aliasjoey Quite clearly it isn't obvious else I would have realised.

icelolly99 · 28/05/2017 23:38

Never heard of the novel or author I'm ashamed to say. I've just reserved a copy of the book from my library......there's quite a wait though! Did jump in and out of the first episode on TV tonight to see how disturbing it is.....not sure I can watch it but definitely want to read the book.

Tazerface · 28/05/2017 23:44

icelolly - on the one hand I'm shocked you haven't heard of Margaret Atwood let alone her books and on the other hand I'm jealous you've got them all to come! She's my favourite author.

I thought this episode was great, true to the book, bleak as fuck. I love the book.

Brogadoccio · 28/05/2017 23:46

is it on popcorn yet? i deleted popcorn a while ago I'll re download it if it's on popcorn

Sexstarvedredhead · 28/05/2017 23:56

I was a bit disappointed. Though visually it was beautiful. Cutting out the female execution prior to the particicution feels wrong to me as they're skating over the rigid definition of roles and the hatred between each and all "categories". The econowives were missed out too, missing out the materialistic traits that persist in the dystopia.
I will watch it all. But inevitably screen adaptions can only do so much.

icelolly99 · 29/05/2017 00:01

Tazerface I'm surprised too; I am a book reader and went to a grammar school (back in the late 80's) so I don't know how I've missed 'this' ! I don't mind bleak books but I often know I wouldn't watch any corresponding film/TV. For example I've recently read The Kite Runner which I thought was excellent but I won't watch the film!

Willowkins · 29/05/2017 00:18

Just watched it and loved it. Read the book ages ago but this really brings it to life.

Whiterabbitears · 29/05/2017 00:19

I read this at A level and didn't really appreciate it then. I really enjoyed tonights showing and will watch the others. Its sinister because in the novel it shows how the changes from the regime came about without the public really knowing until its too late, which is relevant to certain things today.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 29/05/2017 00:24

Dammit! I didn't watch or tape because I'm old enough to have seen the film. (and I've read the book too) (and stealth boast- I've met MA, and asked her a killer question at a literary festival)

Anyone as old as me who has seen the film think the TV adaptation worth watching????

redshoeblueshoe · 29/05/2017 00:28

I'm still laughing at smilingnutclueless Grin
I'm going to watch it tomorrow

redshoeblueshoe · 29/05/2017 00:30

sorry smiling I've just realised I misspelt your name probably as I was too busy laughing

SomeOtherFuckers · 29/05/2017 00:39

Ooh! This was the first novel my teacher ever lent me!
Can't wait to catch up soon

SomeOtherFuckers · 29/05/2017 00:39

lol I think rom-commer was making a joke lol

SomethingOnce · 29/05/2017 00:42

I had to hide Oryx and Crake from view when I'd finished it Blush

SomethingOnce · 29/05/2017 00:44

I remember being very disappointed with the film, Drinks, but very much enjoyed this evening's episode of the TV adaptation.

nocoolnamesleft · 29/05/2017 00:57

Agree that this so far seems rather better done than the film.

PovertyPain · 29/05/2017 01:00

Ah! The penny has dropped, something. I couldn't understand why everyone was so excited as, I thought, it has been on before.🤔 It was the film I watched. 😊😁 Now I'm kicking myself I didn't watch the first episode.☹️

coldcanary · 29/05/2017 01:06

Broggadicio don't know about popcorn (it crashed for me) but if you can get Exodus it's up to episode 6 on there.

Trifleorbust · 29/05/2017 06:41

I am sooo looking forward to it.

The Blind Assassin is also excellent (book).

Trifleorbust · 29/05/2017 06:41

Rom-com! Grin

icanteven · 29/05/2017 07:20

It's honestly some of the best television I have ever watched. We're up to episode 6 (watching online) and I'm BESIDE myself to watch the next episode - it's just wonderful, as is Elizabeth Moss. DH is watching it with me too, and he usually hates television but loves this. We do joke about the incessant moody cello/buzzing noises though - it makes even the fairly (relatively) innocuous scenes stressful to watch. Grin

daisychain01 · 29/05/2017 07:21

The Guardian says the title has become a shorthand for repressive regimes against women. Rom-com it is not!

I didn't see it but I understand MA made a cameo appearance. I wonder if they'll bring the series out on DVD, if so I'll get it as we don't have a TV but can view DVDs

SomethingOnce · 29/05/2017 10:23

For those who blinked and missed MA's cameo.

To let all of you know that...
allegretto · 29/05/2017 11:07

Come on! The Rom-com comment was obviously a joke!
