To think sauce jugs on the plate are disgusting

Watching Masterchef tonight and maybe it's just me but does anyone else thing it is disgustingly dirty to place the small sauce/gravy jug on the plate with the food when it's been standing on the work surface in the kitchen?

It makes me gag at the the thought of it. Nobody, even the critics, seem to mind at all.

Hmm
WitchSharkadder · 06/05/2017 00:16

Huh?

PickAChew · 06/05/2017 00:16

If they've been observing appropriate food hygiene methods, the worksurface should be as clean as the plate.

It's not like the cat's been sat on it.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 06/05/2017 00:17

No, I don't. It's a clean jug, no different to putting cutlery on a plate.

WitchSharkadder · 06/05/2017 00:17

You mean the work surfaces the food that they're going to put in their mouths was prepared on...?

Fruitcorner123 · 06/05/2017 00:18

Are the work surfaces on masterchef not cleaned regularly? I would have thought the standard of cleaning would be quite high in a kitchen like that.

BackforGood · 06/05/2017 00:25

YABU.
Yup, it's just you that has an issue with this.

Smellbellina · 06/05/2017 00:26

Umm... No?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/05/2017 00:26

YABU and really quite hypersensitive. Are you normally this over-reactionary to the thought of germs?

CormorantDevouringTime · 06/05/2017 00:32

In my kitchen it wouldn't be ok because I don't keep those surfaces food safe - I only chop foodon designated chopping boards and I can't keep the cats off the worktops, which only get a cursory daily wipe down.

But I assume that the Masterchef work surfaces don't have lazy tabbies parking their arses on them, and get more than a half hearted wipedown at the end of the day.

ilovechocolates · 06/05/2017 00:36

I don't see anything wrong with it but I don't like it.

Asmoto · 06/05/2017 00:37

Same as Cormorant my work surfaces are covered in invisible cat-residue so I wouldn't do it, but in a professional environment, you'd have bigger worries than the sauce jug if the surfaces were that dirty.

Asmoto · 06/05/2017 00:38

^Syntax fail - I mean the residue is invisible - I don't have invisible cats!

HashiAsLarry · 06/05/2017 00:39

Where do you think they put the utensil's they're cooking with? Or do you assume fresh for every stir? Hmm

ChasedByBees · 06/05/2017 00:39

Just you I think.

TwoDaysLater · 06/05/2017 00:49

I'm here to rescue you OP 😁 coz I think it's a teeny bit revolting too.

It's ok if the sauce pots have been freshly cleaned and kept on clean bits of the workmsurface but if they have been placed on bits of the work surface where they have been handling raw food then it's a bit grotty. It's not going to kill you but I wouldn't do it.

I'd imagine in the master chief kitchen they would be kept separate from the working areas until being used.

It's not the same as knives and forks as they are kept in a clean cutlery drawer then put on the plate or next to the plate.

BTW, I'd assume the utensils that they are cooking on are kept somewhere clean between being used.

user1471545174 · 06/05/2017 00:49

It's definitely crossed my mind too, OP. I try not to think about it but I'd rather have it next to the plate.

IloveBanff · 06/05/2017 00:51

Surely the sauce isn't poured into the little jugs until the last minute so they're as clean as the main plate and the cutlery.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/05/2017 00:52

depends on the work surface.

I hate when people put their bags or god forbid shoes on them.. but these people nealy always use a plate or board and never put food directly onto the work surface.

Ski4130 · 06/05/2017 00:56

I bet you're all kinds of fun when you eat out!

user1491572121 · 06/05/2017 00:58

YANBU OP but I am also a bit hyper sensitive when it comes to food cleanliness.

I also gag at the trendy places serving things like pie in PLANT POTS and on lumps of slate or bricks.

I want a plate. A clean one please...with no jug on it.

e1y1 · 06/05/2017 01:03

YABU - kitchen worksurfaces (and preferably anything in a kitchen, floor included), should be as clean as the plate.

IrregularCommentary · 06/05/2017 01:04

Seeing things through other people's eyes is mind boggling at times.

FrenchLavender · 06/05/2017 01:11

It makes you gag? Confused

What do you do about your cutlery, that's been sitting on a surface somewhere? How do you cope I restaurants when the cutlery is laid onto a table that hasn't been sterilised first?

Food is stirred with utensils that are taken in and out of the pot and laid on the kitchen surface, isn't it?

You sound a teensy bit over-anxious about this.

user1491572121 · 06/05/2017 01:18

French I don't cope well at all. I have to polish the cutlery myself before I eat. I don't eat out much because of this. It's weird...I can't control it but with friends, I have SOME who I feel are "clean" and others I dont.

I've thrown away mugs before now because visitors I deem as "unclean" have drunk from them. It's NOTHING to do with them. I just can't help it.

I should probably get help.
