Fantastic thread... another 80s teen here. Grin

Funboy Three, Hazell Dean, Laura Branigan, Marie Wilson, OMD, Strawberry Switchblade and many, many more...

minionsrule · 28/05/2017 16:03

I downloaded a few ultravox songs yesterday prompted by this thread.... fotgot how much i loved Love's Great Adventure, The Voice and One Small Day. Also loved Level 42, especially Lessons in Love. Happy days Wink

maddiemookins16mum · 28/05/2017 16:05

I was born in 64. 80's in my era. I know most of the words to most of the songs. Happy Days.

JGK0 · 28/05/2017 16:48

Born in 62 so was really into music in the 70's (at school) 7 early 80's (at university)

Had a pretty eclectic music tastes (ABBA to the Toy Dolls). At Uni in the 80's saw:

OMD
the Jam
Squeeze
Classics Nouveaux
Hazel O'Connor
Judi Tzuke
Hannoi rocks
Splodgenessabounds

and also

Slade
Roy Wood
Gary Glitter

Uni although very white, middle class had a huge reggae following so got in Bob Marley. Got to see Aswad & general saint & Clint Eastwood.

BestIsWest · 28/05/2017 18:31

I failed to get tickets for The Jam and never saw them live. I was gutted. Still one of my top bands.

BestIsWest · 28/05/2017 18:31

Though I have seen Roy Wood live 3 times - he was great.

Whileweareonthesubject · 28/05/2017 21:25

Not sure age is completely relevant. I was born early 60's to parents who loved music do I grew up on 50's and 60's stuff. By the 70's, I was into music and clearly remember the first single record I ever bought - I just can't help believing by Elvis. I used money given to me for my 10th birthday. I love 80's music too and it was really only towards the end of the 90's that I began to find I was listening to 'oldies'radio stations, rather than those playing contemporary stuff. DC 1 has a very eclectic musical taste, anything and everything is on his iPod, from just about every era and style, including classical as well as more mainstream stuff. DC 2 is very much a child of the 90's and loves lots of contemporary stuff, but does enjoy some of 'mum's choice'now and again. Ally vinyl is packed away in theory. Seriously thinking about one of those USB turntables now.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/05/2017 22:43

There is a song by Hazel o Connor that still to this day makes my hairs stand on end. I think it is from a film called Breaking Glass? 1980/81?..

"You drink your coffee, I'll drink my tea......"

DramaAlpaca · 28/05/2017 22:50

maddie same here about that Hazel O'Connor song - it's called Will You? I was born the same year as you, and am also pretty much word perfect on most of these songs. It was a wonderful era for music.

honeyroar · 28/05/2017 23:21

I adore Will You too, it's the drum crescendo leading to the saxophone bit. It was indeed from Breaking Glass, a film that we rented on video because all the copies of Grease were already gone and the shop assistant said it was another pop/musical film. It was a little bit heavier than Grease and not really suitable for 11yr olds!!

SynysterGates · 28/05/2017 23:26
omg I forgot her....how she was brilliant

StrangeLookingParasite · 29/05/2017 05:21

especially Party Fears Two which is just beautiful. Still sad about Billy Mackenzie.

I think the whole Sulk album is pretty amazing.

For me it was Joy Division, then New Order, The The, Killing Joke, Sisters of Mercy, struggles to remember.
Absolutely not mainstream stuff. Pete Shelley's Homosapien single, loved it. Some Bauhaus, Peter Murphy's solo album Deep, with 'Cuts you up' on it.
I actually wore out two vinyl copies of Night Time (KJ).

BattleaxeGalactica · 29/05/2017 17:56

I'm old enough to have seen 'Breaking Glass' at the cinema when it was released Grin

The CD is still available on Amazon (as is the DVD albeit at an eye watering price Shock). Hazel O'connor has always been hugely underrated IMO.

DramaAlpaca · 29/05/2017 18:25

Oh, I love that Slik song I'm old too. Midge Ure looks so young - I suppose that's because he was!

bruffin · 29/05/2017 21:58

I adored Slik. I had posters on my wall of them.

Destinysdaughter · 30/05/2017 13:33

LoveMySituation Japan were amazing live, Moody and majestic, everything you wanted them to be! David Sylvian was sooo beautiful < sigh >

waitforitfdear · 30/05/2017 13:38

goose1964 · 30/05/2017 13:58

I was a teenager in the 80s so I love this programme repeat, when I was at college we went around the BBC and watched TOTP rehearsal

LoveMySituation · 30/05/2017 17:22

Amazing destiny, was it their last tour you saw? Think David was happier on that one, glad it was soon to be overGrin

BG2015 · 30/05/2017 17:31

Love the 80's, I was born in 1969 and left school in 1987!

I saw Depeche Mode, Wham, King, Level 42, Erasure, Tears for Fears in concert- all songs I have on my iPod to this day.

Fave music!

VintagePerfumista · 30/05/2017 17:35

That Will You song is fabulous. You can hear her soooooo wanting him to stay.

I downloaded The Eighth Day (is it?) the other day. Brilliantly bonkers. Glorious.

If I had to pick one song that epitomises the 80s in all its glory it would probably be The Whole Of The Moon- best "pop" song ever. And on my November 1985 compilation tape. Grin Just a rollicking happy vibe with it.

EastMidsGPs · 30/05/2017 17:41

I raise you TOTPS and give you The Tube
Ran from 83 to 87 I think ... live from Newcastle with Hooks Holland, Paula Yates and Muriel Gary.

Had to watch it, we were transfixed ... will never forget Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax .. shocked! I couldn't eat my tea Smile
