Listening to TM outside Downing Street vs JC - I think she may have just won the election - saying what people wnat to hear and hopefully some of what she says needs to be done will be followed through with.

portia that is scandalous if true

"he alleged suicide bomber, Salman Abedi, was part of an extremist group, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, that thrived in Manchester and was cultivated and used by MI5 for more than 20 years."

thatdearoctopus · 04/06/2017 14:53

She's not got charisma like he has

That's the funniest thing I've read in weeks.

ChasedByBees · 04/06/2017 14:54

She's effectively made a campaign speech whilst other parties leaders do not have the same platform. Pretty disgraceful to be honest.

greenlavender · 04/06/2017 14:54

How anyone can believe anything that comes out of her mouth seriously escapes me. It's not so long ago she was in Saudi, selling more arms. She was Home Secretary for SEVEN YEARS and did nothing. She only faces British people when she feels like it, or when it's in her interest.

wisemonkey · 04/06/2017 14:56

I agree OP. I don't like her but I think she'll win and the country and the economy will be safer under her than Corbyn. I hope she has a reduced majority and so has to be a bit humbler.

Topseyt · 04/06/2017 14:58

There was nothing in TM's speech with which I would have disagreed, but she still won't get my vote.

She made huge cuts to the police service as Home Secretary. Sadly, it has left us all vulnerable, and it has come back to bite TM on the arse.

Whoever gets into power on 9th June will surely have to review and reverse many of those cuts in order to ensure that the police have sufficient resources to operate at the current required level.

I do hope that isn't Theresa May, but even if it is, surely she will have to make another u-turn on what was one of her cornerstone austerity policies.

I don't plan to vote for someone whose policies have left us more vulnerable.

hackmum · 04/06/2017 14:58

The Tories have been convincingly ahead in the polls from the outset. Labour has simply managed to cut that lead. I would feel happier about May leading the fight against terrorism if she wasn't selling arms to the home of Islamic extremism.

GretchenFranklin · 04/06/2017 14:59

We have just had lunch with a couple - they are both met police officers, one is a DCI, the other a DS. They are both voting conservative.

I don't believe you. You have just made that up.

Peter Kirkham, fmr Senior Investigating Officer, the Met. has a very different take on things from your invisible friends.

CitrusSun · 04/06/2017 15:00

Yup, spot on, shut down the truth, scared the corruption will be too visible, it's obvious even to the blind, rich people protect rich people and there's enough selfish people in this country to keep this lot in power

BillSykesDog · 04/06/2017 15:04

Hahaha. Poster claiming every single police officer in the country is not voting Tory. Classic MN hubris.

BeyondDespairandRepair · 04/06/2017 15:08

I aim not to sure what we can do with the the Saudi problem. I would love to hear why we wear lid gloves with a them. Boris spoke out about Saudi with refreshing candour and he was slapped down. There must be good reasons behind it. Perhaps element of keep your enemies close..

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 04/06/2017 15:11

Unfortunately I can confirm that I know a lot of police officers who are voting Tory. Many more than will be voting Labour.

Police are, unsurprisingly, humans with opinions that hinge on more than a single issue.

MotherOfBleach · 04/06/2017 15:12

I'm confused. What did she actually say that's worth applauding?

Enough is enough, we all know that, we all agree but what is she actually going to do about it?

I didn't hear her promise much tbh.

Are we going to better fund the police and intelligence forces? Are we going to better train intelligence forces? Are we going drop more bombs in Syria?

All she talked about was controlling the internet. We already have the power to shut down websites and apps that promote hate speech how is what she is chattering about today different to the power we already have? Is there going to be more intelligence people working on it? What?

I understand it's early days and these questions will be answered in time, I'm just confused as to why what she did say is being celebrated. She didn't seem to say much about anything from what I heard.

WalkingOnLeg0 · 04/06/2017 15:12

Childishly simplistic response to think that if we stop selling arms to the Saudis it will stop Islamic terrorism. What it would do is stop any influence we have with them and probably make the world a more dangerous place.

