AIBU to be a little freaked, living in London?

According to the Prime Minister.
Army being called in to beef up security and key sites.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 23/05/2017 21:58

it's currently still at severe accordng to .gov sites and MI5....and has been since 2015

Wiki are claiming it's up to critical from today.

EveningShadows · 23/05/2017 21:58

Paris was on the 13th, Nice was on the 13th. I doubt it's a pattern.

I really don't understand the point of not going to a wedding Confused

myoriginal3 · 23/05/2017 21:59

Gowgirl - the threat level has been severe up to now. It's just now updated to critical.

Kokusai · 23/05/2017 21:59

so an attack is imminent

Seriously unhelpful phrasing OP.

Why did you feel the need to sensationalize what is actually a fucking scary enough situation? Why not report accurately what was said?

"UK terror threat level raised to highest level of 'critical', meaning further attack may be imminent, prime minister says"

Crunchymum · 23/05/2017 21:59

What about all the attacks that don't fit into your theory Daytona? Like the attacks in Nice and Paris?

MirandaWest · 23/05/2017 21:59

That thing with 22nd dates doesn't show anything. Apart from things having happened on some 22nds in the past.

dun1urkin · 23/05/2017 21:59

It's breaking news on the BBC

Catzpyjamas · 23/05/2017 21:59

Teresa May just made a statement from Downing Street. In it she raised the threat level from Severe to Critical and the implementation of Operation Temperer will use up to 5,000 troops to take over armed police patrol duties under police command. Guardian link

BandeauSally · 23/05/2017 21:59

daytona there have been more terror attacks than those in the last 5 years. Do you have dates for them?

Guitargirl · 23/05/2017 22:00

I could be wrong but I think the stated threat level has an implication for levels of security around public buildings, police presence on transport, that kind of thing.

For example, whenever I have been to a work meeting in a government department the threat level has been on a board in the foyer with an explanation of the need for a bag search...So, I don't think the threat level is stated so much for the public's benefit but more for those services who have the unenviable task of trying to keep the rest of us safe Sad.

callmehannahbaker · 23/05/2017 22:00

I have a lot of friends/colleagues attending/working radio 1's big weekend this weekend.
They are upping security massively, however, the event will still go on, this country cannot be too scared to continue.

insomniMax · 23/05/2017 22:00

It's only because they can't say for sure at this stage that the bomber acted alone. Raising it to critical means the military get drafted in to support the police.

We're on high alert as it's less than 24 hours since the attack, and we should be. But that doesn't necessarily mean another attack is literally imminent, just that we're increasing security/investigation resources.

PlayOnWurtz · 23/05/2017 22:00

I'm ambivalent to it. We can't let these cunts scare us away from living our normal lives.

myoriginal3 · 23/05/2017 22:00

Kokusai - because I'm not a fucking reporter. I'm just a citizen who is slightly freaked.

OP posts:
sonjadog · 23/05/2017 22:00

Your date for the Manchester attack is wrong, daytona. So that ruins your "coincidence" with the dates...

Quartz2208 · 23/05/2017 22:00

Reading it I think there are concerns that like 7/7 and Paris a terror cell is in play rather than just a lone bomber, so further attacks would be linked

Crunchymum · 23/05/2017 22:00

I'm a Londoner and I must admit I'm thankful I can walk into work (I do live centrally mind!) and that none of us need to use public transport it be too central.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 23/05/2017 22:01

It might be unhelpful phrasing but it is the OFFICIAL phrasing in that the threat being raised to Critical means an attack is imminent. Jesus don't leap on people for quoting the fucking Prime Minister.

Viviennemary · 23/05/2017 22:01

It's terrifying. I won't be going anywhere near city centres for the time being. I don't think it's scaremongering. They must have intelligence to suggest an attack is imminent.

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 23/05/2017 22:01

*may

MadisonAvenue · 23/05/2017 22:01

My son gets back from university tomorrow which is great, he'll be under our roof and safe...but he's off to London with his girlfriend at the weekend.
Fuck fuck fuck. He's an adult, too old to be told to cancel.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 23/05/2017 22:01

My DH is going to London tomorrow. He goes in twice a week but he will carry on as normal. You can't stop living your life.

Even if there is an attack the chances of you being involved are minuscule. I think we all have a better chance of dying in a car accident every single day than being involved in a terror attack (cheeryHmm)

sonjadog · 23/05/2017 22:01

Oh, I looked at the wrong thing. Your date is right, sorry.

Your theory is still nonsense though.

loaferloveforyou · 23/05/2017 22:02

I'm gonna go about my usual business including commuting to London every day.

I'd rather that than live in fear to do anything. That's no life.

I'll be as vigilant as I usually am.
