AIBU to wear a dress over leggings for disneyland?

Basically I'm overweight (currently a size 22) and heading to disneyland with the DC in the summer. It will be hot, we will be walking lots and obviously climbing on and off rides.

my plan was to wear leggings (thick, proper, cant see through them leggings) and a just above knee length dress over the top - this will be comfy and i thought would mean that i could climb on and off rides etc not worrying what the skirt of the dress does as i have leggings on underneath.

DH has just said that surely it will still look like my dress has blown up and i'm showing my arse off to everyone when getting on and off rides.

so who is right? Am I techincally wearing a long top (dress) over leggings (as trousers) so no issue if you can see my legging-covered arse/crotch getting on and off rides. or is DH right that it will look like a dress and tights and therefore indecent!

at my size leggings without a dress for wandering around would look awful and i will be too hot in jeans and obviously longer skirts/dresses wouldnt be practical. HELP please!!

If you are going to Disney in Florida it will be really humid in the summer and so I'd think you will be way too it in leggings. Plus if they are dark in colour they'll be even hotter with the sun shining on them. Can you wear cycling shorts under a floaty dress if you don't like the shorts and t-shirt look, as then at least your legs will get some air. It really is very hot and airless in the parks. It will be fabulous, though. I love Disney World!

YellowCrocus · 10/05/2017 13:28

I wear this pretty much every day. Your DH is being a banana.

EddieHitler · 10/05/2017 13:29

Wear them, they sound like the practical choice for a theme park. I wear short dresses over leggings and have never considered anyone would think they were tights.

As PP said, maybe try them out for comfort on a warm day before you go, just in case.

QueenOfTheSkies · 10/05/2017 13:29

sorry, yes its paris not florida! i dont handle heat well so even paris in the summer is mostly too hot for me!!

will have a look for some cropped linen ones and some longer length tops. I have real self esteem issues, especially at the size i am now, and dont want the holliday spoiled by being uncomfy - either because of the wrong clothes or by feeling people are looking/laughing at me.

Well, whatever you decide to wear, there is no need to be worrying about 'protecting your modesty'. There are no big steps down from any rides really.

RoganJosh · 10/05/2017 13:30

Would a maxi dress work? I find the waistband makes me hotter in a skirt.

Strikhedonia · 10/05/2017 13:33

I hate leggings as trousers ( LEGGINGS ARE NOT TROUSERS ) but under a dress like yours is what they were designed for. You will be completely fine!

You will have a much better time in Disney if you are comfortable. It's a long day, there's a lot of walking, you don't want to be struggling with your clothes. Your outfit sounds perfect. If your dress does come up a bit when you are climbing up or down.. well that's what your leggings are for. Enjoy your trip Smile

i think linen trousers woudl be a better idea if its warm... I often do the legging/dress thing but last summer on holiday it was too hot ..

linen/cotton mix is slightly less crumpled usually but I got a cheap pair from Tesco last summer that were fine (hate ironing)

also have a pair from M&S in a sort of denimy blue (last summer) and they seemed slightly more structured fabric so cooler...if you dont want to pay boden prices

PastaOfMuppets · 10/05/2017 13:35

Disneyland is in LA, Disneyworld is in Orlando. Or Euro Disney in Paris.
OP, leggings under a dress will stop sweaty thigh rub chafing (I get it bad and it makes family days out painful), but might get very warm.
No one will bat an eyelid what you wear, unless you look like you feel uncomfortable or self conscious. And if you're going to be in the US, even more so - plenty of us curvies over there.
Have fun!

redjoker · 10/05/2017 13:36

Leggings sound ideal to me, even if they are thick ones its way better than stiff shorts , i cannot deal with anything button up over my belly, i live in jeggings!

and if in doubt... lanacane

LuxuryWoman2017 · 10/05/2017 13:36

OP people won't be looking at you I promise, you'll be too busy to care anyway.

I have noticed cargo/combat style trousers are back in fashion this year and they are very comfy. Linen trousers can look fab on a more generous figure teamed with floaty v neck tops (the almost kaftan style again)
Take a look online at the shops within your budget (Sainsbury is good for holiday wear) and get some inspiration from the models.

We're going to NYC for a week in June and expect it to be roasting. I'm a size 14/16 and have every intention of wearing leggings with dresses and sandals while we're there. It's all fine and well saying "just wear shorts!" but I despise my legs and would feel horribly self conscious in anything shorter than below the knee. I tried some cropped jeans but they were horribly unstylish Blush

PastaOfMuppets · 10/05/2017 13:37

Oops, cross post, Paris makes more sense if you're in the UK!

I think you're very ahead of the curve. Isn't this supposed to be very in this year? Try a jumpsuit?
Sainsburys (I know) have lovely ones.

runloganrun101 · 10/05/2017 13:37

Get a nice pair of wide leg linen trousers from Yours. Much comfier than leggins on a hot day.

Strikhedonia · 10/05/2017 13:38

In a place like Disney, I would start by deciding on my shoes, and go for something practical from there. Seriously, so much walking..Grin

diddl · 10/05/2017 13:39

I think that if you are wearing them as tights it's OK to go for thinner ones tbh.

NightWanderer · 10/05/2017 13:41

Personally I wouldn't wear a dress or skirt without something underneath because my thighs rub together and it's very painful. I think linen trousers under a cotton tunic top would be nice too. Sort of like a salwar kameez.

QueenOfTheSkies · 10/05/2017 13:43

strikehedonia i have my most comfortable sandals ready and waiting! i can walk all day in those!

will look at some wide leg linen ones, that sounds like it may be a good option too!

redjoker i agree, i hate my stomach feeling constricted in the heat!

I do that in summer anyway, even if not going to Disneyland.
Not an issue at all IMO and certainly not idea that you are showing everything when you up and down the rides, est ifbthe colour of your leggings isn't nude or skin colour iyswim.

Go with it. It will be much more confortable for you anyway. It's like wearing trousers with a long top over them.

ADayGivingMeHope · 10/05/2017 13:43

I say just wear what is comfortable and sod what the rest of the world thinks... they're too busy having fun with their own families anyway to care what your wearing!

runloganrun101 · 10/05/2017 13:44

Link to the wide leg linens -they do different colours

This is basically my summer wardrobe (and winter with jumper dresses!) I'm like you, too big on the thighs etc to wear shorts, I look hideous in them and completely out of proportion. I have lots of summer dresses, mostly knee length or even slightly above that I wear leggings with. I tend to go for three quarter length leggings though so it looks like it's meant to be part of the outfit but not always. Sometimes I get the lace trimmed ones. I wear them under my denim skirt as well.

Yes it can get a bit hot but it's still more comfortable than chub rub. I wouldn't look twice at you, I'd just think it was a nice outfit and move on.

BluePeppers · 10/05/2017 13:44

YY night that's why I'm wearing leggings or short leggings in summer.

2014newme · 10/05/2017 13:45

@pastamuppets
Euro Disney changed its name to disneyland Paris about 20 years ago.
