on! I totally understand your thinking (which is mathematically correct) but your husband's choice of language is correct in describing the scenario.

Smidge001 · 04/06/2017 21:47

DH is right!!

Try this logic...
What is half of 70?
35.
Is 30 more than or less than 35?
Less than.
So you are less than half his age.

In maths, it's 30 < (1/2 * 70)

SuperBeagle · 04/06/2017 21:47

Your husband is correct.
