Listening to TM outside Downing Street vs JC - I think she may have just won the election - saying what people wnat to hear and hopefully some of what she says needs to be done will be followed through with.

tookawhile Both. Massively in both. But also back-office functions. Intelligence officers. Undercover informants. Properly trained people to investigate online crime. Access to the Dark Web. Quadruple or more the number of people who can conduct forensic examinations of computers and mobile phones (the wait when I left was 3 months for non-urgent phones and 12 months for computers). The list goes on.

And it takes time and money.

Morale in the police is at catastrophically low levels. That's why people like me left. I was an experienced detective trained to very high levels of interviewing, with all sorts of clearances, working in very specialised areas of investigation as well as day to day crime. I worked an average of 80hrs a week. When I left I ran my duties for my whole career, and I had done more hours in overtime in a decade than I'd taken as annual leave. And I was not an important officer, just a normal one. The firearms guys are still more overworked. I was burned out and disillusioned. So I got out.

And I miss it so much I could cry. That's the paradox of the police. Love the Job, but at what cost for the individual?

roundaboutthetown · 04/06/2017 13:49

Whilst continuing to underfund schools, she will probably now require them to do more to detect, report and educate those deemed susceptible to terrorist propaganda.

homebythesea · 04/06/2017 13:53

Ok gillybeanz so what do you propose the police should have done in order to prevent the scenario you describe?

callmeadoctor · 04/06/2017 13:54

Are Mumsnetters all Labour supporters then? Does that mean that you are all going to vote for Corbyn?

TatianaLarina · 04/06/2017 13:56

I'm a Labour supporter, voting LibDem.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/06/2017 13:57

What a nasty opening post. Any prime minister has to speak out on an occasion like this.

gillybeanz · 04/06/2017 13:57

home
Exactly what they did, if they managed to keep innocents safe.

I don't think our PM should be advocating shooting suspects, like I said in all my posts Confused

Do you think all suspects are guilty and we should just shoot in case?

ElsieMc · 04/06/2017 13:57

Credit to Emily Thornberry this morning, not a woman I normally have any time for, being invited to comment on cutbacks in the police and she refused point blank to answer that because she did not want to make capital out of last night's events in direct contrast to the Welsh leader who went straight for it. She hit the right note and yes, it is all about perceptions.

This election has been the most hate filled and horrible I have ever witnessed . From Nicola Sturgeon, so filled with hatred for anyone opposed to or who would deny her her obsession that it is now sad and pitiful to watch.

And stand up Tim Farron (who lives locally to me) exposed as a sneering, self righteous primary school bully on the leadership debate. Shame for his workers who do at least bother to call and chat with voters. We live in a marginal seat area and I have not seen Labour nor the Conservatives - where are you?

I am a floating voter but cannot bring myself to vote for Corbyn, who has the best manifesto, all we have not been offered are free bmws, but who seems to be hiding John O'Connell or whatever he is called in a cupboard somewhere, such a sinister, angry individual.

I heard Corbyn speak prior to May and he sounded tired, muted, weak and unconvincing on terrorism and this is his Achilles heel. Not convinced by Theresa May's speech, a charisma bypass is in operation, she at least sounded like she meant it.

FoxyRoxy · 04/06/2017 13:59

Yabu and since national campaigning is supposed to be suspended today she was also massively disrespectful. She is the prime minister, this is all happening on her watch, under police cuts she has implemented. Saying "enough is enough" after she was Home Secretary for years and now pm holds little weight.

WalkingOnLeg0 · 04/06/2017 14:02

Yes Rufus it was from the BBC interview where a complaint about it was rejected four times previously under the BBC’s own editorial standards policies, before the Trust (no bias there then) finally ruled against it. The BBC disagreed with the finding and did not see any grounds to discipline their political editor.

You see Jeremy Corbyn did actually say these things and if he felt they were incorrect he could come out and say he does actually support a shoot to kill policy, but he never has. Just like he has never said the IRA killings were wrong, or that he ever would use Trident. Its not hard to work out what Corbyn believes, he has been saying it for years.

