AIBU to wear a dress over leggings for disneyland?

QueenOfTheSkies · 10/05/2017 13:13

Basically I'm overweight (currently a size 22) and heading to disneyland with the DC in the summer. It will be hot, we will be walking lots and obviously climbing on and off rides.

my plan was to wear leggings (thick, proper, cant see through them leggings) and a just above knee length dress over the top - this will be comfy and i thought would mean that i could climb on and off rides etc not worrying what the skirt of the dress does as i have leggings on underneath.

DH has just said that surely it will still look like my dress has blown up and i'm showing my arse off to everyone when getting on and off rides.

so who is right? Am I techincally wearing a long top (dress) over leggings (as trousers) so no issue if you can see my legging-covered arse/crotch getting on and off rides. or is DH right that it will look like a dress and tights and therefore indecent!

at my size leggings without a dress for wandering around would look awful and i will be too hot in jeans and obviously longer skirts/dresses wouldnt be practical. HELP please!!

BTW, don't feel self conscious as there will be lots of people people much bigger than you at Disneyland!

PeanutButterBunny · 10/05/2017 18:14

Last time I went to Disneyland I wore leggings and bad mistake. I was boiling! Trust me, op, people are too busy to have fun they won't care what you wear or even if you flash anything, so wear whatever is comfortable and enjoy yourself!

Cornishware · 10/05/2017 18:24

We went to Disney world last year and melted, loved it but melted. I wouldn't wear leggings, there are all shapes and sizes and it really isn't a Judgey place. I wore a lot of dresses, people have more interesting things to look at than me pants! If you are going to Paris then your outfit sounds a lot more sensible.

froyotogo · 10/05/2017 18:25

I would wear thin 3/4 leggings with a long cotton dress/top.

LambChopsMcGee · 10/05/2017 18:26

Could you wear knee length leggings? i wore them under dresses when i was pregnant. Got them at Primark, a cottony fabric with elastane, not too warm. Or even bike shorts or exercise capris?

You want to be comfortable, in terms of clothes, temperature and how you feel in the outfit. Sounds like a fine general plan to me and i thunk it is a nice look.

Sounds like a fun trip. Hope you find the perfect outfit.

BaldricksTrousers · 10/05/2017 19:09

When I was bigger and went to Disneyland in California in August (incredibly hot), I wore a lightweight cotton maxi skirt and a vest top. If in the USA there will always be bigger people than you wearing less clothes, don't ever feel bad and just dress for the heat.

Heifer · 10/05/2017 19:47

I'm a size 22 and would wear a teeshirt or short sleeve blouse (long enough to cover my stomach) and 3/4 or full length linen trousers. Evans sell them every year in different colours. They look fine. They are lose at the bottom so don't get stuck on the calves. I also would have a very thin long sleeved shirt/blouse with me in case I get sunburnt.

No way would I want to wear leggings in the heat (actually I don't ever wear leggings outside of the house but that is my personal choice). I wear jeans whenever I can as I find they hold my stomach in better ;-) but in the summer it's just too hot for jeans, hence the linen trews

CiderwithBuda · 11/05/2017 09:17

Can people not read the thread? There have been lots of posts and some updates from the OP. She is not going to Florida. She is going to PARIS. Might be hot. Might not.

I am a 22 too and have similar issues. I find leggings cooler and more comfortable than no leg wear or shorts too. Make sure they are cotton and think about getting white ones - much cooler than black. I have also suffered DLP in heat in May.

I would second wear what you are comfortable in, dress and leggings, Linen style trousers and loose top with anti chub Rub pants (they tend to be seamless which is also good). I also carry a flannel in a sealable bag so I can wet it before going into the loo cubicles and having a wash to refresh and cool myself if it is really too hot.

In terms of if you do get some rub I find some sudocreme overnight generally sorts it out unless its really bad.

HandbagCrab · 11/05/2017 09:29

It rained a lot last summer :)

Only ride I can think of that you straddle is the carousel, I think you'd have to go out of your way to flash your arse at someone, it won't happen naturally.

I'll be wearing leggings and dresses this summer there. And taking a brolly as buying one there was 50 euros!

