How are you planning to vote if you earn over £80,000

Just wondering the above really.
I can't stand the conservatives and always assumed I would vote Labour in this election, however with the tax increase over £80k I feel I'd be shooting myself in the foot a bit.
What do others think?

Sorry rocco

I missed your post

I agree that some money is saved but i think that private medical cover has negatives which could damage the nhs

A little bit of a compromise would be private wings or floors of nhs hospitals

I still use it though...the nhs can take ages but I appreciate that i am contributing to the issue of queue jumping

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 28/05/2017 23:06

Oh i meant to say that not as much money as people think

Moanyoldcow · 28/05/2017 23:10

The argument about VAT on independent school fees is specious.

If your school is good, we'll subscribed to with good outcomes they will be 'doing well' and be prepared and planning for these changes. You will find they will absorb the majority of the costs being able to reclaim the VAT they can't currently and, as they will be subject to VAT, many will undertake commercial lettings and other ventures they do not currently owing to the tax complications.

If your school is not doing well then engaged middle class parents will be beneficial in the local state sector as it's well known they drive up standards.

I actually work in an independent school as a FM - we've been preparing for this for years and any school that isn't has a negligent governing body in my opinion.

Moanyoldcow · 28/05/2017 23:12

I agree Rufus - if all the wealthy people couldn't buy their way out of the NHS then you could be assured it'd be a hell of a lot better.

TopsOff · 28/05/2017 23:12

Labour. The conservative manifesto and their record on hammering the disabled makes me feel so sad for this country. I don't love Corbyn, in fact I'll admit that I liked the Blair government best. But voting labour now is the best of two bad choices for me.

Moanyoldcow · 28/05/2017 23:12

*well subscribed to

Fucking autocorrect

hellomarshmallow · 28/05/2017 23:16

Surely intelligent people don't vote purely based on their own individual needs (or wants... no one needs an income of £80,000).

I really hope people look at the bigger picture and realise that they need nurses, teachers and cleaners. That these people's kids need a decent chance too.

hellomarshmallow · 28/05/2017 23:17

(And then vote labour or lib dem, but definitely not tory)

Moanyoldcow · 28/05/2017 23:19

I bloody hope not Marshmallow.

Every change my DH and I end up better off and we don't need it and we are by no means mega high earners. I will happily sacrifice some of my excess - there are some people really up against it and it's heartbreaking.

ADishBestEatenCold · 28/05/2017 23:30

SNP

Want2bSupermum · 28/05/2017 23:33

I'm still not sure who to vote for. My local MP is Labour and does a good job. However the leadership of Labour is horrendous.

My grandmother told me about Labour in the 70s and I think that is where JC wants to take us. If anyone thinks the tax increase is going to be small think again. I expect the tax rate will go up to a much higher percentage than what they have said. I also don't think £80k is a high salary. Not when you are paying for childcare and public transportation on post tax income.

We have some fundamental issues with our society and I respect TM for acknowledging that people voted for Brexit. Labour are not addressing Brexit or any of the other fundamental issues in our society starting with education which IMO is key to closing the inequality gap. TM isnt strong on that front either.

Truthfully it's really sad that I don't like either party or what they stand for. I think there are an awful lot of people in my shoes which is why this election is going to be a lot closer than TM thought.

MajesticWhine · 28/05/2017 23:37

DH earns well over 80k. However I don't, and am an NHS worker so would would quite like a pay rise, which seems likely under labour. We also have DC who will likely be going to uni over the next few years. So there are various issues to consider. But we are likely to vote based on general principles rather than personal benefit. For me that's lib dem.

Rhayader · 28/05/2017 23:39

Conservative. To all those saying it wouldn't cost us much more, uhh actually it would and only DH earns over 80K. It would cost us almost 3 months rent more in tax each year (with income tax increase and health insurance tax - DC go to state school so we wouldn't be impacted by the private school tax).

JustAnotherPoster00 · 28/05/2017 23:57

My grandmother told me about Labour in the 70s and I think that is where JC wants to take us.

Could you link to some articles that proves or supports this I would be genuinely interested

Whatthefoxgoingon · 28/05/2017 23:59

I've settled on lib dem. DH on Green Party.

bananafish81 · 29/05/2017 00:05

Lib dems, because their policies most closely align with my views

However I live in a safe Labour seat (people's Republic of Islington - Emily Thornberry) so I can vote with my conscience with little chance of it affecting the result in my constituency

If I lived in a marginal then I'd vote tactically against the Tories

harrietm87 · 29/05/2017 00:08

Labour.

I earn over £80k therefore I can afford
to pay more tax and it is a privilege to
do so to help make society better for everyone. I grew up on benefits and will never forget what poverty is like. There but for the grace of god go I.

Want2bSupermum · 29/05/2017 00:12

This is something from the FT

It's the land tax idea that has me at a cross roads. We have that here in the US and it's a disaster. We pay $15k a year in property tax for our home. For a family home in a family friendly town average taxes are $20-25k. A mansion type home is $45-90k a year.

The result is that a lot of homes are in very poor condition as owners can't afford the maintenance and property taxes. It's a shame.

Want2bSupermum · 29/05/2017 00:15

Land tax ends up being a huge barrier for the poor. Homes with high property taxes tend not be rented as the rent is very high. You end up with far less diversity overall and retirees sell up and move out of state to live in low property tax states.

blackteasplease · 29/05/2017 00:17

Labour

Gaggleofgirls · 29/05/2017 00:19

@Rufus have you used private healthcare? Having used both I can assure you the experience is a much better one. That said I believe the NHS needs better funding/budgeting so that it would also be able to deliver this standard of care.

I have struggled to find anywhere in the conservative manifesto that they intend to get rid of the NHS? Can someone please answer where they are getting this information from that's up to date?

In terms of taxation I don't believe it should be raised. Neither myself nor my husband are quite at the threshold of 80k, however I believe taxation should be truly proportional. E.g. At 30% someone with £100 would pay £30 but someone earning £100k would be taxed £30k.

LittleKiwi · 29/05/2017 00:27

Labour. What is best for the country is best for me, as Doje said upthread.

ginghambox · 29/05/2017 00:29

Conservative.

blueshoes · 29/05/2017 00:49

Conservative.

This turkey won't be voting X'mas.

Sionella · 29/05/2017 06:51

It's fiscally irresponsible to even think about voting labour. Why on earth would anyone be so naive as to think the first tax rise would be the only one?? Jezza and his mates see it as a golden money tree. Lib dem or Tory are the only possible choices.

They both suck, but at least they won't suck the country dry and leave office in 5 years' time with a fucked economy, half nationalised borked services, and dwindling investment/high earners who got totally sick of being squeezed.
