Just that really. I know a few and my god do they ever preach on and on about their coconut oil macha powder cacao powder chia seed energy balls and milk industry and calves being killed etc. It's the over earnestness and attitude that they are the most enlightened people to walk this planet that wind me up. It reminds me of being 18 again.

I'd like to try reindeer milk though.

Its gross, don't bother! I had it in mongolia.

Natsku · 16/05/2017 17:32

Damn, guess I'll cross that one off the list then.

user1493759849 · 16/05/2017 17:35

Haven't RTFT, but whilst I have no problems with vegans because it's their choice; what I will say is that some people I know who are vegans (or should I say CLAIM to be!) eat cheese and dairy based stuff on the sly.

In addition, my daughter started veganism several years ago, and it affected her health. She was seriously lacking in nutrients and was always tired and ALWAYS fucking ill. She had a cold 80% of the time, I shit you not. Also a mini op she had that cause a bruise, would not heal.

She had the bruise from the op, for a MONTH (it should have healed within 4-6 days.) So I gave her an omelette a day for 3 days, as I was sick of it, and insisted she ate it. The bruise disappeared 90% within 72 hours!

In addition, my niece (who was a vegan) fell over on the ice and snapped a bone in her arm. The doctor said anyone else would not have broke a bone with such a slight fall, and that her bones were weak. Not long after that, she stopped her veganism.

It's all very well if you're Madonna, and you have people cooking fancy food and making sure you get all the nutrients, but my daughter (and several of her pals,) AND my niece have had health issues because of being a vegan!

Silly, faddy, ridiculous eating IMO.

ArcheryAnnie · 16/05/2017 17:40

kimonolady vegans aren't a group subject to structural oppression, and your comment on page one is pretty ridiculous.

I'm not a vegan - hell, I'm not even a vegetarian - but we eat vegan a lot of the time. I think it's generally a good thing to be, and I obviously have no problem with people being vegan - all power to their elbow, etc etc. What I find annoying is when I am preached to, as if I wasn't aware of the issues already, and what I find deeply weird is when "being vegan" is a core part of someone's identity, as it so often seems to be. I mean, it's eating. I love food, and lots of it, but unless you are a chef or a food critic, it doesn't take up every moment of your day, and it's not the constant topic of every sodding conversation.

It's like that old joke: "How do you know when someone you've just met is vegan? Don't worry - they'll tell you."

Ylvamoon · 16/05/2017 17:44

Cake don't touch! It's made with gelatin!

RadgePacket · 16/05/2017 17:48

It's the over earnestness and attitude that they are the most enlightened people to walk this planet that wind me up.

I don't agree with this. Vegans believe that an animals life is equal to a human life. Basically everyone and everything has the same value. As such they don't believe they are superior.

I'm not a vegan either Smile

AwaywiththePixies27 · 16/05/2017 18:13

The doctor said anyone else would not have broke a bone with such a slight fall, and that her bones were weak. Not long after that, she stopped her veganism.

How old was your Niece? My carnivorous meat eating DD suffered a broken foot without even falling. She was having a race with her friends and she twisted her foot funny and 'snap'.

Point being, you don't even need to fall, slight or not, to break something.

MaisyPops · 16/05/2017 18:19

It's the over earnestness and attitude that they are the most enlightened people to walk this planet that wind me up.

This through and through.

I don't mind people being vegan. I used to be vegetarian.

I do mind the group of Evangelical vegans who think that because they are vegan they are somehow morally superior to anyone who isn't.

It's a bit like religion. Make the choices for your life that are right for you but don't go on at me about why your choices are better than anyone else's.

perhapsiwill · 16/05/2017 18:29

My Dh was sat at a table at a wedding with a couple who were vegan, and they were preaching to him. They obviously ordered their vegan meals, and they hadn't come.
Dh retorted to the waiting staff 'can't you just give them a pair of scissors for the grass?'
I think that shut them up?!

What an arsehole.
You all sound like bullies with all this vegan bashing.

perhapsiwill · 16/05/2017 18:30

And don't use obviously for no reason, it's annoying.

ddssdd · 16/05/2017 18:32

Vegetarians and vegans are treated as if we think we are precious. We aren't. I've never once made a derogatory comment about someone eating meat, all I'm concerned about is that I don't. I've been dumped for being a vege, been called weird, been taken the Mick out of by family members, if I've gone out for a meal with friends, it seems to be a big deal that I don't want to eat what they do Hmm It really pisses me off.

