to get annoyed with people who judge beach holidays?

I get really annoyed with the type of people who say 'Oh I could never lie on the beach for two weeks, you must be so bored!' and act like the only valid use of my precious two weeks off a year is trekking barefoot through the Andes teaching orphans English.

I get especially annoyed because 95% of them seem to earn lots of money for jobs with very little stress.

I get annoyed by those who assume that when people go to Spain on holiday the only things they do are lie on the beach or by the pool and get pissed and that a holiday in Morocco or Thailand for example is somehow more worthy.

Plenty of people who go to Morocco or Thailand will be laying by the pool getting pissed and plenty of people going to Spain will be touring monuments, trekking in the mountains, visiting museums etc.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 28/05/2017 21:56

Why do people give a toss about others' choice of holiday? I would rather stick pins in my eyes than go anywhere but I don't judge those who do

danadas · 28/05/2017 21:56

I hate holidays full stop and have never spent more than 4 days away from home.

I have a stressful job and an active life but my idea of relaxing is being at home and days out with the family.

People can't get their head around this but each to their own.

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2017 21:58

I am not sure about Orlando. It sounds exhausting on paper.

I have been to Disneyland CA and I have no intention of going back. I am still all Mickeyed out and I went in 1992. Grin

KERALA1 · 28/05/2017 21:58

God I worked with a woman who had an incredibly demanding job (corporate lawyer long long hours). Every holiday was spent in an action packed manner from dawn to dusk - diving, sailing, Skiing. To me exhausting. I had the same job and one action packed holiday and ended up physically ill. I need to recharge.

My perfect holiday is two thirds reading and swimming in the sun one third exploring beautiful places. Thankfully Dh is the same and for the last 3 years dds too as now also avid readers - bliss.

Alfieisnoisy · 28/05/2017 21:58

Hubby hates beach holidays. Unfortunate,y he married me though and I bloody love them. It's not a holiday unless I can see the sea.

And I adore UK beaches....even if it's not hot you can beachcomb.

BoomBoomsCousin · 28/05/2017 21:58

I don't care what type of holiday you like or what you think of my holiday, but I do want to know what jobs these people do that earn loads of money with no stress? I could do with one of those and then I'd care even less what type of holiday you go on or what you think of mine!

I don't think saying that you personally wouldn't like a particular type of holiday is rude, but indicating that someone's holiday choice is in some way an indicator that they are lazy/uneducated/uptight/too full of themselves/etc. is pretty nasty.

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2017 21:59

Livia I am the same about holidays really. Would be quite happy to stay at home, plus I miss the cat.

I go because we have DC and they want a holiday.

3DStanley · 28/05/2017 22:00

DH doesn't do terribly well on flights so America is probably out for us now. Everyone I know who has gone to Orlando has loved it though.

I have no children so I do stay at home with the cats Grin

MrsJayy · 28/05/2017 22:00

I liked orlando dds loved it dh hated it with a passion he muttered for a fortnight

BarbaraofSeville · 28/05/2017 22:01

Doing that can make a great holiday danadas. you just need to get into the right mindset that you are on holiday so won't be deep cleaning or decluttering as some will get the urge to do, and most people probably have all sorts of attractions on their doorstep that they've never visited.

3DStanley · 28/05/2017 22:02

my idea of relaxing is being at home and days out with the family.

Oh no, I understand that. I love the Sunday night of a holiday, thinking you don't need to get up the next day.

My idea of holiday hell would be a week's walking holiday in the Lake District (not in itself a bad thing), but with DH, SIL, BIL and other assorted relatives who all think the only way to get to the shop / pub / restaurant / town 8 miles away is by yomping forth in the drizzle and talking about how marvellous it all is. No it isn't. I'm cold, wet, bored, hungry, tired, and pissed off. And I've got blisters.

Give me a beach any day.

Libitina · 28/05/2017 22:02

I have an extremely stressful and exhausting job, but a beach holiday would still be my idea of hell.
Different strokes for different folks and all that.

StarCrossdSkys · 28/05/2017 22:03

Different holidays for different times of life. I'm not going to drag toddlers around heaving tourist sites if I can avoid it. I've seen enough duomos for a lifetime by now anyway. If I was mega interested then maybe I'd consider it to be worthwhile, but I can't imagine what would make me so interested to see an old thing that I'd choose to spend hundreds of pounds and precious annual leave putting myself through that stress.

AI is easy and an actual rest from the constant cooking and cleaning up at home.

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2017 22:03

I do struggle with long haul flights. I am not one of these who thinks the holiday starts the minute you leave the house. I sit there waiting for it to plummet to the ground mainly.

I never manage to sleep on a flight either. Sad

I will bring the cat round to yours and stay with you for a week Livia.

Monkeyface26 · 28/05/2017 22:03

YANBU for not wanting people's negative view of your holiday.

YABU for saying 95% of them seem to earn a lots of money for jobs with very little stress

That seems considerably more rude & dismissive than them offering their unsolicited views about how they prefer to relax. It is also not how the world works. People who earn a lot of money work hard for it.

MaisyPops · 28/05/2017 22:03

Surely the obvious thing is that people have different tastes in holidays, differences of taste will come up in conversation. Not all difference of opinions over holiday heaven vs hell is some kind of personal criticism of an individual.

If it holidays came up as small talk at a work networking event then whatever holiday they said, I would probably say 'lovely' and enquire. If it's among friends then I like to think me and my friends are friends enough we can be honest about our preferences without anyone going home crying victim because somebody didn't personally adore their holiday choice.

sparkling Orlando sounds exhausting to me too. I'll happily do outdoors stuff that's physically demanding but ask me to deal with crowds of people and I just would hate it.
That said I have friends who are childfree by choice and they go every year or every other year. They absolutely love doing the park rounds and think me and DH are the crazy ones.

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2017 22:06

YY Orlando is a long way to go and a lot of ££s to find out whether it's your sort of place or not.

blue25 · 28/05/2017 22:06

We go on holidays to places with beaches, but we still explore the area, visiting historical sites & walking. Not everyone just loafs on the beach all week!

DopeyDazy · 28/05/2017 22:06

Love beach holidays but saf about the lack of facilities. Just bought a Hyundai camper so we have a toilet and shower after sea and can cook a basic meal

I get sick lying in the sun; come out in a rash and feel nauseous. So not particularly relaxing and yes, my idea of hell. It's not snobbishness, it's taste.

My lovely SIL and her DH went to a similar part of the world to us at the same time recently. Theirs was a fabulously all inclusive, white sand, uniformed servants type of affair. She's a nurse, works hard and likes to lie around. All power to her arm. We went to the 'Third World' equivalent of their holiday. Local people and places, carrying our own bags Grin cheap beer and $0.75 cabs everywhere (which frequently had the cab driver's kids/cousin/mate in as well because they were going the same way.

BIL couldn't really fathom why we enjoyed it. He likes being waited on and treated like he's all that. It makes my skin crawl. So if anyone is snobby...

talkingtoclarry · 28/05/2017 22:14

I like both. City breaks are knackering as we race around seeing all the sights and soaking up the culture. My beach holidays are all about lying in sunloungers, swimming and relaxing. Pre DS we usually fitted in a couple of city breaks a year plus a beach hol. Was the perfect mix for me.