RB68 · 11/05/2017 09:31

Heifer where do you get your jeans from - I live in M&S Black trousers or Navy Linens in the summer

RhiWrites · 11/05/2017 09:52

How about drawstring cotton trousers? You can get an nice relaxed style that's Indonesian or Indian. Then a loose light top.

ShelaghTurner · 11/05/2017 10:15

I'm a 22 too on a good day with a big arse and legs and after years of sweating and fainting I spent last summer in tapered/harem trousers from Next and a long floaty vest (with the thicker straps, not spaghetti ones). I still hate the heat but it was so much better. I decided not to give a toss about getting my upper arms out and not one single person died from shock or disgust. In fact no one even looked at them from what I saw. The moral of the story is wear whatever the hell you're comfortable in. People are too busy worrying about themselves to care.

StarHeartDiamond · 12/05/2017 11:21

Shelagh - I see all shapes and sizes on the school run and all I ever notice is if someone is wearing a pretty print, or a great colour, or looks groomed, usually because I think "love that look, I want to try that". Otoh if someone doesn't look groomed or wearing something pretty then I don't notice negatively, it just doesn't catch my eye. Size doesn't come into it.

Code42 · 12/05/2017 11:36

OP I think you said your waist is small compared to your thighs /bum?

Evans pear shape cut is your friend! They've got several styles of linen trousers cut this way, and the waist fits as normal so that you don't end up with it hanging off your hips and rubbing your inner thighs. You'll probably need a size or two smaller than your normal trouser size, but order online and return or go into store.

MissShittyBennet · 12/05/2017 11:41

The air will be like soup, so I think my first choice would be looser trousers. Harem pants perhaps, or linen?

LadyPW · 12/05/2017 12:21

Nobody will notice let alone care. As long as you're wearing clothes you'll be fine! If you just wear a dress and occasionally flash a bit of thigh getting on / off it'll be forgotten by anyone who does spot it within 10 seconds. Everyone is more bothered by either getting on or off themselves or rushing to beat the queues to the next ride.

llangennith · 12/05/2017 12:41

I haven't RTFT so it may have been mentioned but you'll find a lot of people at Disneyland larger than you. I'm a size 22 and when I've been there I wore knee length shorts and loose sleeveless tops same as everyone else, including the overweight.
If you're uncertain then take your leggings but please make sure you have shorts and cool tops with you too because after the first day you'll realise you've no need to hide your body.

QueenOfTheSkies · 12/05/2017 13:20

So some deliveries have arrived.

i have a pair of patterned palazzo trousers which are actually lovely and with a long length t-shirt over the top look quite good. little concerned the material isnt thick enough to prevent chub rub though so may test them out on a hot day. they are really nice so will keep them for normal summer wear anyway.

some dresses for over leggings have been a total bust. one set are too sheer so you can see straight through and so no good. one is lovely, looks really good but it is probably too thick for summer wear which is a shame.

i have discovered that 'cold shoulder' shirts are in fashion so have ordered some of those - cool for the arms without bingo wings flapping unchecked - cant go wrong surely! they should arrive tomorrow.

Just waiting for some linen and cotton trousers, both cropped and long to try - maybe later today or tomorrow i think.

code42 i will look at evans as yes i usually find to get big enough to fit my thighs means the waist is masive and it falls down causing a rub. will look at their pear range! thank you!

If you wear your leggings, wear decent pants and then you can take the leggings off.

WanderingTrolley1 · 12/05/2017 13:28

Don't worry, OP. You will feel positively svelte over there!! You will be too hit in leggings.

Code42 · 12/05/2017 15:54

OP they've transformed my trouser wearing Grin (And it's always nice to have a smaller size on the label!) Have a lovely trip!

AlexaAmbidextra · 12/05/2017 18:16

Queen. Don't worry what you will look like for one minute. Believe me, at a mere size 22 you will look slender to many you will see at Disney.

Choccywoccyhooha · 12/05/2017 18:26

I knowyou've already ordered some things to try on, but I really recommend jumpsuits. All the comfort of a dress, but no knicker flashing. Asos Curve have quite a few in.

Fennecfoxmummy · 12/05/2017 18:35

Sorry I haven't had time to RTFT but I'm around the same clothing size as you and I'd wear linen pants or patterned summer pants for this! Enjoy your trip op