In fact, the only time I think about it is when someone (who knows I don't eat meat) has to bring it up, time and time again.

selsigfach · 16/05/2017 18:33

New vegan has always flown frequently (work and pleasure, but I'm sure half the jobs were selected on the basis of all the exotic adventures they entailed jealous). I've no problem whatsoever with at someone going vegan, we in the west eat far too many animal products, I just think the pretence going vegan will balance out your otherwise incredible carbon-heavy lifestyle is a joke.

MaisyPops · 16/05/2017 18:34

ddssdd
Most vegans and vegetarians are perfectly reasonable. Sounds like you are.

My gripe with evangelistic vegans is like people who are in diets and prattle on about 5:2, good food and bad foods, did you know there's 76 different types of protein and according to something I saw online one might increase your risk for colon cancer.

I food opinion people irritating. Vegan or not vegan

perhapsiwill · 16/05/2017 18:34

By the way, to all the people who go on about vegan diets being bad for your health- the hospitals are not full of vegans. They are full of obese meat eaters with diabetes, cancer and all the rest.

CoteDAzur · 16/05/2017 18:40

Vegans are a minute part of the population so it is not surprising if most hospital residents are not vegan. Most students, most doctors, most athletes, and most scientists are not vegan, either so can we conclude that vegans are not as smart and educated as the rest of us?

Or should we remember that correlation is not causation?

I think the latter.

CoteDAzur · 16/05/2017 18:42

You don't get obese and diabetic from eating meat, by the way. How utterly ridiculous. Those have to do with sugar including carbohydrates (pasta, rice, etc) which the vegan diet relies on for its calories, in the absence of animal protein and fat.

Spoog1971xx · 16/05/2017 18:42

As a whole yes they are very annoying. However much like Jeremy Corbyn, disliking them doesn't make their message invalid.

peripericardium · 16/05/2017 18:42

Vegans are just a socially acceptable way for unpleasant people to get in their 5mins of hate.

Much like red-haired people are socially acceptable targets for unpleasant people to bully.

ddssdd · 16/05/2017 18:51

That's right, maisypop. I think we should all decide what we want to put in our mouths without being made to feel bad or preached at.

Mrsgbythesea · 16/05/2017 18:55

I am a vegan, started 4 months ago just see if I felt better healthwise on a vegan diet, turns out I felt a whole lot better so I'm sticking with the vegan thing.

Couldn't give a crap what the rest of you eat, but interesting how non vegans all become nutritional experts the minute you mention you don't eat meat or diary!! - it's just as irritating as the preachy vegans!

anon1987 · 16/05/2017 18:55

Cote I'm no vegan (and correct me vegans if I'm wrong) but you don't rely on pasta and rice etc do you?

A lot of vegans eat beans mainly. Some vegans live entirely on fruit and vegetables l.

user1490734428 · 16/05/2017 18:56

I mean, I can understand why a lot are like that - they've just had this epiphany that meat eating is evil and OMG, everyone must know! Kind of like when someone announces they support the political party you hate and you're itching to convince them over to your side.

Having said that, it's annoying AF. Luckily the ones I've encountered have been quiet and nice types who don't mind me eating meat next to them (I ask if it's OK). Not the wanky chia seed kind.

ArcheryAnnie · 16/05/2017 18:58

perhapsiwill so it's OK for two people at a wedding dinner to harrass a thrid about his eating choices, but then if he retailiates with a faily mild dig, it's "bullying"? OK then.

As I said, I've got no problem with veganism as a diet, and often personally eat vegan food (though I am not vegan), but I think it actively harms veganism being taken up by more people when vegans see themselves as some sort of oppressed minority and the rest of us as miserable sinners who have to be converted.

MsJuniper · 16/05/2017 18:59

We started eating mostly vegan recently after watching Carnage. It was excellent because it wasn't preachy and was in fact very funny.

I am not particularly emotional about animals and I still like meat, but I do care about the environment and about intensive farming (incl dairy) and I would like to do what I can to minimise my impact. I'm under no illusions that I am living the most ethical life possible, but I figure that some contribution can't hurt.

We're keeping our health as a priority so learning about nutrition and we are avoiding convenience foods where possible, but also keeping things simple and not being obsessive over hidden restaurant ingredients. DS is still omni as I wouldn't be confident I was meeting his needs otherwise but we are making him more veggie meals.

perhapsiwill · 16/05/2017 19:03

Archeryannie I am not preachy at all in RL. I smile politely as people question my diet all the bloody time, I try to explain without offending them and their eating habits why I personally don't eat meat.

I listen to the kind of jibes your hilarious husband makes all the time, "oh she can eat some leaves or something" . I bring my own food to all family get togethers as I don't want to be a PITA. I am just letting you know that we get it all the time. It's boring.
