The Handmaid's Tale is coming on Channel 4 at 9.00 tonight?

QuartzUcan · 28/05/2017 21:39

It is very good. I was 6 episodes in when I couldn't get it any more until it came over to UK.

Seeeeriously · 28/05/2017 21:40

I've just finished reading The Power. Timed it right to end just before the Handmaid's Tale started tonight.

Libitina · 28/05/2017 21:41

Watching it now, bit of a slow burner but starting to understand whats going on. I think....

CoolCarrie · 28/05/2017 21:41

Alias Grace is also being adapted for television, should be on near the end of this year.

I'm watching it, it is good, but it's hard to watch at parts, the acting is brilliant though.

Reow · 28/05/2017 21:44

Doris lol

TinselTwins · 28/05/2017 21:44

anyone who's seen it, is it "difficult"/disturbing viewing?

I've just seen this thread and have set it to record on +1. Than you op! I'd have been a bit gutted if I'd missed it!

allegretto · 28/05/2017 21:51

Doris - love it!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/05/2017 21:52

I'm recording it, I'm not in the mood for it tonight.

Read it at school many moons ago and have never forgotten the feeling of sheer outraged injustice. Attwood wrote it so well.

isupposeitsverynice · 28/05/2017 21:52

Honestly I found it difficult to watch because I'm a big wuss with telly but it really is so good I think it's worth enduring the tough bits, and I haven't had nightmares about it yet...

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge · 28/05/2017 21:54

I read the book earlier this year and have watched the first 5 episodes, but slow to start but it picks up.

CoolCarrie · 28/05/2017 21:54

The fertile women are used as brood mares for the infertile women, the world has become pollutioned which has lowered the birth rate the Christian fundamentalists have taking over the US, the Marthas are maids of all work, like Martha and Mary in the bible, Offred is the brood mare for Fred, so Off Fred, any way that's just a very quick heads up to anyone who hasn't read it!

MusicToMyEars800 · 28/05/2017 21:56

I am going to read the book.

CoolCarrie · 28/05/2017 21:59

Tinsel it is both, but what is most disturbing is how this could come true, and in some places it is so very close to how some women live now!

All Margaret Attwoods books are wonderful !

OP posts:
MusicToMyEars800 · 28/05/2017 22:03

wow some of the scenes in this.... Cool Which other Margaret Attwood books would you recommend? I am looking for some good books to read, the sort of ones you start reading and can't put down.

buckeejit · 28/05/2017 22:06

I wAtched it all so far from US-it's actually a fantastic adaptation-verbs off from the book 4 episodes in. Margaret Atwood is in the first episode. Love it a lot.

Seeeeriously · 28/05/2017 22:09

Atwood calls it speculative fiction. She says nothing in the novel hasn't actually happened at some point.

It's an incredible novel.

deadringer · 28/05/2017 22:11

Blast I forgot to tape this. Anyone know if it will be repeated anywhere else?

Peanutbutterfingers · 28/05/2017 22:11

Margaret Atwood my favourite author ever, ever.

I hope Alias Grace is as good as Handmaid's Tale is looking.

I'm very much wishing for an excellent Oryx and Crake series, ties with Handmaid's Tale for my favourite book of all time, plus, it's a trilogy!

I also love The Robber Bride, Cats Eye and the Blind Assassin.

You really can't go wrong, she's an utterly utterly brilliant writer

MusicToMyEars800 · 28/05/2017 22:22

deadringer I should think it will be on 4od.

deadringer · 28/05/2017 22:28

Oooh its OK my clever dh recorded it!Smile

CoolCarrie · 28/05/2017 22:28

deadringer it might be worth a look at YouTube, or check channel 4 tv pages for repeat, they sometimes do repeat very late on at night
