To be Furious at this Delivery Driver

Delivery due today and I'm working from home to receive it. See the driver from my downstairs office and get up to go to the door...literally about eight feet away. He knocks and immediately tries the door to my home. Door's unlocked, starts to open and I'm already there to see him do this. He quickly shuts it when he sees me approach the door and apologises when I open it and roast him but I'm fuming!

This is the second time that this has happened in a week, the first time, the delivery wasn't even for me but for a Neighbour (my annoyance the last time was lost in the fact that they didn't even have the right house) Both times, car on the drive and no attempt from the driver to wait for someone to come to the door. I genuinely don't know if it was the same person both times.

Agree with McSmith - often zero hours contract workers - lots of parcels and have to rush. Lock your door if it bothers you that someone tries it (is it a porch type front).

Simple solution for you really.

My sister was home by herself and a guy (complete sranger) came to the door asking to use the toilet, speaking through the letterbox! The door was locked and she rang the police. He was long gone by the time they arrived. I dread to think what might have happened if the door had been unlocked. I also know of someone who walked into their living room, from their kitchen one day, to find someone carrying the telly away. The delivery driver was totally out of order opening the door to your home without prior permission, and I'd be furious if that was me, but I'd also be locking the doors from now on.

I'm a country mouse. Our door didn't even close properly, never mind lock.

It was a struggle when I went to uni to learn key discipline.

When living in a city for a while someone came in through my unlocked front door while I was in the bath and burgled some things. The insurance paid out.

I still leave my front door unlocked when I'm in, and unlocked at night too.

Where I live now the risk of burglary is significantly lower than the risk of house fire. The front and back door require keys to lock or unlock. my children are small and would not be able to open a locked door.

The risk assessment here is clearly in favour of doors unlocked when people are in the house, so that's what we do.

Posties and deliveries have been known to one the door to pop something in. I'm ok with that, though was startled the first time it happened and talked to the postie about it. He did it because he knew I was disabled and struggled to get to the door, and I decided I was ok with that. Friends and family open, shout a greeting and come on in. Kids come and go to garden freely.

Yes, someone could take my car keys, iPad, purse, whatever in theory. In reality it's a negligible risk, involving possible financial loss, when compared to the risk being trapped in a house fire with doors locked, involving loss of life.

This thread has a lot of really disrespectful posts. Clearly there's are different ways to manage your door locking, but negligent vs paranoid is not how it is.
