Just wrong!

I live in the US and it drives me crazy - but even worse is how they butcher the French language - cordon-bloo, cross-ant #shudder

realhousewife23 · 13/05/2017 04:00

but still say ha-la-pen-yo instead of hah-la-pen-yo

How are they different?

mathanxiety · 13/05/2017 04:22

American accents. Knock yourselves out.

RobinHumphries · 13/05/2017 06:24

For all those taking offence, these threads show up regularly, usually in a light hearted way showing regional differences in the UK.

As for that list on page one, I read down it and got all the words to rhyme but I would say I've bin (been) out to the car to fetch.... or I've sin (seen) the funny bird...... and you don't want to know how I murder "out" at times.

I hate the way sometimes is occasionally said in American films, they add a h so it's shometimes

BasketOfDeplorables · 13/05/2017 07:16

Melting never speak to a chef - 'kitchen french' will be the end of you!

Taco should have a short "a" sound. The long "a" sound was created by the Americans when tacos were introduced into Tex-Mex cuisine.

LucyLocketLostIt · 13/05/2017 08:07

I'd just like to add 'route' to this list.

Oddly pronounced 'rowt' in America.

CaoNiMartacus · 13/05/2017 08:10

My three best friends are Texan, and they say "lilac" as "lie-LACK". Always perplexes me. (The reason it comes up so much is that one of them is a gardener/florist!)

mathanxiety · 13/05/2017 08:11

It is pronounced tokko in Mexican Spanish. This is rendered as tahco in American English, and it is closer to the Spanish than tacko with the flat A.

SuperBeagle · 13/05/2017 08:14

Only bogans say tackos here. The same type that pronounce nachos with a short a "natch-oss". Always an "oss" sound at the end and not an "ohs" sound.

WinchestersInATardis · 13/05/2017 08:19

As a non-Brit, I've always been amused by the British pronunciation of 'mayor'.
I always pronounced it as 'may-or' but in a lot of the UK it's 'mare'.
Now I can't hear it here without an accompanying whinnying in the back of my head.

soapboxqueen · 13/05/2017 08:21

Some people need to chill out. Ribbing other dialects or accents is fairly common. It happens within the UK aswell other English speaking countries. It's a function of the fact that we do speak the same language but then occasionally one word will be different and it sticks in the brain. American English gets more attention because it is pumped into our homes on a daily basis, no conspiracy of hatred.

badgersnotincluded · 13/05/2017 08:23

Congradoolations

MsHooliesCardigan · 13/05/2017 08:23

The worst one I ever heard was oregano pronounced as uh-RAY-guh-no. I'm sorry but that is just wrong.

Ratatatouille · 13/05/2017 08:24

And you need to ask yourself, before making such a statement/post, if you were to substitute "Indian" or "Pakistani" for "American", would what you are saying be crass and offensive?

Well fucking obviously it would because that would be taking the piss out of a non native English speaker when they are speaking their second language and is not in any way comparable to what is going on here. Nobody is being nasty here, it's all just light-hearted fun. Of course we know that there are different accents in America FFS. A lot of us have even been there (shock!).

If you said "Woryer" to me in my state in America, I would assume you were a bricklayer, plumber, or similar

Is this you trying to say that only stupid people would pronounce it that way and trying to list of some professions that you think are solely for stupid working class people? Do you understand the irony in the fact that you are calling other participants in a jokey thread judgemental and narrow minded whilst making this ridiculously offensive generalisation?

squoosh · 13/05/2017 08:27

Good grief. Some people have obviously left their sense of humour at the door on what is very, very clearly a light hearted thread.

These 'light hearted' threads are only ever about Americans though aren't they?

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 13/05/2017 08:28

was talking about dog breeds with an Aussie friend, and it took me a moment to work out what a "saint berNAHrd" was as I'd never come across it other than "sintBERnard".

DD informed me that the scientific community had agreed to ditch the ph in sulpher in return for aluminium being aluminium, not sure how true that is though.

foundaspottysock · 13/05/2017 08:41

This reminds me of our trip to Disneys Animal Kingdom. There was a quiz as you went round and one of my kids got chosen to answer a question.

The answer was Jaguar, dd must have said it five times and the poor cast member looked really perplexed as dd just kept saying it the same.

Turns out it's said Jag - wa, someone kindly stepped forward to translate Grin

MissionItsPossible · 13/05/2017 08:44

Haven't read through the whole thread but another vote here for mirror/mee-er. It really, really (and I am ready to accept unreasonably) really gets on my fucking nerves!!

SuperBeagle · 13/05/2017 08:46

MyVisions

This has crossed my mind before! We do pronounce it "Saint BerNARD", but the name Bernard is pronounced BER-nard here... Hmm

bbcessex · 13/05/2017 08:50

I work with lots of American colleagues (and other nationalities too).
I love the differences.

My firm is US owned so I'm very used to a 'zee' in everything 😎

bbcessex · 13/05/2017 08:51

It's actually quite hard to say mirror in an American accent...

bbcessex · 13/05/2017 08:56

Omg... previous poster has a massive point..

Mirr-or. = meet
May-or = mate

WE DO IT TOO.... arghhgg!!

Wonder if Momsnet US has a thread.... "I Hate the way those brits can't say Mayor'.... !!

For all those who hate the

bbcessex · 13/05/2017 08:57

Darn it..

May-or = Mare

That makes more sense!
