Am I being tight/ greedy?

I ordered sourdough toast with avocado, tofu and plantain at my local cafe for lunch today. I was hungry. The dish was 2 slices of sourdough toast; 1 slice with avocado, 1 slice naked no butter, 2 small strips of tofu and 2 small slices of plantain with about 5 spinach leaves. I questioned the portion size as it seemed a bit, well, mean. My friend said it was about right but I was expecting avo on both slices and more than 2 slices of plantain for £4.95.

AIBU or AIB greedy?

Am I being tight/ greedy?

I think it's ok price wise but not very appetizing. It looks like a starter. If it's a main then it's very small but cheap.

WhisperingLoudly · 12/05/2017 19:42

You're not being greedy for wanting more but if you were served more 14.95 would be more the mark

phoenix1973 · 12/05/2017 19:49

Not impressed.

SoftSheen · 12/05/2017 19:52

It seems like a reasonable quantity of food for the price. However, the presentation isn't great and I find the combination of ingredients a bit odd. The toast shouldn't be served dry either- should have either some butter or a drizzle of olive oil.

PersianCatLady · 12/05/2017 20:16

Plantain are not expensive round my way. 3 for £1.00 @ my local grocer
I can't believe that you think that is relevant.

Pizzas are only a couple of quid in the Co-Op but at Pizza Hut they are more like £12.

I only mentioned the price of the plantain because someone upthread had mentioned they were expensive. I think that I was probably being a bit greedy tbh, but it is strange to serve a dry bit of toast. I still think they should have had more plantain....

Avocados are very expensive right now, prices are up globally so the price seems about right. Your sourdough toast looks under toasted to me though!

Sprogletsmuvva · 12/05/2017 20:25

I live in a rough but gentrifying area in London.

Not an area with a large hospital on a hill, no Tube service, and a block of flats that had a fire some years ago, perchance?

Only on seeing the picture, I was immediately reminded of my area, which is a strange mixture of the hipster ("bottle shops" with overpriced "artisan beer"), a few WC indigene gaffs (pubs and greasy spoons) and efnic cafes/restaurants. If you want a good feed at a reasonable price, you go to one of the latter two categories.

Feebeela · 12/05/2017 20:26

Hmmm, was it nice? It wasn't too bad. It is a lovely local cafe which is offering something healthy and decent at the end of my road. I still want to keep on going but I'll chose more wisely next time! I wanted a sense of either my greed (I do like my food!) or tightness (possible...)

You are greedy.

runloganrun101 · 12/05/2017 20:33

Why do you need butter with all that avocado?

PhyllisNights · 12/05/2017 20:35

You are being tight and greedy. That is standard when you're dining out.

TheDowagerCuntess · 12/05/2017 20:46

£4.95 is incredibly cheap.

I'd rather pay more, and at least get some avo on the second slice of bread. Confused

No need for butter.

myoriginal3 · 12/05/2017 21:01

I've no idea what plaintain is either but I know that it looks like a bruised banana and Africans fry it.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 12/05/2017 21:07

Not a good time to mention that £5 buys you a large plate of roast dinner with a meat and 3 veg in our favourite greasy spoon cafe...

ahhhhhwoof · 13/05/2017 17:46

In Brighton you'd pay about £7 for that easily

Clandestino · 13/05/2017 17:52

Avocado and sourdough are expensive ingredients.

Not sure which part of the Milky Way you inhabitate but here in Ireland a big loaf of the most delicious sourdough bread which smells and tastes so nice that people have been known to eat a half iat once is 2 euro in my local bakery. They also sell lblueberry muffins with lemon curd bigger than a builder's fist, fluffy and delicious for 1.50. The expensiveness of sourdough bread is urban legend well fed by all those hipstersy artisan bakeries which charge twice for the name.

littlefurrysheep · 13/05/2017 17:53

It's not much food but 4.95 is not much money ¯\(ツ)/¯

Pinkheart5917 · 13/05/2017 17:56

For £4.95 in a cafe I wouldn't expect a bigger portion than that

peri89 · 13/05/2017 18:01

I really think that's good for a fiver. Would easily pay at least £7 for that where I am... at least.

expatinscotland · 13/05/2017 18:02

'Not sure which part of the Milky Way you inhabitate but here in Ireland a big loaf of the most delicious sourdough bread which smells and tastes so nice that people have been known to eat a half iat once is 2 euro in my local bakery.'

Um, the key is in my name. I'm in Scotland, last I checked, it's a real fucking country. We use the pound here, and a loaf of sourdough from a supermarket is about £1.50, but again, this is a cafe in London the OP is patronising, with associated overheads. Imagine that?

NeedsAsockamnesty · 13/05/2017 18:11

A cafe local to me does something quite like that only you get both slices spread with avacardo and a dish of plantain and chips/crisps or side salad for £5.50.

I'm in a fairly affluent area

Serialweightwatcher · 13/05/2017 18:20

I would definitely expect a bigger portion, especially of what constitutes bread and green stuff ... not my taste at all and I do think these 'trendy' type cafes take the mick though
