To think sauce jugs on the plate are disgusting

Watching Masterchef tonight and maybe it's just me but does anyone else thing it is disgustingly dirty to place the small sauce/gravy jug on the plate with the food when it's been standing on the work surface in the kitchen?

It makes me gag at the the thought of it. Nobody, even the critics, seem to mind at all.

It's not like the cat's been sat on it.

No guarantees of that round here, I'm afraid. Despite my best efforts.

FrenchLavender · 06/05/2017 01:51

Yes user you really should seek help. Do you have a dishwasher? You know it sterilises as it washes, don't you?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 06/05/2017 01:55

I can't say this has ever bothered me Confused

However, I don't like it when they give you ketchup like that because it's not enough and they're being stingy bastards! Grin

Almost certainly would have in mine. I'm really not getting the OP's angst.

RubbishMantra · 06/05/2017 02:01

Misread your post BlackeyedSusan, and thought it was about eating from a shoe.

Reminded me of

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 06/05/2017 02:15

Almost certainly would have in mine.

Ugh. Now that does make me want to be sick.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/05/2017 02:46

I'm so glad I don't care about stuff like this.

And oddly I can't think of any occasions when any of my household have actually been sick other than the odd hangover related incident (or in my son's case the overdose of Captain Scarlett lurid red icing birthday cake)

LakieLady · 06/05/2017 02:50

I also gag at the trendy places serving things like pie in PLANT POTS and on lumps of slate or bricks.

So do I, but that's because I think it's poncey and pretentious.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/05/2017 03:36

Yes indeed. It's not as if the earth and mortar is left on.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 06/05/2017 03:59

LassWiTheDelicateAir

Whether or not your family get sick is irrelevant. Letting your cat near food is absolutely disgusting, and you absolutely should care.

I am so glad I know very few people with pets, else I would have a lot more dinner invitations to decline.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 06/05/2017 03:59

(It does seem that people with pets have very low hygiene standards, hence why I won't eat at anyone's house who does have a pet.)

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/05/2017 04:11

Yes I probably do. I still don't see why I should care. Fortunately my friends aren't uptight either.

Seeing things through other people's eyes is mind boggling at times Isn't it just, Irregular. I sometimes feel I've landed on another planet.

user1491326393 · 06/05/2017 04:23

you actually, physically gagged at this? you may have deeper issues which need addressing, as this is not a normal reaction

user1491326393 · 06/05/2017 04:24

i mean you can say "oh gagging" in the trendy way ppl do these days but if you actually retched and sick came in your mouth then you need actual help

Sparklingbrook · 06/05/2017 04:38

YABU and a teeny bit weird.

As a PP said the cutlery (ie the bit that you actually put in your mouth) has been on the table. Shock Which isn't as clean as the food prep surfaces in a commercial kitchen.

Oh and my cat isn't allowed in the kitchen at all so I must gain some points for that.

Plunkette · 06/05/2017 04:46

Aren't your work surfaces clean Invisible? I can't think what the problem would be.

RubbishMantra · 06/05/2017 04:48

Last time I had a BBQ, Little M and I happily shared a lovingly home made beef burger, with stilton - one bite for you, one bite for me sort of thing.

He also made off with a packet of naice sausages, and was quietly munching one. We had a few drinks, forgot sausage had been partly eaten, and that went onto the BBQ too. Nobody got ill or died.

SherlockPotter · 06/05/2017 05:02

Bit of an overreaction but okay...

Masterchef has been edited so the work surfaces will be cleaned, why do you think a task that's 1hr 15 minutes is done in 15 minutes!

MsJamieFraser · 06/05/2017 05:13

So if you make a joint of meat and leave it to rest in the chopping board... do you find that disgusting, or if you make a sandwich do you find that disgusting as it's touched another surface?
Odd and UR

MissEDashwood · 06/05/2017 05:17

I'm pretty sure it's clean, it would make for boring viewing if the narrator interjected, James has got out the dettol and is anti bacing his work surfaces Grin

I think it's pretty much a given.

InvisibleAt53 · 06/05/2017 08:21

You see them pouring sauces into the jugs, it's slopping about all over the place and then they stick it on the plate. As a diner, the first thing you do is take it off so why put it on in the first place?

I have a really sensitive stomach when it comes to food preparation so I am probably over-critical. It's like restaurants that keep your food warm under lights for an eternity before bringing it out to you. Or places that prepare salads and leave them under lights. The kitchen where I work prepares lettuce for the garnish and sits it next to the warming plate. Only had it once, by mistake, but never again!

I've got weird irrational thoughts about stuff though, like if I think too much about how many people have used the cutlery it creeps me out but I get over it. I do understand this is washed thoroughly but sometimes I think how many mouths have been round this!

WindwardCircle · 06/05/2017 08:49

I'm pretty hot on kitchen hygiene, I was shocked by how many people on here thought it was fine to eat cooked chicken which had been left out at room temperature for hours, but for the life of me I can't see what's wrong with a clean jug that's sat on a clean work surface being put onto a clean plate. Presumably on Masterchef they have to follow professional kitchen hygiene standards, so it's not like there are oodles of roving germs just waiting to jump onto anything placed onto a work surface.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 06/05/2017 08:51

I presume that in top flight kitchens you could eat your dinner off the worksurface itself. They're made of stainless steel and are scrupulously wiped down and cleaned. I presume that when they're filming Masterchef they'll have to observe strict hygiene practices otherwise the production company would be liable for any illness etc.
