AIBU to ask the woman next to me for her gherkin?

I'm in McDonalds and the woman next to me has removed the 2 pieces of gherkin from her burger and put them on the side.

God I want them. The best bit of a McDonalds. Maybe I can distract her then grab them.

I always pick them put, horrible little things! I always go through the drive thru so can't be bothered asking for a plain burger and having to park up and wait!

Speaking of special orders, my friend orders a cheeseburger.....without the burger....it's very embarrassing Grin

NoodleNinja · 30/05/2017 21:25

I love gherkins in McDs, I always ask for extra.

DP detests them and wont even entertain the idea of getting them on his and picking them off because they'd leave his burger all gherkiney. Prat.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 31/05/2017 00:08

Also I'm really curious why would they be in trouble for giving away gherkins?

It's considered theft. Any giving away of any food for free is theft and the crew member can get in a lot of trouble for it, maybe even fired. Anything extra has to be paid for, even if it's just an extra 20p.

You can't click to add extra on the self service screens because like I just said, absolutely anything extra has to be paid for and the screen can't just add the extra cost on. So if you want anything extra you need to order at the counter.

OP, try asking again for extra gherkins (though be aware they will charge maybe 20p for it); we get custom orders all day every day and very rarely get it wrong.

123beanie · 31/05/2017 00:10

It truly upsets me that some people don't appreciate how amazing gherkins are

SumThucker · 31/05/2017 00:15

Aaahh. I'm given DP's and DD's when we go

DixieFlatline · 31/05/2017 00:17

I used to work at a fast food place, and the colleagues that didn't give a shit and piled people's food items with extra whatever were a pain in the arse. The next time, the customer (and those that were around them) expect the extras for free, and if you stick to the rules, they think it's bad service, because they got what they wanted last time at no charge. Bad, bad strategy.

DixieFlatline · 31/05/2017 00:19

(I should maybe point out that for every person the wants 5 thing in their food item instead of the regulation 2, the tubs of thing disappear a whole lot faster over a week or a month or a year and cost the business more than expected, and throw the books off)

noblegiraffe · 31/05/2017 00:20

Do they discount by 20p if you say 'no gherkins'?

Could I say 'no onions but extra gherkins'? And come out even?

OP posts:
Freyanna · 31/05/2017 00:22

I'd give you my gherkins.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 31/05/2017 00:22

Nope, no discount.

Could I say 'no onions but extra gherkins'? And come out even?

But yes you could do that. It's like if people ask for a plain double with extra cheese, we don't charge for the extra cheese there because they want the rest of it plain.

BadToTheBone · 31/05/2017 00:24

Dh and ds hate them, dd and I love them, we're the perfect family!

icclemunchy · 31/05/2017 00:31

When I worked there (a good 14 years ago -gosh I'm old!) we were allowed to use our discretion. So if someone asked for a cheeseburger with an extra gherkin we could stick one in. If they wanted a load like the pregnant lady who'd come in for cupfuls we would charge

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 31/05/2017 00:34

icclemunchy I currently work there. Absolutely everything has to be charged for, whether it's one or twenty.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/05/2017 00:38

I'd let you touch my pickle OP

SparklyUnicornPoo · 31/05/2017 00:58

I'm one of the older ones of 8 kids, I convinced my siblings that McDonalds aren't allowed to sell burgers without the gherkins just so I could have theirs Grin

WellThatSucks · 31/05/2017 01:10

Bloody hate gherkins but, unfortunately for you OP, DH loves them so he gets mine. We once ate at the Carnegie Deli on an anniversary trip in NY, tons of meat in a huge roll but not a veggie in sight and after 3 days of mainly junky vacation food - pancakes for breakfast, pizza, hotdogs and the like - I was craving something fresh and green. No joy there not even a lettuce garnish only the plate of huge gherkins sliced lengthways in half they brought with our food.
I reached out to grab one jokingly declaring I'd die of scurvy if I didn't get some veggies or fruit in me and DH knowing I really really hate the things said "Yeah right. If you eat one of those I'll buy you that bag you liked in Saks."
Fool.
Damn right I ate the horrible thing and dragged him straight back to Saks afterwards!

Kerantli · 31/05/2017 01:22

Wait.. you can do that?! that's my orders sorted from here on out then Grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 31/05/2017 01:38

Course you can! Custom orders are very common; the tills are set up so it's just a click of a button to remove or add an ingredient.

You might have to wait two - three minutes (varies depending on what's already coming off grill and if there's a grill queue) as it needs to be made from scratch, but it's not a problem.

Chloe84 · 31/05/2017 03:48

Isn't the latest McD ad about a woman gazing lovingly at her DP for bringing her the gherkins from his burger? McD's must read MN.

Loving "GHERKIN SNATCH!!"

Natsku · 31/05/2017 06:04

Gherkin snatch - pure class!

We always have a jar of gherkins in the fridge as OH loves them, are you jealous? They sell about a hundred different types in the supermarket and you can buy individual whole ones, pulling them out of a bucket of brine.

makeourfuture · 31/05/2017 06:12

McDonald's is American. Therefore they are pickles.

QuestionableMouse · 31/05/2017 10:10

There's no way to give a discount through the till. My McDonald's doesn't change for extra pickles. I know we've given out free pots of them too because I've don't it.

Best thing to do is find someone and ask nicely.

Whitelisbon · 31/05/2017 10:20

I convinced all of my dc that they don't like gherkins, so they give them all to me. Except dd1, who worked out she likes then, and now there's a race to steal them from the younger dc.
So now I go to mcdonalds when dd1 is at school Grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 31/05/2017 10:49

It's supposed to; check your workbooks.

Just because you or other crew members do it doesn't make it okay. It's theft to give away any good whatsoever no matter how small. Fair enough if you have a lax business manager and want to risk it though.

And knowing it's classed as theft and the crew member could get into trouble, it would be really unfair to be cheeky enough to find someone on the side to ask.
