Just wrong!

Quite, squoosh.

squoosh · 13/05/2017 00:56

Mee-er. It's grotesque.

Grotesque seems a tad dramatic.

FrenchDucksSayCoinCoin · 13/05/2017 00:56

This thread is ridiculous. If it were 'oh, those annoying Geordies with their accents' or almost any other accent it would be rightly shot down in flames.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/05/2017 00:58

Pronunciation is one thing, but aluminium really is officially spelled this way. If I've got to put up with having to write 'sulfur' then I can surely object to 'aluminum' Grin

SenecaFalls · 13/05/2017 01:01

Yes, MN is a very non-rhotic-centric place. Next thing you know someone will complain about us rhotic speakers pronouncing all those "r's."

Dogivemeabreak · 13/05/2017 01:03

Do you really think anybody over there gives a rats ass what you think.

TheShoeLady · 13/05/2017 01:05

My DP is British but has been working in the USA a lot lately. When he says "anyways", "y'all" or "pissed" (meaning angry not drunk) it makes me want to poke him in the eye with a Butterfinger. If he loses the ability to pronounce mirror I will have to LTB.

AntigoneJones · 13/05/2017 01:07

who cares if Americans say mee er for mirror or whore for horror - or indeed parster for pasta.
It is their language as well u know, and moaning about a different version of our international language just sounds provincial and petty.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/05/2017 01:07

A rat's arse, surely?Grin

soapboxqueen · 13/05/2017 01:08

Squirrel

Well obviously! Grin It's not exactly a serious discussion is it?

Good grief. Some people have obviously left their sense of humour at the door on what is very, very clearly a light hearted thread.

Paninotogo · 13/05/2017 01:08

Yeah, Brits can't seem to say taco, Oreo, or jalapeño correctly.

Rinceoir · 13/05/2017 01:09

As an Irish person in London I find the non-pronunciation of the letter "r" in words very odd. Especially as I have an "r" in the middle of my name meaning it is never pronounced properly here. Also other small differences like "gen-u-in" instead of "gen-u-(w)ine" are strange. It's a different dialect, nobody is wrong!

AntigoneJones · 13/05/2017 01:11

Panin. could you explain where we are going wrong please?
How should I say 'oreo'?

PaperdollCartoon · 13/05/2017 01:12

80sMum Shock that it's truly horryfing. In what accent is been ever prounced 'bin'?! I'd have corrected the teacher.

wildcoffeeandbeans · 13/05/2017 01:12

I'll admit our pronunciation of "jaguar" (jag-wire) is a bit odd.

AntigoneJones · 13/05/2017 01:12

oh yes Rinceoir, there are no R's in London, Once a Spanish student complained about my slight London accent and told the boss I didn't speak English properly...Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 13/05/2017 01:15

In what accent is been ever prounced 'bin'?!

Not uncommon in the northern UK as well as US, TBH.

wildcoffeeandbeans · 13/05/2017 01:15

"Bin" instead of "been" is definitely regional in the US (as are any of these examples, really).

Taco = tah-ko, not tack-oh
Jalapeño = hah-lah-peh-nyo
Oreo = Ohr-ee-yo

AntigoneJones · 13/05/2017 01:18

'bin' instead of been and 'sin' instead of seen is pure Brighton.

FrenchDucksSayCoinCoin · 13/05/2017 01:19

I'm sorry for missing the lightheartedness, I read it as 'bloody Americans'. Clearly past my bedtime which I intend to rectify forthwith.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/05/2017 01:21

I've never heard taco or oreo pronounced any other way. ConfusedJalapeño I'll admit to sounding more like halapeno, but that is a properly foreign word, not the 'two nations divided' thing.

SenecaFalls · 13/05/2017 01:22

Y'all also need to learn how to pronounce "pecan."

wildcoffeeandbeans · 13/05/2017 01:23

The worst thing is when you're reading your kid a British rhyming book but your accent means the words don't rhyme. Sad

AntigoneJones · 13/05/2017 01:23

not pee - k'n?
