In a debate with someone over this

Is DP "dip" if OP is "awp"?

NinjaLeprechaun · 24/05/2017 05:08

"Jip? Is that a joke?"
LMAO (pronounced Luhmaow). If it's going to be read "as written" then it would be jip before it was guhp, wouldn't it? Based on the fact that G is pronounced "Jee".

Although I don't know why people are struggling with the idea of acronyms being turned into words, it happens. (Radar: RAdio Detection And Ranging, being the first example I think of.)

coconuttella · 24/05/2017 05:18

I 'say' "op" as in "shop" in my head, as it took me a while to realise what the hell it meant, and by the time I realised it was stuck. Had I known from the off what OP stood for I think I'd 'say' Oh-pee.

JanetBrown2015 · 24/05/2017 05:51

So everyone who does not say oh pee pronounces MP instead of em pee (mmmm p) do they? If not why not? Are they not consistent people?

SpecialFlowSnake · 24/05/2017 05:58

I say Oh-pee.

DH is Dick Head at least 50% of the time IRL: and 98% MN time.

Another board I visit is littered with references to FH and FEx. The F is not for Future. Angry

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2017 06:37

Every time I see OP written here I think OP as in Order of Preachers, the Dominicans.

spottysuperted · 24/05/2017 07:15

Doll goal and LOL sound the same to me Blush

KoalaDownUnder · 24/05/2017 08:17

Doll and lol rhyme. Short 'o'.

Goal, pole and foal rhyme. Long 'o'.

That said, I am Australian so all my vowels sound like I'm chewing on wasps. Grin

paxillin · 24/05/2017 08:23

You're loaling, spottysuperted?

ihop · 24/05/2017 08:24

I say Oh Pee because it's an abbreviation not a word so pronunciation follows the same rules as GP.

spottysuperted · 24/05/2017 08:26

pax I'm on a train muttering away to myself to work out if I've been saying all these words wrong Grin

YouCanStandMeUpSpartacus · 24/05/2017 09:13

Hmm. talking Poor is different for me, but pore and pour sound the same. Poor rhymes with sure. Pore rhymes with fore.

MiddleClassProblem · 24/05/2017 09:31

Do you mean you pronounce it poower and shoower?

Sure and fore rhyme here!

YouCanStandMeUpSpartacus · 24/05/2017 09:35

No, those are three different sounds for me:
poo -- poor
po -- pore
pow -- power
For you, those are just one sound?

Demesne · 24/05/2017 09:36

Seriously, who the hell doesn't know what an acronym is?

SandyDenny · 24/05/2017 09:42

I say Oh Pee because it's an abbreviation not a word so pronunciation follows the same rules as GP.

No it's not, it's the inital letters of two words, who would pronounce it any other way than the two letters themselves?

Are you confused about what abbreviation means?

insomniMax · 24/05/2017 09:44

Surely if OP was 'awp/opp' then DH would be 'duhhhh'. Actually that's quite fitting for some of the threads about DHs Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 24/05/2017 09:44

I meant pronounce poor poower not power.
Power and poor do not sound the same in my accent or any I can think of but poor, pour and pore do.

FairNotFair · 24/05/2017 09:46

I've just realised that I pronounce "DH" as "Duh" in my head Blush

HateSummer · 24/05/2017 09:46

OP is Oh Pee

AIBU, is ay boo

YANBU is Yan Boo

FairNotFair · 24/05/2017 09:47

Xpost, insomni! (Although I do say Oh-pee, so I'm fascinatingly inconsistent)

DameSquashalot · 24/05/2017 17:59

I pronounce it as opp...

SugarnetMum · 24/05/2017 18:20

Some people are getting so literal! I'm only on about Op not dh or aibu or anything like that, but for the record if I was pronouncing aibu in my head I read it as the letters go.. A I b u

PlumPuzzle · 26/05/2017 00:59

If I am trying to speak properly then 'doll'and 'goal' don't rhyme, as one is a short vowel and the other is a long one.

However, in everyday speech I pronounce 'doll' like 'dole'.

Then again, I also pronounce 'owl' as 'ow-ool', so I'm no expert. Grin

WeirdAndPissedOff · 26/05/2017 01:15

OP is oh-pee. Aibu is eye-boo.
Hmm, the doll one is weird. I pronounce doll/goal/bowl/troll the same.
However the Bollywood comparison made me think that I would pronounce dolly the same way as Bolly - how odd.
I do pronounce lol differently - more Billy
