Quick Straw Poll - do you all keep raw meat on a separate, lower, shelf than cooked meat in your fridge?

Dh thinks I'm being petty and gets annoyed when I ask him to put cooked meats on the cooked meats/cheese shelf in the fridge (eye level), and raw meat on the bottom shelf. It was something I learned in food hygiene years ago.

So, do you all keep your cooked and raw meat separate? Yes or no...

Yes. Basic hygiene to prevent cross contamination from dripping blood hit ting food which isnt going to be cooked. Lots of people die every year from ecoli, salmonella and other ones I can't remember. Tell him he is an eejjit!

But you still have to stick salad and veg in the drawers beneath the meat shelf because fridges are designed that way.

Ive discovered my salad drawers can slide in on the shelf above, so meat now sits in the bottoms, then the salad drawers, then some more shelves.

Yes, and we have a fridge thermometer. No one has every caught food poisoning from my kitchen that I know of, and I'm proud of that.

Not really.
Raw meat is well wraped. And I usually try to separate it from the rest but not always and not necessarily at the bottom.
If blood is dripping from the packaging it would have contaminated everything in the supermarket trolley, bags etc, no?

In theory, yes. In practice, fridge Tetris sometimes means it doesn't happen. OTOH, if I have raw meat, it's likely to be in a fully sealed container from the supermarket, which means no dripping or cross-contamination likely. At the moment, there's no meat in there at all, so it's not often a problem.

No, I put things where they will fit.

But I am mystified by the suggestion of "dripping blood". Confused That just wouldn't happen. Everything is either in a sealed package or a lidded container. Can't see any problem with that.

I have managed to stay alive for longer than most of you, I bet Grin

Mostly yes but we buy so little meat that we can't always justify a whole shelf for it. It's always sealed though and never touching anything else, always on the bottom shelf just occasionally has other things next to it.

Yes. DH used to be s chef and while there are many things we are somewhat lax about kitchen wise (use by dates on yoghurt ) this and the cross contamination of utensils from raw chicken are absolute essentials in out kitchen.

No, but I don't really keep much raw meat in the fridge. I tend to buy in bulk from an online butcher, immediately portion and then freeze. I take what I need for that night out in the morning and defrost on the kitchen side on a plate, and then cook straight from there. The only raw meat I might have would be bacon in a sealed plastic container, which I'd put anywhere, or perhaps big joints for a roast which are usually vacuum packed, and would be placed on a plate wherever there was space. I certainly wouldn't put joint that was dripping blood in the fridge at all, let alone in a position it could contaminate something.
