To eat a whole bag of crisps

So the title really.
I've got the day off work and I've eaten a full bag of those £1 grab bag sharing packets of crisps. (I've had no breakfast or lunch) I was just nibbling while reading.
My partner however thinks it's shocking I can eat a whole bag.
Would you be able to eat a whole bag? Aibu?

And we've already seen the result of the fucking 'sugar tax', more and more products are full of artificial sweetener shite.

PurpleDaisies · 30/05/2017 21:54

Why should they? People need to take personal responsibility for themselves. Larger bags = less packaging. That's a good thing. If you can't police yourself it's not the government's fault or responsibility.

Crisps don't stay very fresh once the bag's been opened. Eating a large bag over several sittings isn't particularly practical.

April241 · 30/05/2017 21:55

Easy. Crisps are my weakness!

Instasista · 30/05/2017 22:02

It's well known increasing portion size is a way to charge more, make more profit and get people more addicted to crap. It's been happening for 30 years.

'Crisps don't stay very fresh once the bag's been opened. Eating a large bag over several sittings isn't particularly practical.'

Get one of those clips. Or put them in a sealable container. Or hey, don't buy them! They've been sold in larger bags in other countries for decades, it's the only way to get them cheaply, buying them in those tiny bags is far more expensive, and they all manage to enjoy crisps pretty well.

It's a business, not a charity. People get addicted to 'crap' of all sorts of all different reasons, but ultimately, the only one who can break that cycle is the addicted one him/herself. It's no one else's responsibility.

Those clips or sealable containers don't work. I've already said I rarely but crisps, but I want the option to buy a single sensible serving pack to be available to me as it has been until recently. I don't care if buying them in a "tiny bag" is more expensive. It's annoying to (often) only be able to buy a big bag.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 30/05/2017 23:17

I could destroy a huge bag of wotsits right now.

expatinscotland · 30/05/2017 23:39

Well, most people care about value for money, Purple. I doubt there will never be small single bags available, it's just that now there's choice for those who want something else.

Instasista · 31/05/2017 07:55

Of course food companies make profit. Nobody thinks they're a charity.

However. Part of the reason the obesity epidemic is where we are is due to irresponsible food
Manufacturers who have not been legislated against or discouraged by our government who we elect to look after our wellbeing.

It's clear that portion size is related to obesity- look how we used to laugh at the American portions. It's not about choice, it's about the gradual increase of all portion sizes, both the standard ones as well as the ones you choose.

People blaming themselves, and their lack of willpower for them weight is why the diet industry is worth billions. Blaming the people is keeping these companies highly profitable.

expatinscotland · 31/05/2017 08:02

Some of us don't elect government to nanny us or see well-being as being policed like children. The diet industry is worth billions because, like the fashion industry, people subscribe to societal ideas of beauty. Shall the government nanny that, too, all that vanity sizing to increase their profits? We've already seen the result of such ridiculous nannying with the sugar tax, now we have more and more artificial sweeteners/chemical shitstorms in food.

Instasista · 31/05/2017 08:06

The diet industry is not comparable to vanity sizing and dieting is as much about health as beauty

And you don't elect a government to nanny you? Can you imagine what the corporate world would be doing to you if we didn't have legislation and standards? You have too much faith in them.

Northgate · 31/05/2017 10:49

I've noticed that there seem to be a lot more crisp flavours easily available in the sharing packet size than in the small 30 - 40g packet size.

And while I know we alll have individual responsibility when it comes to portion sizes etc etc, I also know that when it comes to things like a giant bag of crisps, I find it very hard to judge what a single portion looks like.
That's part of the reason I find it too easy to overeat crisps from sharing bags (the very moreish nature of crisps being the rest of the reason). I find it much easier to moderate my crisp intake when they come in a small single portion bag - no need to stop to wonder how many portions I've eaten and how many are left in the bag.

I'm sure I'm not alone in this. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the spread of sharing packets, and difficulties in accurately judging sensible portion sizes from sharing packets, is contributing to obesity.

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2017 11:46

The op wasn't even talking about a sharing bag I don't think. Just one of the bigger petrol station sized ones. If it's not lunch every day then there's nothing wrong with that. At all.

FuckingSausageFingers · 31/05/2017 11:56

Well I can happily polish off a tube of pringles, so a measly grab bag seems positively healthy to me.

FuckingSausageFingers · 31/05/2017 11:56

*disclaimer: it doesn't happen often!

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 31/05/2017 12:05

I have to physically restrained around wasabi peas - I would happily inhale a bucketful.😬

And Hula Hoops. And London mix.

Though I do eat about 5 satsumas, a banana, an apple and handful of grapes in a day and then wonder why I feel all 'fermenty'.

TomatoTomAto · 31/05/2017 13:34

This is my lunch.

No shame here.

To eat a whole bag of crisps
ALemonyPea · 31/05/2017 21:12

Ooooo Tomato, those are lovely aren't they?! I have some in the cupboard, small individual bags though. I couldn't be trusted with a big bag.

TomatoTomAto · 31/05/2017 21:42

I ate the lot too :-/

yesnomaybeoh · 01/06/2017 00:13

Just howled at some of the comments on this thread!!

Us women definitely take our crisps seriously.

They now need to make crisps pockets that silently open. So the kids and pets don't come running in at the sound of the crinkled packet

Sionella. Where do you find goats cheese crisps?

I couldn't eat a regular sized bag, but I often eat the small bags.

daisychain01 · 01/06/2017 18:27

You can get Walkers Sunny bites in little packets (cream cheese and chives, sweet chilli and original). And they are ahem healthy, sort of ha ha
