to get annoyed with people who judge beach holidays?

I get really annoyed with the type of people who say 'Oh I could never lie on the beach for two weeks, you must be so bored!' and act like the only valid use of my precious two weeks off a year is trekking barefoot through the Andes teaching orphans English.

I get especially annoyed because 95% of them seem to earn lots of money for jobs with very little stress.

AIBU?

As long as there is something to do
at night, I don't mind. Unfortunately, that rules out a lot of dots for me but I keep thinking I can do them when I'm older. I couldn't spend all week on the same beach, but certainly appreciate a good view and book. I'd love a job where all I want to do in each one of my holidays is expend extra energy. Personally, I need a rest and good food occasionally.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 28/05/2017 21:17

I guess when I've said it it's been in response to someone being really pushy that I should go wherever they've been because I would love it... school gate type conversations with people you don't know very well.

lovelyleftrubbishright · 28/05/2017 21:18

My mum's like this and she always comes back from her holidays stressed. I like to come back from my holidays more relaxed, browner and fatter. Though I do have quite an active job/lifestyle.

SuperBeagle · 28/05/2017 21:19

YABU.

A beach holiday would be my own personal hell.

But whatev. Not my circus, not my monkeys.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 28/05/2017 21:21

My ideal holiday is somewhere the DCs are less demanding than when we are at home. The rest of it is just scenery

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2017 21:21

People are just rude then. Don't tell them where you are going, you don't have to if you think they are going to be judgey.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 28/05/2017 21:22

I don't see how you can get any YABUs here, unless those saying YABU are actually saying you should put up with people pissing on your parade because it's not their idea of fun either Confused

You didn't ask if beach holidays were good, you asked if you were being unreasonable to expect people not to slag them off!

MaisyPops · 28/05/2017 21:22

I hate beach holidays because I get bored easily and can't think of anything worse than sitting around by a pool/on the beach for a week.

I'm also one of those 'travellers' that probably do your head in. I like adventure holidays like cycling, walking, wild camping, mountain climbing etc.

The difference is that just because your idea of holiday heaven is my idea of holiday hell, I wouldn't dream of thinking my holiday is somehow superior. And if we were talking face to face I'd never tell you your holiday sounds like hell... unless we were good friends in which case it would be all good humoured and you would do what my friends do which is tell me my holiday is shite too, we'd mock each others holidays and it would be all good fun.Grin

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 28/05/2017 21:22

I wouldn't enjoy a beach holiday but that's because I don't do heat. I wouldn't be bored, I'd spend all day in the sea/pool trying desperately to cool down and not look like a freshly boiled lobster, but it wouldn't be my idea of a relaxing holiday.

I love city breaks or places with cool architecture/interesting cultural traditions and different languages etc. For other people, that's as dull as dull can be. Everyone's different :)

LockedOutOfMN · 28/05/2017 21:23

OP, those beach snobs had better not come to Spain. The entire country decamps to the beach for a month (if they can) every August! And there's so much more to do than lie on the sand.

C0untDucku1a · 28/05/2017 21:24

I dont care where you go on holiday. But i dont need to see a filtered photo of your feet.

3DStanley · 28/05/2017 21:25

You didn't ask if beach holidays were good, you asked if you were being unreasonable to expect people not to slag them off!

I feel that my point has been proved Wink

3DStanley · 28/05/2017 21:25

Oh no, my feet are yucky. I only take photos for my Mum.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2017 21:26

I do try and avoid people's holiday photos. You had to be there mostly.

SuperBeagle · 28/05/2017 21:26

I don't understand your point about them having stress-free jobs? What's that got to do with the price of tea in China?

3DStanley · 28/05/2017 21:28

I am convinced there is a correlation between being people who are stressed out of their box, skint and only having two weeks of precious holiday time and people who see the true joy of a beach holiday.

It seems that all the people who 'travel' have loads of holidays, money and fairly stress free lives.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2017 21:29

Is it because it's thought that if you don't have a very stressful job you don't need to lie in the sunshine for 2 weeks doing nothing? Confused

MaisyPops · 28/05/2017 21:29

3D
Why has your point been proved?

What I've seen are people saying "actually, I don't like them personally for these reasons but I couldn't care less about what somebody else enjoys".

It actually matters whether the people replying like/don't like them because if you had 20 people all saying "yes it's wrong to slag them off" but they are all huge beach holiday fans that's a very different response to 'I don't like them but wouldn't bring it up in conversation if somebody was looking forward to theirs'.

It make some wonder whether you're actually just looking for lots of "it's awful to not like them because they are awesome" replies.

Incidently, I like the beach. But tend to do it as part of a travel plan because I want a change of scenery after 2-3 days.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 28/05/2017 21:29

Having missed the point of the thread earlier then, YANBU- unless you spend 20 minutes trying to convince me that I would like a holiday just like yours, in which case I ANBU to say I would hate it Smile

scottishdiem · 28/05/2017 21:30

Its not unreasonable for someone to give their thoughts on a holiday. I see no value in trekking in the middle of nowhere but people seem to like it. I see no value in lying on a beach trying very hard to catch skin cancer but different people seem to enjoy that. I see no value in beach resort nightlife but people like getting pished and falling off walls and breaking bones or killing themselves riding mopeds with no training but each to their own.

I like city breaks but people dont like the hassle and the noise and the small rooms and the dodgy service in places but it doesnt bother me. We are all different so why worry if someone doesnt like what you like OP?

The issue would be if a moral or ethical judgement was placed upon your holiday but people can have opinions about what they like and dont like.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 28/05/2017 21:30

I've avoided beach holidays for years (memories of being boiled alive in July in the Algarve as a kid) but DH has given me a free pass for a week, and I'm considering that very thing for a week in October. A week to just lie and read, and it won't be too hot, and no-one to suit but myself...sounds just what I need! Might top it off with a day or two in Lisbon for an ogle at the culture - that feeds my soul, but I really could do with a break and not doing anything!

Bunbunbunny · 28/05/2017 21:30

Yanbu - I could never understand how my mother just wanted to chill by the pool whilst younger, but with full time work& constant pressure it's bliss & what I dream of!

There is a bit of snobbery towards beach holidays, I think half the posters here have jumped on the bandwagon!

MrsPeelyWaly · 28/05/2017 21:31

I get especially annoyed because 95% of them seem to earn lots of money for jobs with very little stress

That just goes to show how little you understand.

Oh, and I love a beach holiday.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/05/2017 21:32

I love a beach holiday.

Shlepping though cities pretending to enjoy the crowds is my idea of hell.

SuperBeagle · 28/05/2017 21:33

Well your conviction about the "correlation" is wrong, because there isn't on.