PortiaCastis · 04/06/2017 15:13

And I only know one PCSO because that's all we have left here but she's voting LibDem

Husk · 04/06/2017 15:14

There's a lot fools don't realise in that cutting the Police by 20,000 doesn't increase security for ordinary people.

stereolove · 04/06/2017 15:15

I hope to all that is holy that people see through her 'prepared statement'. She has a dreadful record on crime, punishment and security, with a tendency towards creating a police state. I for one do not want to sacrifice my civil liberties so she can spy on anyone she finds suspicious.
Where does her list of suspicious people end? You know the story, "first they came for the muslims"...

The way to end extremism is to cut off funding and encourage tolerance, education and a bit of patience. The current rhetoric about banning muslims and destroying isis et al does nothing but drive the disaffected into the arms of radicals.

waitforitfdear · 04/06/2017 15:17

Of course she's going to win she always was,

However let's see what she's actually going to do because to me lighting candies and peace vigils ain't working

derxa · 04/06/2017 15:21

What a nasty opening post. Any prime minister has to speak out on an occasion like this. As ever Lass you speak with common sense.

derxa · 04/06/2017 15:23

I for one do not want to sacrifice my civil liberties so she can spy on anyone she finds suspicious. I wouldn't mind since I've got absolutely nothing to hide.

SequinsOnEverything · 04/06/2017 15:24

she appears in control and strong

Does she?! Nothing I've seen suggests that.

CitrusSun · 04/06/2017 15:24

I didn't say anything about if we stop selling arms to the Saudis it'll stop terrorism, so not sure where the childish comment comes from, I was questioning the morality of it, the collusion and the party's unwillingness to be transparent on the topic. But hey, you seem to need to win, have it your way, bye, bye.

Petronius16 · 04/06/2017 15:26

Agree with waitforit. As someone who's already voted Labour (postal vote) I don't think yesterday will change the result – May 9th we'll have a Tory government. Any hate in the campaign hasn't come from Corbyn – the Tories have pumped out YouTube videos, heavily edited to change what he actually said. Nasty, to say the least.

His views on violence will do for him and I doubt whether anyone thinks Dianne Abbot will do any good in whatever job she has.

Other points made – Tony Blair, yes, guilty as charged over Iraq alongside a few other people who messed up the Middle East including the Whitehall pen pusher who drew straight lines on a map in the 1920's ignoring centuries of tribal boundaries.

Corbyn sharing a platform with IRA. In 1995 Trump paid $200 dollars to sit at an IRA fund raising event in New York and shook Adam's hand in front of everyone. Every government has had talks with terrorists, including Thatcher.

Cause of 2008 financial crash. Started with Thatcher's de-regulation of the City, continued with the collapse of the sub-prime market in US, “As the credit crisis erupted in August 2007 with the failure of two Bear Stearns hedge funds, Lehman's stock fell sharply.

www.investopedia.com/articles/economics/09/lehman-brothers-collapse.asp#ixzz4j2fQJR42

What Gordon Brown did was to stop some of our Banks collapsing – RBS for one – if that had happened just think what would have happened to millions of people in this country if the Banks had to renege on mortgages – loss of home is just the start. Labour did not cause the crash, the bankers did.

TreeTop7 · 04/06/2017 15:26

Her robust speech today won't do her any harm but it's irrelevant. The Cons will win comfortably on Thursday. The Labour surge assumes turnout of 80% amongst 18-30y olds which would be very unusual. It also assumes that every one of them would vote Labour, which they won't. Many of them are in Labour safe seats anyway - Labour needs swathes of young adults voting in places like Cardiff North and Corby for a difference to be made.

On here and in the Guardian, it's rightly pointed out that she didn't do much about terrorism as Home Sec - and she cut police budgets. However, no one else seems to be taking her to task over this. They prefer to deride JC's approach as sitting down to tea and biscuits with terrorists. Not that I know what the answer is! It seems like a gigantic and impenetrable problem.

brasty · 04/06/2017 15:26

The Saudi Government fund wassihibism propoganda in Britain. Although not terrorist, it is an extreme version of Islam. The Government should be encouraging moderate Islam, it actually does the opposite and both Labour and Conservative have a history of doing this.