Missingthepoint · 04/06/2017 14:03

I do not trust the Tories in respect of NHS or Education But my impression of TM this morning was of one incredibly angry woman who is prepared to say unpalatable things and means what she says. JC does not come over as determined. You don't have to like people, sometimes respect has to be enough.

Middleoftheroad · 04/06/2017 14:04

I think her speech writer captured what some want to here. They used the word Islam I think rather than IS and ISIS - would need to re-watch and apologies if that has already been said. For me though, I'm not sure that saying enough is enough works.

GretchenFranklin · 04/06/2017 14:05

No.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH implies frustration with 7 years of her own policy response.

What on earth was she doing as Home Sec/PM if she has pursued policies of 'Tolerance of extremism' ?

Almondbrew · 04/06/2017 14:06

"I'm a Labour supporter, voting LibDem." that's great in areas where lib dem is more likely to win a majority than labour.

homebythesea · 04/06/2017 14:08

ElsieMc unlike her boss who mentioned police cuts in his first comments on camera

gillybeanz if police officers are called to an incident involving people being mown down and stabbed by people reported to have suicide vests on and they see 3 people in the area with something strapped to their chests running away then yes they should be shot. What's the alternative- ask them politely if they were responsible and then shoot? These are split second decisions and the primary aim is to prevent injury and loss of life. By definition all people shot in those circs are "suspects" in the sense that they have not been charged and tried in court.

Ceto · 04/06/2017 14:08

It's Labour that is actually promising to give more resources to policing, not the Conservatives. If TM had actually done anything other than run down police resources over the last 7 years I might have more faith in her now.

Charmageddon · 04/06/2017 14:10

They used the word Islam I think rather than IS and ISIS

I'm pretty sure she used Islamist rather than Islam, which is right.

Also, Amber Rudd on Peston naming & calling out specifically the grooming & weaponising of young men - again, long overdue & right.

Spectre8 · 04/06/2017 14:11

Look Labour and the recession left this country on its knees we had to make cuts. We all knew it and at the time nd so a coalition government was formed (Con and Lib Dems) when those police cuts were made so its not just Tories fault. If cuts to police weren't made where should they have been made. It might be easy to jump on things like foreign aid or other projects but you have to take into consideration that money was already tied up and promised in contracts already by Labour. Commitments you can't just walk out on no matter how much you to want to, commitments that might cost more to walk away from than it is to continue on with them.

People don't want cuts made to welfare, don't want cuts to NHS, don't want cuts to police, don't want cuts made to transport. Don't want to be taxed more, don't want to pay for their care in old age, don't want to pay to go to uni, public sector want to be paid more ...I mean you are never to going to please anyone at this rate.

Almondbrew · 04/06/2017 14:13

"'enough is enough'
So what exactly does that mean op? "

i have been known to rant this at my lovely dc in frustration, when my parenting approach didn't get me anywhere and i was temporarily clueless as to how to address unhelpful naughty behaviour. it's an expression of exasperation not a comment that suggests any leadership or potential for workable strategy.

WalkingOnLeg0 · 04/06/2017 14:14

Ceto What use is shaking the magic money tree and paying off the police if you don't give them the power to use deadly force and the political backing to feel able to use it.

LittleBooInABox · 04/06/2017 14:17

She's got my vote, I was on the fence this morning. But after watching that speech. I will vote Tory.

BuzzKillington · 04/06/2017 14:21

We have just had lunch with a couple - they are both met police officers, one is a DCI, the other a DS. They are both voting conservative.

As one of them said, Corbyn's 'bobbies on the beat' might look good but won't help anyone.

Almondbrew · 04/06/2017 14:21

"She's got my vote, I was on the fence this morning. But after watching that speech. I will vote Tory." Really? why?

bigmack · 04/06/2017 14:21

The idea that TM should be elected based on a speech (which she probably didn't write) given in response to a terrorist atrocity is distasteful to me.

Spectre8 · 04/06/2017 14:22

WalkingOnLeg0 agree with what you said 100%
