A friend of a friend on Facebook put up a post about how racist Britain is..

It was followed by lots of comments agreeing with her. Someone said British people don't know what culture is, let alone British culture and another said 'Uk culture? please, what culture would the UK have if it wasn't for immigrants'.

Isn't this racism in itself, in some form? I dunno, it's just bothered me.

Is it racist to accuse a nation of being racist? Putting the pedantics around racism/xenophobia/bigotry to one side, your actual question is an exercise in logical absurdity so I'm not going to address it directly. What I will say though is that, in my experience, Britain is one of the least racist countries in the world. That said, the bar is incredibly low and we still have a noticeable problem both institutionally and with individual attitudes.

The 'black people (or insert other minority here) can't be racist theory is exactly that. A theory. It's very far from being universally accepted despite the fact that people on here will trot it out as though it is.

It generally seems to be the reverse version of 'some of my best friends are black' which is used as a general excuse for saying something really racist.

And yes, you were right they were being racist. If they'd aimed it at the specific people making the posts they objected to it would have been fine. But not against the British in general.

So my grandparents who had no non-Jewish friends and stayed firmly within their community and referred to non-Jews as 'yoks' couldn't have been racist because they are from a minority? Sorry, I think racism can cut both ways. I'd say previous generations of my family while not openly hostile to non-Jews, were still racist and judgemental. Yes it was out of fear and bad experiences but even so,writing off an entire race as not OK, is still racist imo.
