To consider the Conservatives' manifesto pretty decent on the whole?

Pretty decent in terms in principles, that is ... as so often with manifestos it's too thin on costings

Main points here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-39960311

Yabu. It's shit.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/05/2017 18:24

(Diane Abbot) doesn't look well. She comes across as sort of vacant

I hate to mention this, but to me she's always looked "vacant" - probably because she doesn't have much of substance to say, and lacks ability to articulate even the little she has properly

Isn't it possible that we're just noticing it more, now that so many have refused to work with Corbyn and she's being pushed further forward?

OP posts:
citroenpresse · 19/05/2017 18:34

She wasn't a bit 'vacant' on the late night politics programme alongside Portillo and Andrew Neil a while back. They were the most incongruous double act but v. funny. To suggest that all MPs are faced with exactly the same pressures or risks is just ridiculous. But she shouldn't be out there if she can't handle the brief.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/05/2017 18:35

But she shouldn't be out there if she can't handle the brief.

That is the big point. It was her policy and her brief.

citroenpresse · 19/05/2017 18:47

Is it the big point? She doesn't look well so for me, the flak should be directed in the labour campaign office. Maybe that's why they are getting extra help. But re an actual cabinet minister with an actual brief on foreign policy, doesn't this terrify you?:
“Clearly, the Trump administration-to-be has a very exciting agenda of change." May (and Tory HQ) very sensibly keeping Boris out of the news except for novelty head great (which is always popular) and he couldn't even get that right without causing huge offence.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/05/2017 19:07

Yes it is.

We have no idea if she is well or not and tbh therefore saying it is coming accross as a bit of an excuse for the way she performed.

She wants to be Home Secretary and it was her policy.

I don't like Boris either and don't understand the appeal however it is whataboutery saying she was bad but what about him.

NoLotteryWinYet · 19/05/2017 19:30

Just catching up on the thread - you couldn't make up Corbyn not knowing a key Tory policy in sufficient detail - we know, and this isn't even our day job! Unbelievable.

I am concerned though that bringing housing assets into the calculation for long term care is another source of stress for disabled people and the long term disabled may bear the brunt of this policy. Not sure if they have any kind of exemption in the detail - anybody know?

I17neednumbers · 19/05/2017 19:35

It is so interesting that there has been so much focus on this aspect of the manifesto.

It is, indeed, all about inheritance - yet nobody has mentioned that both lab and lib dem manifestoes are to reverse the recent increases in the iht threshold. I read somewhere lab will reduce it to 425k (from the current 900 once you include the additional family house allowance). That will have a bit impact on many home owners in London/SE.

Is the reason there is so little coverage of it because nobody has noticed that part of the lab manifesto, or is it because everyone is convinced the cons will win so that is the only manifesto that matters?
I no longer think she will get a landslide (might nc on the night!)

Charmageddon · 19/05/2017 19:47

I no longer think she will get a landslide (might nc on the night!)

Me too!

I've said before that I'm genuinely fearful of Jezza pulling a Trump.
We will be living in a communist dystopia in no time...

Dawndonnaagain · 19/05/2017 19:52

Charmageddon thanks for being the first person to make me laugh today. I needed it!

I17neednumbers · 19/05/2017 19:57

It would be interesting to know if the social care policy was tested on focus groups etc. The reaction has surprised me.

Funnily enough quite a lot of labour people (as far as I can tell) support it, although the labour leaders obviously don't. Whereas con voters on tinternet now saying 'i won't vote now' - I suspect they will in the end though...

Charmageddon · 19/05/2017 19:58

Dawn, I know you're being tongue in cheek...!

I've seen you on other threads recently, especially a recent post about your daughter, and want to say I hope you all get the best outcome you possibly can from the stuff you're dealing with at the mo Flowers

I might be a Tory this time round, but it doesn't define me entirely, honest WinkSmile

makeourfuture · 19/05/2017 19:59

Has anyone really been able to make sense of it though? A lot of confusion out there.

citroenpresse · 19/05/2017 20:05

900? NRBs plus new house thing...325 + 325 + 100.

I17neednumbers · 19/05/2017 20:14

Citroen it's that plus another 100 (you can use your spouse's additional 100 if s/he has not already used it) = 900. I think.

Hence the speculation that the threshold will go down to 425 - though if labour was only reversing the most recent change it would go back to 650.

Lab may have revealed the precise figure, but nobody is taking any notice (oh, apart from the Evening Standard, which did point that many properties in London/SE will be above the threshold if it goes down to previous levels)

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/05/2017 20:17

I've said before that I'm genuinely fearful of Jezza pulling a Trump.

He won't. He is way too far behind in the polls. People forget that Clinton and Trump were actually quite close in the polls.

I17neednumbers · 19/05/2017 20:18

Still 3 weeks to go Piglet! Anything can happen.....

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/05/2017 20:18

I no longer think she will get a landslide (might nc on the night!)

I never thought she would get a landslide. I do think she will get a significant majority though.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/05/2017 20:20

Still 3 weeks to go Piglet! Anything can happen

Yes but remember the Tory team and press really haven't started on Corbyn yet. Or McDonnell for that matter.

NoLotteryWinYet · 19/05/2017 20:20

The tories will be fine - they have so much leeway because the labour team can't even look competent for a few weeks. People fundamentally believed Trump had to be competent because of all the money he's made (I know he inherited most of it).

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/05/2017 20:23

The thing is on threads like this and SM we are in a bit of a political echo chamber.

If threads on here and Twitter were anything to go by you would think that the majority of remainers were completely up in arms about Brexit and the majority wanted a second referendum.

The truth is that isn't the case. If it was then the LibDems would be doing a lot better than the poor polling they are at the moment.

JamieXeed74 · 19/05/2017 21:06

I no longer think she will get a landslide (might nc on the night!)

LOL that is Conservative strategy, they need people to think a landslide isn't guaranteed so their supporters will go out to vote. Looks like the plan is working.

HelenaDove · 19/05/2017 21:17

Just seen this on Twitter Apparently someone from the City was approached months ago about an "insurance product"

JanetBrown2015 · 19/05/2017 21:26

Different age groups have different concerns. One my 18 year olds sent me material about the proposed Tory internet - he and I have very strong views on internet freedom (one of the few issues we agree on) and he's keen on fox protection (not something we agree on) whereas things like care for older people I suppose just does not seem relevant.

Yes, don't assume the Tories will win,. I've been saying right from the start get out there and vote whoever you will vote for. Nothing can be taken for granted. It would be really good to have a really big turn out.

makeourfuture · 19/05/2017 21:29

There does seem to be, with the cofusion over this, a serious breakdown in conmunications. Has something changed?
