Quick Straw Poll - do you all keep raw meat on a separate, lower, shelf than cooked meat in your fridge?

Dh thinks I'm being petty and gets annoyed when I ask him to put cooked meats on the cooked meats/cheese shelf in the fridge (eye level), and raw meat on the bottom shelf. It was something I learned in food hygiene years ago.

So, do you all keep your cooked and raw meat separate? Yes or no...

Yes. Basic food hygiene practice.

melj1213 · 06/05/2017 22:32

No.

I try to keep them separate but I have a tiny undercounter fridge with only two shelves and a drawer so if the still sealed package of raw chicken has to share space on the bottom shelf with the tupperware box of roast chicken leftovers because the top shelf is full of butter/cheese/yoghurts/miscellaneous fridge stuff, then so be it.

bumpertobumper · 06/05/2017 22:38

No.
Solid shelves so no dripping. And lots of packaging

magimedi · 06/05/2017 22:39

Yes. Bonkers if you don't.

TheShapeofYou · 06/05/2017 22:58

Sorry I disappeared! Forgot I started the thread Blush

Good to see most people agree with me. I'm not getting worked up about it, I'm just in the camp where it's automatic, so seems odd to me to plonk raw chicken or bacon on a high shelf with the packs of cooked ham/chicken. We have a fairly big fridge, and there's always enough room to separate them, so that's not why he does it.

We've lived together for 8 years now, and I've always said "would you mind..." and explained about keeping them separate, but he still insists on flouting the rule Hmm Grin

No. Glass shelves. Sealed packets.

If you put raw meat on the bottom shelf surely it would drip into the veg box underneath?

Iwannasnack · 06/05/2017 23:15

Yes but another DH who doesn't really get it. Also agree that now everything is vac packed from supermarkets and fridge shelves are solid it's probably not so important.

TheShapeofYou · 06/05/2017 23:20

Ok, I'll stop moaning about it then. Not giving up with moaning about him leaving filthy dish water in the washing up bowl all night, or never wiping the table down (we have two small kids who make a mess), or never remembering to put the little pot for used tea bags in the dishwasher...I could go on ! Yes but the bottom shelf is directly above the salad drawer which never makes much sense as if it leaks it'll be all over the salad!

Honeybee79 · 06/05/2017 23:30

Yes. Basic food hygiene.

SinglePringle · 06/05/2017 23:37

If I can. But not if it's a whole chicken as no room.

Still alive allllll these years later.

Oldraver · 06/05/2017 23:51

Yes, though we have a meat box that came with the fridge

DrawingLife · 07/05/2017 00:13

Yes

DrawingLife · 07/05/2017 00:14

P.S. And I also get annoyed w my husband for breaking the rules.

Giggorata · 07/05/2017 10:27

Yes, in the meat drawer.

Coulddowithanap · 07/05/2017 10:31

No, we get meat that in sealed packs. Not come across drippy meat other than when it's defrosting. I defrost meat on the kitchen worktop before cooking it so it doesn't leak in the fridge.

lionsleepstonight · 07/05/2017 10:36

I was taught that too, but don't bother theses days due to raw meat being so well wrapped. I think it harks back to the days when both cooked and fresh meats came from the butcher's casually wrapped in greaseproof paper, and fridge shelves were wire.
Sometimes I need to attack a package with scissors just to get the bloody thing open, so no, don't worry about drips.
If I'm feeling particularly naughty I stack the cooked meat on top on the raw meat packet.

MrsPear · 07/05/2017 10:48

Yes

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 07/05/2017 12:08

Yes. DH and ILs don't and it makes me Angry.

Moussemoose · 07/05/2017 12:11

Yep - separate bag for raw meat when shopping.
Separate shelf in the fridge.

tabulahrasa · 07/05/2017 12:19

Nope - but there's rarely raw meat in my fridge anyway, only 2 of the 4 of us eat it and I don't and I do the shopping and cooking, so...

Kokusai · 07/05/2017 12:51

No.

Solid shelves.
Packaged meat.
Cooked meat would be in a plastic box anyway if leftover.

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/05/2017 13:06

Yes

yellowfrog · 07/05/2017 13:11

No, as everything is packaged/contained so can't drip

TanteJeanne · 07/05/2017 14:03

Yes
