To not go back and pay for this?

Feeling a bit crap today. Went to the supermarket. Put my rucksack in the trolley and did my shopping. Went through self scan.
Got back to the car and noticed an item had rolled under my rucksack and I hadn't paid for it. It cost about £2.50.
Should I go back and pay for it (tomorrow) or just keep it and feel a bit guilty.
Walking from the car to shop and back to the car again would have pushed me over the edge because of being ill.
WWYD?

If you feel bad just scan the same item twice next time you are there.

Pleasestoplickingthetv · 06/05/2017 15:47

I wouldn't. But if you feel that guilty, stick £2.50 in the charity box next time you pass one.

WorraLiberty · 06/05/2017 15:48

How far away were you parked? Confused

I wouldn't bother now.

But I'm quite surprised you didn't bother at the time, ill or not.

It's quite a big car park (and busy) so probably a couple of hundred foot each way.

If I was fit and healthy I would have gone straight back in. I'm far too honest.

Would the cashier think I was nuts if I went back and paid for it?
Most folk would just take it wouldn't they?

I'll probably stick something extra in the food bank collection box.

Far too honest?

You left the premises knowing you had something you didn't pay for.

If you were well enough to go shopping and to drive home, you could have walked across the carpark and returned the item.

I'm pretty sure you would have, if you'd left something belonging to you in there.

Happyhippy45 · 06/05/2017 16:01

navy I've been ill for quite a while. Not worked for 18 months. Today was a bad day.

womaninatightspot · 06/05/2017 16:01

I wouldn't bother specifically going back to pay for it but the next time I was in I'd scan the item twice and then it'd even out iyswim.

Happyhippy45 · 06/05/2017 16:04

worra I was in the car park when I noticed.
You have no idea the effort it took me to go to the shops and get essentials nor the symptoms I was experiencing.

Of course the "right" thing to do would be to take it back. In normal circumstances I would have.

Goingtobeawesome · 06/05/2017 16:04

I'd pay the next time I was in if I'd got home before realising. I went back in to pay 48p for some herbs I'd missed when doing a big shop with a toddler. Cashier was surprised I went back.

Happyhippy45 · 06/05/2017 16:07

goingtobe yeah I know if I take it back I'll get funny looks from the cashier.

SapphireStrange · 06/05/2017 16:09

OP, you'll more likely get a thank you, albeit maybe a surprised one! Take it back if it's bothering you.

Worra, lay off the OP, eh?

I didn't get a funny look. She was just surprised I went back to pay I think but it's the right thing to do.

AlpacaLypse · 06/05/2017 16:13

I've done this by accident too. I did take the packaging in with me when I next went to that shop so I could pay for it, the lady on customer services was surprised but appreciative.

MargotLovedTom1 · 06/05/2017 16:14

I'd probably think "Oops" then nothing more about it.

WankingMonkey · 06/05/2017 16:14

I wouldn't. I was going to say I would scan twice but nope. the machine would shout at me for ages to 'PUT THE ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA!!!!' so if I felt guilty, 2.50 in a charity box would do tbh. if it was something for like 20 quid I would have gone back. I think.

Nanny0gg · 06/05/2017 16:15

Normally I'd say Pay, but I think the food bank idea is a good one.

MadMags · 06/05/2017 16:18

Food bank idea is a good one when you're feeling better.

Some people are complete dicks when it comes to illnesses, so ignore them.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 06/05/2017 16:18

If it was an accident and a big supermarket I wouldn't think twice about it. They honestly won't miss the money, and these mistakes happen. I certainly wouldn't take something on purpose but if I did it by mistake I wouldn't think it worth the time or effort to try and return it. Also it probably evens up the times they have sent me food about to go off in my online delivery, or they missed off an item and I didn't notice.

I know the majority of posts on this thread will be outraged, but honestly this is what most people I know in RL would do.

If a corner shop or independent business I would repay them next time I was there.

Happyhippy45 · 06/05/2017 16:20

I'm genuinely a bit embarrassed tbh.
I could just stick it under my rucksack in the trolley next time I go and then remember to look under my bag for rogue items like I usually do.
Then I won't have to explain myself and feel like a dithery old cow

WorraLiberty · 06/05/2017 16:21

Oh come for god sake.

The OP said Feeling a bit crap today

Hence my reply...

Had she said what she later said to Navy.... I've been ill for quite a while. Not worked for 18 months. Today was a bad day

My reply would have been quite different.

WorraLiberty · 06/05/2017 16:22

*on

peukpokicuzo · 06/05/2017 16:22

I was going to say I would scan twice but nope. the machine would shout at me for ages to 'PUT THE ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA!!!!

Some shops show an "I don't want to bag this item" option on screen in the self-scan.

SapphireStrange · 06/05/2017 16:23

Worra, in the same post she said Walking from the car to shop and back to the car again would have pushed me over the edge because of being ill, which I'd have thought might have been a clue that the OP isn't just a tad under the weather.
