AIBU to wear a dress over leggings for disneyland?

QueenOfTheSkies · 10/05/2017 13:13

Basically I'm overweight (currently a size 22) and heading to disneyland with the DC in the summer. It will be hot, we will be walking lots and obviously climbing on and off rides.

my plan was to wear leggings (thick, proper, cant see through them leggings) and a just above knee length dress over the top - this will be comfy and i thought would mean that i could climb on and off rides etc not worrying what the skirt of the dress does as i have leggings on underneath.

DH has just said that surely it will still look like my dress has blown up and i'm showing my arse off to everyone when getting on and off rides.

so who is right? Am I techincally wearing a long top (dress) over leggings (as trousers) so no issue if you can see my legging-covered arse/crotch getting on and off rides. or is DH right that it will look like a dress and tights and therefore indecent!

at my size leggings without a dress for wandering around would look awful and i will be too hot in jeans and obviously longer skirts/dresses wouldnt be practical. HELP please!!

Honestly don't be uncomfortable; it's not worth it. I don't own anything with a waist button really, Im a size 12 but used to be a size 16 and i just cannot cope with the feeling of tightness. a mental block im sure

I wear those elasticated 'hareem' trousers. I have some posh black ones from topshop. some everyday black ones from Peacocks and an elephant pair from Thailand (you can get them in hippy shops and on market stalls) they are a godsend!

redjoker · 10/05/2017 13:48

Something like this and a nice top?

@2014 given that I automatically still think it's the 90s, that makes sense ...

I wouldn't wear a long skirt or a dress. Some rides have things which go between your legs and evern on those that don't you'll find yourself having to hitch the skirt up to climb on and off ride vehicles.

Also DLP might not be hot in August, its in northern France so the climate isn't that much different to southern England.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/05/2017 13:51

Personally I wouldn't even think of leggings if it's Florida as you'll simply melt, so how about a long and full Indian style skirt in a thin cotton (elasticated waist of course)? They hide a multitude of sins and won't get in the way as you can tuck the fullness under your bum if necessary Wink

And perhaps a small tin of talc to tuck in your handbag if you're worried about chafing? Ladies living in the hot, sticky heat of Thailand use this all the time, and believe me it works

StarHeartDiamond · 10/05/2017 13:53

That's fine and very appropriate! Have you checked the weather in case it's too hot for leggings then? If so, second linen trousers with loose top.

Really don't like the leggings hate, except when worn in place of trousers with knickers clearly visible through.

PickAChew · 10/05/2017 13:53

I somehow doubt you'll be the only size 22 there.

I think you'd be more comfortable in loose trousers, though.leggings in summer are hot!

crochetmonkey · 10/05/2017 13:54

I'm your size and shape OP and we regularly go to Vegas in the summer- which is stupid hot. I find leggings and a dress way too hot, so I tend to go for really thin cotton trousers (there are loads of them at the moment in Primark/ Matalan/ George at Asda. The way they are cut means that often the size 20 or even 18 fits- and I wear a longer top with them. They are very breezy and currently in fashion- I have some nice printed ones and also plain ones so I can do printed and plain tops to mix and match.
I have plantar fascitis too and have Skechers Go Walk and Fit Flop trainers which are brilliant for all the walking.
Hope you have a fabulous time!

A quick check of weather records suggest Paris is generally between 20 and 25 degrees in July and August, and that's the actual city, DLP is outside the city so may even be a little cooler.

Itsjustaphase2016 · 10/05/2017 13:58

Hareem pants and loose vest with sandals? H&M do great hareems

MingeFog · 10/05/2017 13:58

Hi OP, my friend who was a similar size to yourself (and also went to Disneyland!) would wear cycling shorts under dresses. I also used the idea as I get chub rub too, and it works really well! I think I got a few pairs cheaply from Primani.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/05/2017 14:01

Ignore me - I've just seen that it's Paris rather than Florida Blush

Still think a full cotton skirt would be worth considering, though ...

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 10/05/2017 14:02

Your fashion choices sound great OP, comfy and practical.

I just wanted to say.... I am quite hefty of bum and thigh myself and to my horror & embarrassment found that there were some rides I couldn't comfortably fit on. Blush

SemiNormal · 10/05/2017 14:03

I would personally go for palazzo trousers, nice wide legs so perfect in the heat and often made in very lightweight material with elasticated waistbands in a variety of colours.

BeMorePanda · 10/05/2017 14:04

try this - it really works!

I'm sweaty size 20 and have been wearing dresses and skirts whenever I want using this - chafe free.

I do chafe to fuck without it though :(

OffRoader · 10/05/2017 14:06

I think a dress and leggings sounds fine!

I hate hareem pants, they look like pyjamas or lazing-around-the-house trousers to me.

littletwofeet · 10/05/2017 14:09

Linen trousers will get creased really quickly.

Jersey hareem pants are cool and comfortable if you get ones with an elasticated waist.

You can get shorts in loose jersey type material with an elasticated waist so not denim/chino style-they are loose fit over thighs and you won't have the problem of them not fitting if you have a small waist. Primark and h&m do them.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/05/2017 14:11

Loose, wide-leg linen trousers, with a floaty tunic top. This shape works well if you have a small waist as the width of the trousers allows for larger thighs. Much more comfortable than leggings in the heat.

Frecklesfrodo123 · 10/05/2017 14:13

We went to Disney world in Feb, I wore long midi dresses, kept me cool and covered me up well! Had no issues getting on/off rides.

I wore a shorter dress with leggings one day, was far too hot and felt uncomfortable.

Most of the rides are just stepping on/off so nothing would be on show. Space mountain, it's a small world and pirates of the Caribbean would require holding dress in place but still wouldn't show lots!

Have you thought about some loose wide leg trouser types? With a vest? Would keep you cool and comfortable

blackteasplease · 10/05/2017 14:14

I would go for cotton trousers too. They can be cooler than shorts in the right material and a light colour.

Littledidsheknow · 10/05/2017 14:17

Size 20 here! All my ideas have already been posted above, but I'll add my voice to the recommendations of:

Cropped, loose linen or cotton trousers - I live in them on holiday. Lots of them around.

A jumpsuit. I have a few, I love them! As nice as a dress but more practical.

Harem pants, but find some without the low crotch to avoid chub rub!

The dress with leggings combo you describe also sounds fine to me, though I do see your DHs point that people may regard the leggings as underwear.
Enjoy your holiday!

imjessie · 10/05/2017 14:22

How about a sleeveless dress ? Next do a lovely one which wood be ideal as it's floaty and vest at the top . Hang on .

Redpony1 · 10/05/2017 14:23

I'm a size 10/12 and i refuse to wear shorts or skirts, makes me feel uncomfortable.
I never find i am too hot in leggings so just try some things on & see how you feel :)

imjessie · 10/05/2017 14:24

This sort of thing , it can't be the only shop who sells them .. with under the knee leggings ( or roll your long ones up ) will allow air flow and having your arms out will always be cooler .
