To ask people who are O- near Manchester to go and give blood

Aparently they have run out.

OP posts:
FairyDogMother11 · 23/05/2017 11:52

I'm not in the area and cannot give blood due to medical reasons but I'm bumping this up. I am actually O- and donated 9 times before I had to stop almost four years ago, I'm 23 now and would have been able to donate so much more and help so much more so I always implore anyone to do it in my stead!

Nickynackynoodle · 23/05/2017 11:54

Nhs blood services have made a statement that they have sufficient blood at present and the best thing you can do if you want to help is register and donate regularly.

Zoflorabore · 23/05/2017 11:55

I am on holiday abroad and am gutted not to be able to do this, this is my blood group and I'm from Liverpool which is only half an hour away. If still needed after Sunday I will gladly do it.

Woke up to the news here and am so saddened by it. Ds has two friends who went last but thankfully are safe.

ExPresidents · 23/05/2017 12:06

Where have you got that from Brie? Lots of reports saying they are not accepting any new registrations in Manchester as they already had enough and have had a huge surge in registrations.

Great to encourage people to give blood locally on a regular basis though.

RuggerHug · 23/05/2017 12:12

It's great that they don't have the urgent need now, hopefully it might inspire people who aren't regular donators to go again in 3 months (if UK has same time limits as here). Bumping in case anyone else is thinking about it. Blood is always needed and thank you to those who can and do donate.

Says who? Stop spreading false news.

Says who? Stop spreading false news.

Quite.

FFS stupid people spreading fake news

Nickynackynoodle · 23/05/2017 12:54

People have absolutely no ability to critically appraise whatever pops into their banal Facebook feed.

It's pretty fucking dim to take everything at face value.

SumThucker · 23/05/2017 12:58

It's also pretty fucking nasty calling people dim and stupid who are trying to help in some way.

PerkingFaintly · 23/05/2017 12:59

Flowers Brie for starting a well meant-thread.

But as others say, checking with GiveBlood NHS they've actually got enough blood for now. They are asking people to register in the future though.

Maybe report this thread and get it pulled or the title changed? I'll report as well.

Yukbuck · 23/05/2017 13:00

The op is right. It was just discussed on radio 5 live that they are low on 0-
Please stop bashing the op. This is a horrible day for everyone, why be petty?

HateSummer · 23/05/2017 13:02

It is pretty impossible for blood to just "run out" in this country. Haematology stock large quantities of blood with extra bags for emergencies and when and if there's a shortage, it can be couriered immediately from nearby hospitals. I've known lab and clinical staff with a blood match to offer blood aswell if there's a shortage.

In response to last night's tragic incident in #Manchester - we have all the blood required for hospital patients at the present time.

We are responding to last night's tragic incident in Manchester.

Our thoughts are with the people affected by this tragic incident. We do have all the blood required for hospital patients at the current time.

If you have an appointment to give blood in the next few days, please do your best to keep it, particularly if you are blood group O negative.

Confuzzlediddled · 23/05/2017 13:05

I got so fed up with people posting crap like that over fb I asked people to think about what they're posting - the stupidest one is the xx unidentified kids are at xx hotel phone them - as if the police would just ignore these hordes of children!!

PerkingFaintly · 23/05/2017 13:06

And Brew and Cake for everyone, without even needing to be stuck with needles.

We're all understandably upset at the moment, and inclined to snippiness.

People need to verify things from a reputable source before spreading it. Facebook is not a reputable source.

It isn't 'helpful' in any way to spread lies, it adds to panic and fear.

SumThucker · 23/05/2017 13:27

I'm aware of that, thanks.

It isn't 'helpful' in any way to spread lies, it adds to panic and fear.

Obviously... People aren't purposely spreading 'lies' though, they're trying to be helpful. No need to call them dim and stupid.

Yukbuck · 23/05/2017 13:39

Have I missed where the op said they got their information from Facebook?
They may not even have Facebook. Someone has posted an update from the blood donation people saying that they have enough but would particularly like 0-
Like I've said I heard it on radion 5 too. So it's important to spread things..

hackmum · 23/05/2017 13:46

I'm afraid I'm pretty fed up with people posting stuff like this too. Why not take a minute to check? A friend of mine on Facebook, who's a journalist, has posted exactly the same thing about needing people to donate O negative blood. It's not true - except in the sense that they need people who have already made appointments to donate blood to keep them.

People are always very eager to help after a tragedy like this. But in truth, most of the time blood isn't needed. If you want to be helpful, one of the ways you could start is by not spreading disinformation.

DingDong01 · 23/05/2017 13:46

It was just discussed on radio 5 live that they are low on 0-
They will just need to replenish their stocks of O- in case of another major incident

sheeeshh · 23/05/2017 13:49

This. ^

I hate it when people share bollocks such as 'They've run out of blood!!!'. Use your loaf.

Kokusai · 23/05/2017 13:53

People aren't purposely spreading 'lies' though, they're trying to be helpful

It doesn't matter if they mean to spread a lie, or if they do it because they are too dim/lazy to fact check. The end result is the same.
