The Handmaid's Tale is coming on Channel 4 at 9.00 tonight?

OP posts:
WellErrr · 28/05/2017 21:01

I've seen it mentioned quite a bit - what's it about?

DorisMcSweeney · 28/05/2017 21:02

It's a rom-com set in America in the future.

Highalert · 28/05/2017 21:03

I read the book years ago. I don't really like TV adaptations of books. They are always disappointing.

Willowkins · 28/05/2017 21:08

Sorry but a rom-com? I saw the film and it's grim - women in a militaristic future are categorised as wives (the favoured few), prostitutes or potential babymakers (that's who the handmaid is - to begin with anyway). I've recorded and DH is out so I'll be watching it.

YouFightLikeADairyFarmer · 28/05/2017 21:09

It's a rom-com set in America in the future.

Er... it's definitely not a rom com.

It's about a world where women have no rights, basically. I loved the book and am really looking forward to watching it! Fingers crossed they don't ruin it, reviews are all good.

Harvey246 · 28/05/2017 21:12

Rom-com Grin

Moanyoldcow · 28/05/2017 21:12

Rom-com??! Fuck me - I must've read a different book!!

Schlobbob · 28/05/2017 21:13

I studied the book for A Level and really enjoyed it and read good reviews of the series. Really looking forward to it!

Tenementfunster · 28/05/2017 21:13

Second time you made me laugh today, Doris Grin

elQuintoConyo · 28/05/2017 21:14

Jean Rhys wrote the follow up: Handmaid's Knee.

SmilingButClueless · 28/05/2017 21:16

Ah, that explains my English Lit grade. I thought it was a dystopian vision of a post-feminist future. I'd completely missed the romantic comedy elements.

Theresnonamesleft · 28/05/2017 21:16

Haha rom-com. Although tbh not surprised considering the amount of people think that 50 shades of shite is romantic.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 28/05/2017 21:19

I read quite a bit of the book and enjoyed it but never finished it so don't know how it ends!

I'm still gonna watch the tv show, though.

maras2 · 28/05/2017 21:21

Wonder if offred knows.

DorisMcSweeney · 28/05/2017 21:23

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 the ending is standard Hollywood stuff; the main protagonist, Shirley, realises she is in love with the farm hand, Buster, and they run away together to live happily ever after.

lorelairoryemily · 28/05/2017 21:27

It's neither romantic nor comedic...Grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 28/05/2017 21:28

DorisMcSweeney I think you're very confused and on the wrong thread.

JamesDelaneysHat · 28/05/2017 21:30

elQuinto Grin

slothqueen · 28/05/2017 21:31

Grin rom-com. I just spat out my brew.

TinselTwins · 28/05/2017 21:33

I've had it highly recommended but I'm not sure?
I don't stomach shows with sexual violence in them - is it grim/gratuitous?

aliasjoey · 28/05/2017 21:33

It's pretty obvious doris was being ironic...!

Crunchymum · 28/05/2017 21:34

Its one of my favourite books.

HumphreyCobblers · 28/05/2017 21:35

It is really good so far. I love that book.

porridgetits · 28/05/2017 21:36
  1. hurrah.
  2. YouFightLikeADairyFarmer; love your name. I am rubber; you are glue.
Seeeeriously · 28/05/2017 21:36

Atwood herself has said this version is brilliant. I'm 15 minutes in and - as ever - I wholeheartedly agree with her.
