AIBU to wear a dress over leggings for disneyland?

QueenOfTheSkies · 10/05/2017 13:13

Basically I'm overweight (currently a size 22) and heading to disneyland with the DC in the summer. It will be hot, we will be walking lots and obviously climbing on and off rides.

my plan was to wear leggings (thick, proper, cant see through them leggings) and a just above knee length dress over the top - this will be comfy and i thought would mean that i could climb on and off rides etc not worrying what the skirt of the dress does as i have leggings on underneath.

DH has just said that surely it will still look like my dress has blown up and i'm showing my arse off to everyone when getting on and off rides.

so who is right? Am I techincally wearing a long top (dress) over leggings (as trousers) so no issue if you can see my legging-covered arse/crotch getting on and off rides. or is DH right that it will look like a dress and tights and therefore indecent!

at my size leggings without a dress for wandering around would look awful and i will be too hot in jeans and obviously longer skirts/dresses wouldnt be practical. HELP please!!

Sounds fine to me as it is exactly what I am wearing today!

BeyondThePage · 10/05/2017 14:26

I'm a size 20 and have done both Disneyworld Florida and Disneyland Paris. I am allergic to suncream, so wear a pair of linen/cotton mix trousers/palazzo pants or 3/4 length capri pants, along with a T shirt and open loose linen overshirt - keeps me cool and out of the sun - and I wear boxers under (for chub-rub prevention)

BenjaminLinus · 10/05/2017 14:31

I'm a size (or two) bigger than you and have found that the long shorts that finish just below the knee - is it capri length? - cover plenty and are practical, cooler and more flattering than a cropped trouser. In fact I'm wearing some now.

chocatoo · 10/05/2017 14:33

wide flappy full length cotton or linen trousers and a loose fitting long top (again cotton) would be my suggestion, maybe a little vest top under so you can strip down further if it's boiling...but anything goes at Disney!

HappyFlappy · 10/05/2017 14:38

I love to see leggings with a knee- or mid-thigh-length dress - it looks casual but smart at the same time - not sloppy.

Go for it - you'll look lovely!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 10/05/2017 14:39

OP get a very glam and comfy maxi dress. leggings TOO HOT

Giddyaunt18 · 10/05/2017 14:43

It's totally fine!

Giddyaunt18 · 10/05/2017 14:45

How about cotton harem pants? Loose, comfy and modesty saving. Next do some called jersey tapered trousers. They are lightweight.

Here they are, I love them.

We did Paris last year and I wore leggings and dresses ALL the time. Since having my 2 kids, I can't wear jeans as my c section scar is too tender so it's always dresses, ankle length leggings and either flip flops, trainers or dolly shoes!

Simplybe have some lovely dresses with short sleeves (as I hate my arms too!) and they were ideal x

dollydaydream114 · 10/05/2017 14:53

I did a US road trip from DC to Florida at the height of summer and I wore dresses over cropped/Capri length leggings a lot on that trip. Comfy for travel and mooching about I didn't get hot, plus I didn't get heat rash like I do with bare legs.

I'm not sure what your DH is on about to be honest; dresses or tunic tops over leggings is a really normal, everyday thing for women to wear!

VerySadInside · 10/05/2017 14:59

Summer is still quite a way off, could you start a healthy diet plan?

BexleyRae · 10/05/2017 15:00

I don't think you really need to worry too much about climbing in and out of the rides. If you can get in and out of a car with your modesty intact in a knee length dress then you will be fine getting onto on off the rides

Clandestino · 10/05/2017 15:03

I hate shorts so I like wearing leggins and long hoodies. I bought few leggins from H&M and Diesel that I love wearing and see no reason to be ashamed of it.
Not good for work even though we are allowed to wear casual wear including jeans but in my free time this is what you see me wearing.
Can't see an issue of your DH. It's a perfectly wearable combo.

Redhead17 · 10/05/2017 15:04

I always wear dresses with leggings but if I have certain length dresses then I bust out what I call the lance armstrongs, Bridget jones meets cycling shorts stop the old thigh rub! And also wear what the hell youre comfy in. I am a size 22 and am off to menorca soon I have various outfits some with leggings some not, tankinis etc don't worry about the others I have a lot of tattoos so that tends to steer eyeballs another way Grin

GrimmDays · 10/05/2017 15:11

I wore dress and leggings at Disney in Florida some days. I felt more comfortable as I burn easily. All the queues are indoors or have shelters and aircon so it's not as much outdoor as you may think.

Honestly op no one will even bat an eyelid. Disney is packed with people of all shapes and sizes.

CricketRuntAndRashers · 10/05/2017 15:23

Tbh, I also think that linnen trousers and a nice loose top would be more comfortable. But then again, I'm quite heat sensitive (very weird, seeing as I'm actually part Italian...). and the mere thought of wearing leggins on a hot summer day makes me cringe.

But honestly, your DH should shut up. Wear whatever makes you comfortable.

I really like the outdoor/travel range of thin trousers with zip off shorts for holidays paired with a nice top. They pack to nothing, don't crease, dry really fast and even if you don't zip off the shorts (you can get some with capri length zip off too) at least you have the option to do so (good for an impromptu paddle in a kiddies waterproof etc.
However if you are most comfortable in leggings and a dress then wear that and enjoy (perhaps not too floaty a dress so it doesn't fly) Have a fab time

CiderwithBuda · 10/05/2017 16:37

Boopsy- yes I see that comment on here a lot. And I have avoided linen trousers for the last couple of years because of it. No more! I've decided I cant be arsed worrying what people, think. I'm 53 and I really like loose linen trousers (not cropped though!) with a nice top. So I will be buying a couple of pairs this year.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 10/05/2017 16:39

I live in loose linen trousers. I think the style and cut is important and how you wear them though.

QueenOfTheSkies · 10/05/2017 17:53

thank you everyone. i have now ordered a selection of dresses, leggings, tunics, wide leg palazzo style trousers, linen cropped trousers and cotton tops to try!

i'm hoping the palazzos will work as they seem like they would be cooler than leggings!

i have tried every type of chub rub cream and lotion, none work at all.

this is all about trying to find the balance of being comfy from the heat, being comfy in the look and style of clothes im in and not having to worry abut reajusting clothes when im there - i want to just focus on having fun with the DC.

last time we went it was over 30 degrees but i was a lot smaller then so had more options on outfits!!

thanks for all the suggestions!

Your outfit sounds very sensible and respectable. Only thing is you might be too hot in leggings maybe you could try some thin cotton trousers?
