To be Furious at this Delivery Driver

Delivery due today and I'm working from home to receive it. See the driver from my downstairs office and get up to go to the door...literally about eight feet away. He knocks and immediately tries the door to my home. Door's unlocked, starts to open and I'm already there to see him do this. He quickly shuts it when he sees me approach the door and apologises when I open it and roast him but I'm fuming!

This is the second time that this has happened in a week, the first time, the delivery wasn't even for me but for a Neighbour (my annoyance the last time was lost in the fact that they didn't even have the right house) Both times, car on the drive and no attempt from the driver to wait for someone to come to the door. I genuinely don't know if it was the same person both times.
AIBU?

I am sitting at my desk now. mumsnetting Listening in to a company presentation. My front door is unlocked and on the latch Shock I have workmen virtually full time at the moment. I cannot go and unlock to let them in every single time they come and go for supplies or lunch breaks as I am on the phone a lot, or trying to get some mumsnetting work done.
It is a judgement I am comfortable with because this street is quiet and safe. If I lived in a rough area, I would have to deal with things differently.
Have occasionally had delivery drivers pop parcels in the porch when I have not got to the door in 10 seconds . Can't say it's bothered me particularly.

BoredandConfused · 15/05/2017 14:32

Had a shit morning and a gentle roasting for leaving my door unlocked is actually welcome right now. It's generally not an issue but I do see where you're coming from and don't disagree.

I do think he was out of order for trying a stranger's door at all, let alone without giving them the opportunity to answer. AIBU about that?

They don't like hanging about. I had a cot delivered last week, knew it was coming. I was upstairs when he knocked and we don't live in a big house. Got downstairs and he said I was just about to give up and see if I could drag it into your garden.

HildaOg · 15/05/2017 14:33

Lock your door if you don't want people barging in on you.

MagicMarkers · 15/05/2017 14:34

My MIL told me two recent stories about neighbours/relatives having burglars walking in through unlocked front doors and stealing from the house and in one case being confronted by the burglars. They all live in rural villages. I asked her, "Do you lock your door now?" As a city person I was always surprised that they leave it unlocked during the day. "Oh no, there's no need".

He shouldn't have opened the door, but it's weird to leave it unlocked.

gillybeanz · 15/05/2017 14:34

I don't get why the door wasn't locked either.
It's much easier to keep it locked than have to lock it every time you move from your office, may a brew, go to the loo etc.

The driver shouldn't have tried the door though, I've never heard of this before.

Jungfraujoch · 15/05/2017 14:35

I can't believe anyone doesn't lock their front door! Even if you can see people approaching - you're not sat there 24/7 presumably?

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 15/05/2017 14:37

OP. We work from home too and never lock our doors, so you aren't the only one. I woudl complain to the delivery company if I were you, they have no right to open your door!

As an aside, there is nothing in our insurance to say we have to lock our doors, we live rurally so not sure if that makes a difference.

And stop blaming the OP! If you had your phone stolen whilst walking down the street, you woudnt say "you shouldn't have taken it outside"

Jungfraujoch · 15/05/2017 14:39

I meant to add though that yes I agree the guy shouldn't have tried the door, although that has happened to me sometimes as it looks like it's a porch where they could leave a parcel - maybe it's the same for you? But my door cannot be opened from outside, even when unlocked on inside IFYSWIM.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 15/05/2017 14:39

OP I'd hide this thread if I were you, it would make me fuming! People have every right to leave their door unlocked without people barging in!

PuppyMonkey · 15/05/2017 14:42

honestly people just lock your front doors Sad

Fruitcocktail6 · 15/05/2017 14:43

But why leave your door unlocked, if not for someone to come in?

Tiptoethr0ughthetulips · 15/05/2017 14:44

The delivery driver was U for trying your door, if he'd done that at my house my dog would have been on him like a rat up a drainpipe. He was very rude. Although it's safer to lock your door, you are completely within your rights to choose not to.xx

OsmosisJones · 15/05/2017 14:45

This is one of those threads where I seem to live in a parallel universe to people on this site.

I never lock my front door when im at home during the day. Nor does anyone I know, that I've noticed. It has literally never occurred to me. I can see the front door from my living room.

What I cannot get my head around, however, are the number of people saying "lock your door if you don't want people to walk in"....um, what?! It is NOT OK for someone to try your front door, locked or unlocked. What the actual fuck?!

I

LOL, our door is always unlocked during the day (we live in Central Scotland). However, I lived in London for @ 20 years and the door was always locked. It took me ages to get back out of the habit when I came home.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 15/05/2017 14:46

My front door is only locked when I go to bed (or go out). A lot of the time it's wide open, I like it open. I have no problem with the postie or delivery guys putting parcels on the table next to the door if it's open. If it's closed they have no right to open it. Closed is closed. Knock & wait.

BoredandConfused · 15/05/2017 14:46

I've just spent five minutes writing a post, justifying the fact that my door is unlocked then deleted it because that wasn't the point of my thread. My door was unlocked, it's still unlocked.

I am surprised that people think it's okay to attempt to enter a stranger's property uninvited because they have can and that that has become the crux of the thread! Still I posted in AIBU and if I do that I should expect to be told I am!

cordeliavorkosigan · 15/05/2017 14:46

he should not have opened the door.
what was he going to do: leave it there with you not in, if you weren't in? and if you were in, surely he knew it was off to try the door since he closed it when he saw you.
agree though, since there are people out there (including this guy!) who will walk in - best to lock it. get one of the locks that automatically locks when closed (then remember not to get locked out yourself!)
