Listening to TM outside Downing Street vs JC - I think she may have just won the election - saying what people wnat to hear and hopefully some of what she says needs to be done will be followed through with.

Yes gunting that seems to be the case!

It's us on the internet who will be end up charged with "hate" crimes for questioning the policies.

flapflops · 04/06/2017 12:32

Didn't she cut the numbers in the police? Is she planning to reinstate them all after the election?

Badbadbunny · 04/06/2017 12:32

she had opportunity to sort things out during the last 7 years

No she didn't. We've only had a Tory Govt for 2 years!

You may be thinking of her time under the libdem/tory coalition where she was hamstrung by the libdems wanting to water down everything the tories wanted to do.

flapflops · 04/06/2017 12:32

Oh and she's fucked up the NHS too. Police and health care. Great job.

desertmum · 04/06/2017 12:32

I have nothing to hide, on FB, on here, on any social media site. If people think that emails and FB statuses and other areas of social media haven't been being scanned for phrases and key words for many then I think they are very naive. If they want to scan my posts about my dogs, cat, the bees in my garden and what wine I am currently drinking in order to keep me and my family and friends safe in this country they are welcome to.

They don't actually read everyone's emails etc. they simply have scanning software that looks for certain phrases and code words that are flagged as suspicious.

I have lived in countries where listening (ie. listening for phrases and key words) in telephone conversations was the norm - and you know what? I was never arrested, harassed, had my house searched, my car stopped nor was I ever stopped from entering or exiting said countries - Why? Becuase I am not a terrorist.

homebythesea the bad guys will find their way around the issue.

It will be used to make our internet like China's, where we only see what they want you to see, you think the media manipulates us now? It will be ten times worse if she has her way.

You don't fight terrorism by taking away people's civil liberties, you fight terrorism by tackling the ideology and the underlying causes.

FannyWisdom · 04/06/2017 12:33

Forgot about Dave already Bunny?

antimatter · 04/06/2017 12:34

MI5 currently has 3000 suspects it is investigating for activity ranging from attack plots, to support activities and funding, across 500 investigations. It also has a pool of 20,000 former suspects, among whom for instance was the Manchester arena attacker Salman Abedi.

she must have known the numbers before calling this election?
why did she called election??? for political gain and not to strengthen security!

and there are more police cuts coming up!!
Amber Rudd refuses to rule out further police cuts

Tories are in the pockets of the Saudis as someone up this thread said!

Charmageddon · 04/06/2017 12:34

Not when the Tories messed about in Kuwait then?

You mean when Kuwait was invaded?

And there was a global alliance to liberate the country?

noblegiraffe · 04/06/2017 12:34

Well luckily because it's an election campaign, journalists (not the public because she won't talk to them) will have the chance to ask her over the next couple of days what she exactly she has in mind.

Put more money into policing? Stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia?

Or will it be ID cards and more resources for the government to read our emails and check our browsing history?

Or will she just dodge the question with vague platitudes about more powers and being strong? And then implement the curtailment of civil liberties stuff when she gets re-elected.

Place your bets.

DJBaggySmalls · 04/06/2017 12:35

Go on say it - The Innocent have Nothing to Fear.

Eavesdropping by Security Services is already in place. What TM wants to introduce is total State Control of what you see

How can you vote for policies you dont even understand?

antimatter · 04/06/2017 12:36

Badbadbunny what has she done in the last 2 years then????
what steps and actions?

gillybeanz · 04/06/2017 12:36

Tbh, I think she lost it when she said 3 suspects were shot.
Since when did we shoot suspects.

noblegiraffe · 04/06/2017 12:36

Why? Becuase I am not a terrorist.

Out of interest are you a white non-muslim?

Because I understand that ethnic minorities do find themselves targeted by these sorts of activities even when innocent.

If you think TM's ability to read a statement written for her and then turn around and leave without answering any question is a winning PM quality your bar is set too low.

paxillin · 04/06/2017 12:37

Do you think she has won the election? The police remember the cuts.

To think Teresa May has just won the election?
AstrantiaMajor · 04/06/2017 12:37

Standing there ringing her hands saying "WE must do more". She was Home Secretary for goodness sake. She could have done so much more. To me she has just lost any of her remaining credibility

To see her there looking calm and dignified, whilst last night the NHS staff were once again dealing with the real horrors of these attacks. 12 hour shifts, low pay, low morale, but still just getting on with the job.

Th fact that Corbyn is the alternative makes me want to weep.

BTG3385 · 04/06/2017 12:38

Enough is enough. Well come on then cleverclogs TM let's us in on what you plan to do? She is pissing me off by the day and Sadiq Khan with his London is the safest global city! What kind of a bullshit statement is that.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 04/06/2017 12:38

Desertmum it's not just about spying on what we do, it's about controlling what we see. It's the 21st century version of burning books. When you take knowledge away from people and they can only see what they want you to see, you begin the slippery slope of taking away their freedom.

jamie2 · 04/06/2017 12:38

I agree with the op that this speech has probably won her the election as she has echoed the views and feelings of many of the electorate

roundaboutthetown · 04/06/2017 12:38

She's a politician. If she didn't know what to say now, she would deserve to lose the election. Knowing what to say now - well, whoopdeedoo, what a surprise! Doing anything effectual on the other hand - there's no record of her having done much of that. It's just promise after broken promise on anything that she thinks will make her sound tough, and ignoring an awful lot of everything else.

BeesOnTheWing · 04/06/2017 12:38

What a choice.

homebythesea · 04/06/2017 12:40

JC on shoot to kill - forced to row back on original position due to sensible outrage from his own party. This is not the person I want in charge

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-34840708

Oblomov17 · 04/06/2017 12:40

"your bar is set too low."

TM? No thanks.
JC? God, give us strength.

Where does that leave us? Screwed. I fear. What a mess.
