Help DH and me solve this silly maths argument

Ok it's not an AIBU but we need this argument settled!!

I am 30.

I just said to my DH that I am MORE than half his age...
We are talking about someone on TV who is 70
DH says I am LESS than half his age.

Half his age is 35. I am 40 years younger than him so surely I am MORE than half his age?

DH says half his age is 35 and I am 30 so I'm less than half his age...

Tell us who is right please!

DH is right. That was my first thought. The replies on this thread are all very logical and intelligent but they have made my head spin, and if I hadn't been sure of the answer at first, I would be even less sure now!

If you said he's more than twice my age it'd be easier

It is a phrase thing, I've heard many a time people saying about hugh Hefner and the playgirl bunnies being 'less than half his age'
Nobody is disputing that 30 is less than 35 obviously.

DH is correct. I can see where you've gone wrong though. By saying you're more than half his age, you're saying that you're even younger than half his age - I think. Maths is a complete mystery to me anyway.

Think of it like a journey, which is 70 miles in total. At the 30-mile point, are you halfway there? No - you're less than halfway there.

As PPs have said, it's a phrasing issue.

You're thinking of it as (less than half) his age; your DH is thinking of it as (less than) half his age. I've used brackets in the mathematical way there - sort of.

It's definitely phrasing and bad English. Everyone knows 35 is half of 70 and 30 is clearly less than that.

It's phrasing, not maths, but your husband is right. Half of 70 is 35. You are 30, which is less than half of 35. You are less than half the 70 year old's age.

The key question is how much wine have you had? More than half a bottle or less than half a bottle??

Dh is right. Half is 35. 30 is lower than 35. If you were more than half is age, you would be 36+.
