AIBU to want to start a boycott of American goods ?

No idea how to start but seeing as #45 thinks the Paris deal was a con to take money from America - I want to hit him where it hurts. Everything America now produces to me is tainted and covered in the blood of our children - very dramatic but long term the truth.

Hmmmmm
First thought not sure about boycotts. BUT this is massive.

MorrisZapp · 01/06/2017 23:06

You want me to boycott the new season of Orange is the New Black? Not happening.

Poshtottykins · 01/06/2017 23:09

To be honest - yes I think I do want you to - I want to send a message that this is fucking unacceptable but hey if missing a TV show would upset you more than your children starving/drowning/dying of thirst/extreme weather/long term global poverty etc - then of course your excused

That means you will never use Google, Yahoo, Facebook. Amazon, Ebay, McDonalds. Sky, Virgin, Coke, Pepsi, any of the nig name coffee shops.

Go on then. Lets us know how it goes.

GladAllOver · 01/06/2017 23:09

big name

Poshtottykins · 01/06/2017 23:12

Think I did say I have no idea how to start and it's probably not even remotely practical but I also have no other idea how we can react to this.

Do you know what @Poshtottykins , I'm with you. I'll never manage an out and out boycott but I'll certainly aim for a reduction.

How do we manage without google?

MorrisZapp · 01/06/2017 23:18

Sorry, what's provoked this? I get that the USA is an environmental obscenity but has something just got worse?

DancingLedge · 01/06/2017 23:23

Way way worse.
Trump just pulled out of the Paris Agreement.

Make American Coal Great Again

Poshtottykins · 01/06/2017 23:25

Trump just withdrew America from the Paris Accord - the only other countries not in it are Syria and Nicaragua. He says that the accord and therefore climate change is just a con for the rest of the world to take American jobs and American money.

MorrisZapp · 01/06/2017 23:26

What a monumental bellend.

SuperBeagle · 01/06/2017 23:29

Nothing has changed. It was only signed a year ago. Give it less than 4 years and Trump will be out of office and everything will return to the status quo aka doing nothing but pretending you are because you're signed to an agreement

crazywriter · 02/06/2017 00:49

Not possible for me. The industry I work in involves American TV, Google, Netflix, Facebook, and many more American products. Even if I wanted to (and I don't think boycotts like this work--just look at the Nestlé boycott) I'd be screwed for work and I'm going to put my family first. Oh and I live right on the border to the USA so we're affected by a lot of American changes.

Drawward · 02/06/2017 01:33

Interestingly I just looked up the company that hosts this site DSC.
They claim to be an UK LTD with the details
DSC Ltd
72 Northways
College Crescent
London NW3 5HD
But there is no listing for them at companies house so they could be based anywhere.

RhythmAndStealth · 02/06/2017 01:48

Trump in stupid selfish act shocker.

Guepe · 02/06/2017 01:49

It's very difficult to boycott all American products.

What I've been doing, since Trump first tried to introduce the Muslim ban, is buying non-American alternatives wherever possible. I'm still using Netflix, for example, but won't buy American food products, clothing and alike.

piglover · 02/06/2017 01:54

Remember that the only reason the loathsome orange baboon won the election was because of the archaic system of the electoral college. Hillary won about 3m more actual votes. Next year are mid-term elections and hopefully his spineless party will be given a bloody nose by the electorate which might actually make them stand up against him.

WellThatSucks · 02/06/2017 01:57

Don't boycott American companies and products because of this bloviating windbag. No matter what this ignorant dick of a President says most American states, companies and people are on board with the Paris Accord, are already abiding by it and will continue to abide by it. No way are state governors and giant corporations who have spent years and billions replacing infrastructure and reconfiguring plants to use cleaner and cheaper energy sources going to roll everything back so they can use coal instead. It's another empty gesture playing to his base, another promise he really can't keep. The withdrawal Trump has decided on doesn't take effect until the day after the 2020 election anyway so, hopefully, the first job of our next President (because Trump will not be reelected) will be to sign an executive order rescinding this decision.

Atenco · 02/06/2017 03:51

I've been boycotting American products, as much as I able, since the Second Gulf War. It's not always possible to implement a 100% boycott but if we can lower their profits by even 10% that will really hurt.

SuperBeagle · 02/06/2017 04:03

Atenco Are you boycotting the products of the other countries involved?

Bubblesdays · 02/06/2017 04:05

I've see mayor of Pittsburgh today say they're still going to honour the Paris agreement regardless and a couple of others so I hold out hope.
If your going full 100% boycott though you will have to include mumsnet, who use various American companies technologies in the running of th site

Ginger782 · 02/06/2017 04:13

Remember,

every dollar you spend is a vote for the type of world you want to live in.

I understand your anger OP. I think it's easy to become overwhelmed when trying to instigate change because it seems impossible. Remember the above phrase (not just when choosing whether you support American products, but all things in life) and you're doing your part.

MrKaplan · 02/06/2017 04:16

Already vetoed a holiday to The states this year (friends and dp really wanted to go). We can go in 4 years time.

hellokittymania · 02/06/2017 05:05

That would mean not having Reese's peanut butter cups. I don't think I am that strong.
