80's music is just the best. Every track a memory, even Rick Astley and Bros Grin

Have we paid homage to Steve Strange and Visage yet? Fade To Grey is one of my all time faves. The Bowie of that era is pretty good too especially Ashes To Ashes.

BestIsWest · 27/05/2017 18:59

1978 was my year, I haven't bought a single since 1981.

Blonde, The Stranglers, The Jam, The Police, Elvis Costello etc

BestIsWest · 27/05/2017 19:01

Fade to Grey was a great song. I secretly loved the New Romantic stuff especially the Bowie stuff but felt it was just a bit uncool.

DoctorTwo · 27/05/2017 19:03

I remember John Peel playing a song, Chapel Of Ghouls by Morbid Angel. He then said "a version of this track is on Grindcrusher: an Earache compilation. Pay no more than £3.99 for this record."

Next day I went to my local record shop and bought it. On the back of that I bought albums by Morbid Angel, Carcass, Boltthrower, Napalm Death, Terrorizer and Godflesh. Streetcleaner, the Godflesh album, is a masterpiece of its genre imo. I found it mesmeric, and used it as go to sleep music. I'd describe them as slowed down Industrial, like Suicide on Mogadon.

As for other 80s bands, I loved A-ha, A Flock Of Seagulls, ABC, Culture Club, Dead Kennedys etc.

Thisarmingman · 27/05/2017 19:09

Story of the Blues is an awesome track - just majestic.

Agree with others that the charts turned to shit circa 1987. I listen to the golden hour on R2 if I'm in and whenever they do 1987 regardless of what week it was it is unremittingly awful.

After that you do at least get house/dance music (not really my bag at the time but well even though I wasn't a raver I went to raves because why not) but that particular year was awful, chartwise.

happyhebe · 27/05/2017 19:09

I have found my people, indie 80s fans, I salute you.

MotherofPearl · 27/05/2017 19:11

Big High Fives to all the other 1974 babies on this thread!
So nice to be reminded of all the 80s music greats. I am quite partial to a bit of Absolute 80s Radio. Blush

millefeuille1 · 27/05/2017 19:39

I was born in 63 so in my late teens/20s in the 80s. Blue Monday was the absolute soundtrack to my student days but also loved Bowie, Blondie, Talk Talk, Big Country, Erasure, Alison Moyet, Grace Jones and Roxy Music (How cool was Bryan Ferry??). I remain a huge Pet Shop Boys fan and see them whenever I can. Not many people get that these days!

zukiecat · 27/05/2017 20:05

Oh yes, I was just entering my teen years in 1980!

Best decade ever for music

OMD
Ultravox
Japan
Danny Wilson
The Proclaimers
The Dream Factory
All About Eve
Paul Young
Duran Duran
Spandau Balket
Visage

Oh lots more!

EddieHitler · 27/05/2017 20:07

So much brilliant music around then, some 80's bands I loved; SLF, The Specials, Jam/Style Council, Housemartins, Joy Division, Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout, Deacon Blue, New Order and Talking Heads, to name but a few. I stayed on the mainstream indie theme into the 90's too.

zukiecat · 27/05/2017 20:07

Oh and the best song of the whole decade

The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats!

Absolutely adore that song and the crazy video Grin

EddieHitler · 27/05/2017 20:10

Zukiecat I love that song.

specialsubject · 27/05/2017 20:11

We can dance if we want to....

Because there were tunes. Memorable tunes. More than one note.

Not shrieky bleaty whiny. Yes, a lot of rubbish but even the rubbish was sing along. And the t o t p audience, smiling not pouting and having fun because they didn't have phones. Happy days.

DramaAlpaca · 27/05/2017 20:14

zukiecat I adored that song too, I even bought the 12" version. Then when I split up with my boyfriend of the time he kept it and wouldn't give it back

millefeuille Blue Monday was the soundtrack to my student days too. Brings back so many memories.

BestIsWest · 27/05/2017 20:28

Tainted Love, A Town Called Malice and Party Fears Two were the songs of my time at uni.

CancellyMcChequeface · 27/05/2017 20:29

I watched this last night, and Sounds of the 80s afterwards. I was born in 1987 but love 80s music -much better than the stuff that was around when I was a teenager.

Tiddler7 · 27/05/2017 20:30

If you want a Happy Birthday from Boy George, just send him a tweet, and what I can see he's quite likely to tweet you HBD x

MumBod · 27/05/2017 20:34

We were watching TOTP2 the other night and Culture Club were on doing Victims.

I was just blown away by how gorgeous Boy George's voice was. We just took it for granted at the time. People commented more on his appearance.

Stock, Aitken and Waterman have a lot to answer for in my opinion. It was downhill from there for pop. You had to go alternative/indie for quality after they invaded the charts with Neighbours actors and ex-teaboys Angry

MumBod · 27/05/2017 20:35

I was a 1974 baby too Smile

BattleaxeGalactica · 27/05/2017 20:48

I defy anyone's feet not to at least tap to the intro to Billie Jean.

Michael Jackson at his peak.

Favourite Culture Club song is Karma Chameleon but it seems to get regularly overlooked likewise Rio by Duran Duran. So much genuine talent in that era, so unlike today's manufactured and digitised pap.

ShelaghTurner · 27/05/2017 21:24

Ah but did any of you see Kajagoogoo live? No, thought not Grin

redshoeblueshoe · 27/05/2017 21:24

I thought my 8 year old GD would love Cindy Lauper, so I put Girls just wanna have fun on for her on youtube.
She immediately said why do they all have such bad hair
A week later she asked me Nanna were you born in the 1880's
you can go off people Grin

MrsWicket · 27/05/2017 21:25

Absolute 80's is our go to radio station in our house. LOVE 80's music. Japan were the first group I saw live - David Sylvian

ShelaghTurner · 27/05/2017 21:25

DD1's (9) choir is practising True Colours so I showed her who really sings it and she laughed her head off Angry

MusicToMyEars800 · 27/05/2017 21:32

I love a bit of Cyndi Lauper, especially true colours and Time after time.
