Listening to TM outside Downing Street vs JC - I think she may have just won the election - saying what people wnat to hear and hopefully some of what she says needs to be done will be followed through with.

Eavesdropping by Security Services is already in place. What TM wants to introduce is total State Control of what you see

I agree with this, the Terrorism Acts are already very far ranging, the powers are there, the resources not so much.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 04/06/2017 12:51

JaniceBattersby I agree with you, I don't think people recognise the wider implications of the laws which Theresa would like to be in place in regards to stricter controls of the internet. It's a serious issue, and all people think is "I have nothing to hide" without realising it's not just about them and their humdrum lives.

gunting · 04/06/2017 12:51

@PollyPerky have you not seen the video of May 2 years ago, at a policing conference? She was told by a senior policeman that they have no intelligence anymore and cuts were putting us at risk, her reply? 'Stop scaremongering' Shock

PollyPerky · 04/06/2017 12:52

Reading MN you'd swear a chunk of posters weren't even aware that the Tories have been the ones in power for years now!

Yes and it's going to take decades to clear up the debt and deficit left by GB and team.

If you had any grasp of economics you'd realise you can't turn an economy round in a few years no matter how much we'd all like it.

noblegiraffe · 04/06/2017 12:52

Amber Rudd as Home Secretary knows where the magic money tree is. In an off-shore tax haven. Hers was in the Bahamas.

MaryTheCanary · 04/06/2017 12:52

She'll almost certainly win the election anyway. But it won't be because of this. If you look at the data, terrorist attacks mostly just polarize even further the views people already have about terrorism. Those who believe that this is the fault of TM, the Conservatives, the "west" (vaguely defined) or whatever, will just believe so even more strongly.

TheNaze73 · 04/06/2017 12:52

Well, I'm visiting relatives in Hertfordshire today & I've just witnessed Labour campaigning despite what Corbyn said.
What utterly despicable shameless wankers they are.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/06/2017 12:53

I don't think anyone would make the claim that the shoot to kill policy has absolutely no risks of innocent people being harmed

But to have to within seconds weigh up the danger of the situaion and others and make that choice is what highly trained officers will have been trained to do to keep the public safer

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 04/06/2017 12:53

+home*

No gilly is saying that they are terrorists

One of us is missing the point completely

I think its you

gunting · 04/06/2017 12:53

@TheNaze73 local campaigning is still going ahead for all parties.

Sallystyle · 04/06/2017 12:53

Nope, still not voting for her.

She was always going to win anyway.

PollyPerky · 04/06/2017 12:53

gunting- where do you think the funds for the HOme Office come from? She was given a budget. Direct your anger at the then chancellor.

And I don't see the virtue in quoting the police. They are not always right and are very political in themselves.

christinarossetti · 04/06/2017 12:53

Why is it only the right who insist on talking about 'endless pots of money' and 'magic money trees'?

As soon as someone makes a comment about the reasonableness of funding public services, this is what gets trotted out.

Almost as if no-one on the right can even think coherently about economics anymore.

Almondbrew · 04/06/2017 12:54

"This isn't a Hollywood film where at the last dramatic moment someone swoops in with a rousing speech and is then swept along to victory atop the shoulders of her grateful citizens."

Well said Sqoosh but year sod shit reality TV and Internet memes have distorted people's sense of reality.

squoosh · 04/06/2017 12:55

Yes and it's going to take decades to clear up the debt and deficit left by GB and team.

Clear up the deficit? I hate to break this to you but they've increased the deficit.

BeyondStrongAndStable · 04/06/2017 12:55

National campaigning is suspended

Local campaigning is not

gunting · 04/06/2017 12:55

@PollyPerky George Osborne isn't in politics anymore, and TM could have had some backbone and pushed for extra funding.

RoseTico · 04/06/2017 12:56

No she didn't. We've only had a Tory Govt for 2 years!

You may be thinking of her time under the libdem/tory coalition where she was hamstrung by the libdems wanting to water down everything the tories wanted to do.

Oh trust me, many of us remember when the Tories had their muzzles taken off. We saw how fast things deteriorated. We saw how food banks started popping up everywhere. For the first time I started to see homeless people on the streets of the small town I live in.

I still vividly remember the horror of George Osborne's smirking face saying that he was going to cut WTCs, and how the House of Lords had to quickly step in to save nearly 2 million families from financial disaster.

If you think things have improved in area of society over the last two years, please enlighten me?

christinarossetti · 04/06/2017 12:56

'The police aren't always right and they're political.'

You're becoming a parody of yourself polly.

Unfortunately, the police were right when they pointed out to May years ago that decreased funding would put innocent lives at risk.

RoseTico · 04/06/2017 12:57

*any area

gunting · 04/06/2017 12:57

Fucking hell, even Farage is sticking the boot in. What on earth.

To think Teresa May has just won the election?
tookawhile · 04/06/2017 12:57

Vivienne Yours is a powerful post from someone who has relevant experience and knows what they are talking about.

I'd be interested to know what steps could be taken, in your opinion, to help with the current situation.

I appreciate that's not easy to answer but you probably have some ideas...

FeelTheNoise · 04/06/2017 12:58

She's a dirty warmongering disgrace with blood on her hands

Missingthepoint · 04/06/2017 12:58

The Naze. - only national campaigning has been suspended for the day, local campaigning is continuing by ALL parties.

BillSykesDog · 04/06/2017 12:59

I'm not sure some state control isn't a good idea. Going back 20 years there was state control of what you could see. You couldn't even see an erect penis in a porn mag. If you wanted hardcore porn you had to go to the Netherlands or have contacts who could get it. And that was still relatively tame.

Now the most extreme pornography you can imagine is available at the click of a button to 12 year old schoolboys and girls. As is violent extremist material of any stripe, racist, Islamist, white supremacist, pro-paedophile..literally anything.

State control is not always a negative. The world felt a lot safer when the state did have some control.
