Fragrant Diane, she really is the kiss of death.
My toes are still curling

Diane Abbot has been around a long time and her delivery has always set my teeth on edge. As a middle class white labour voter, perhaps I can never be sure that my opinion is not rooted in some deep-seated unconscious racism. I can endlessly 'check my privilege', but that doesn't change my gut-and-brain response to her interview manner.

That said, there is a mountain of white politicians whose delivery gets my goat something terrible: John McDonnell is also allergy-causing, as is Gove, Hunt. Emily Thornberry also delivers her lines like Lady Bracknell, which is obfuscatory and annoying, but not quite as patronising.

It is unfortunate that Abbot is endlessly on air, presumably due to the dearth of experienced shadow cabinet members. The worst aspect of her strange vocal delivery is how patronising she sounds. She explains, slowly and didactically, as if her audience is incredibly slow and stupid. That in itself is hugely irritating. Then there are those strange mushy sounds as she wades, labouriously and condescendingly, through a very boring point. Yes she has a slight speech impediment, but I don't think I'm being prejudiced about that either. I don't doubt she is very intelligent, I don't doubt her motivation in politics and she is obviously hugely resilient to have lasted this long and to have carried on despite shocking racism that is constantly aimed at her. I am also pretty sure that if I met her in a bar, her delivery wouldn't piss me off half as much. Neither do I care who she has slept with, speculation about which is pure misogyny at work. However none of that helps when you have to endure her terrible interviews.

It is well known that Black boys do particularly badly in comprehensive schools. Her sons are at much greater risk of failing than most other politicians' children.

I heard her on the Today programme and she was perfectly capable of answering a straight question and explained very clearly the difference between ideas put about pre-campaigning and a not quite finished manifesto.

I like her and would be perfectly happy for her to be Home Secretary.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness

Foodtime are you Diane Abbot?

Oh sorry, I didn't know being fair meant I was her. Why didn't you just say you wanted a thread to attack someone for no reason. Got it.

Like I said I am not a huge fan of hers. Again I'll say she's a poor speaker. But the level of hate she gets is shocking. The "crimes" she's committed are not the bad and no worse then any other politician.
The only two things people can say is she sends her kids to private school. Most politicians do.
She made a comment about learning from other mothers. Shocking stuff.

She gets labelled a racist for nothing but boris can say things like bongo bongo land and that's fine.

People love someone to hate and she's an easy target

BelleTheSheepdog · 02/05/2017 10:50

Richard Burgon is also one to watch and cringe at imo.

NoLotteryWinYet · 02/05/2017 10:50

it's the hypocrisy DA is remembered for over schooling though. If she'd not made such a song and dance about being totally against private education, she wouldn't be remembered for it. Rightly, nobody likes a hypocrite.

Ncforthispost2005 · 02/05/2017 10:51

90% of politicians send their children to private school. Why hate her so much for it. At least she wants to make state schools better. The conservative will destroy state schools.
I went to boarding school and my children will aswell , but I can still care about children in state schools.

But you/she don't care enough to send your own children to state schools and work with the schools to make them better. As for the conservatives ruining schools, what about the 13 years of labour govt have the schools not improved during this period so that you and DA could send your kids there?
And she made such a big deal of other politicians sending their kids to private school over the years and then did the same herself, that is a hypocrite.
Also she advocates no grammar schools for more able kids going to state school but it doesn't apply to her where if you have money then you can pay for a better education.

hoddtastic · 02/05/2017 10:51

the manifesto is not written yet, snap election. It's being done tomorrow. The tories (as far as i am aware) also don't have a manifesto even though they called the election)

I think Dianne Abbot is judged more harshly than white men, make of that what you want,

McT123 · 02/05/2017 10:51

90% of politicians send their children to private school.
87.3% of statistics are completely made up.

GwenStaceyRocks · 02/05/2017 10:52

I'm disappointed this is what counts as political debate on MN -
accusing a politician of being 'off their face' and 'shagging their way to the top'. This thread is full of sexist and racist undertones.
I've never read such vicious nonsense about any male politician. Here's hoping it's MRAs disguised as MN members. Otherwise it's beyond depressing.

derxa · 02/05/2017 10:52

Most politicians do Even Cameron and Gove didn't.

foodtime · 02/05/2017 10:54

wickerlampshade

No problem with politicians sending their kids to private school. But from what I remember she had banged on for years about how it was so terrible for them to do that, but different for her son because "African mothers will do anything for their kids" or words to that effect.

See this is the problem. You don't even know what she said.
Africa and the Caribbean are exactly the same thing right?

CoolCarrie · 02/05/2017 10:55

I wondered how long it would talk for the words racist & racist would turn up on this thread, next it will be misogyny!

Goldfishjane · 02/05/2017 10:56

I met Diane Abbott about 8 years ago

based on recent interviews, I'm wondering if she is perhaps ill in some way. She seems like a completely different person.

CoolCarrie · 02/05/2017 10:57

Bingo Sexist!

GwenStaceyRocks · 02/05/2017 10:57

Carrie how nice of you to take the time away from the other Diane Abbot bashing thread to post here too. Look up MRAs if you think I didn't mention misogyny.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 02/05/2017 10:58

GwenStacey sorry, perhaps you'd care to share your " Political Debate Thread Etiquette" with us all.

Quite frankly Diane Abbot behaved as though she'd taken some mind altering substance this morning. Sorry is that better than "off her face"?
Oh and "needs some capacity and capability training in order to work more effectively with figures and data" as opposed to "she seems really shit at maths"?

OP posts:
Fortnum · 02/05/2017 11:00

i question her competence to be in the shadow cabinet full stop. She is on record for being terribly racist, she has thrown out policys with little background on how they would be funded. She is an ideolog with little grasp on reality. Same can be said for Corbyn and McConnell

GwenStaceyRocks · 02/05/2017 11:01

Gin if the comments on this thread meet MN talk guidelines then they'll let them stand. If they don't, then they'll delete them. I'm interested to see what the outcome is.

SquatBetty · 02/05/2017 11:01

I want to like Diane Abbott, I admired her during the London rioting in August 2011 as she had the balls to actually stand on the streets of her constituency and be interviewed whilst other politicians cravenly hid in TV studios doing their interviews about their riot hit constituencies.

But I just can't - I find her too patronising and supercilious.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 02/05/2017 11:01

Gwen don't make this about men v women. It's about someone being inept and self parodying, which last time I checked transcends gender, colour, religion, creed, age or bottom size. So stop trotting out clichés

I couldn't write what I think of a great many male politicians in here without the houseswear box being left overflowing

OP posts:
MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 02/05/2017 11:02

And to think that in 6 weeks' time she might be a member of the Cabinet... Shock

GwenStaceyRocks · 02/05/2017 11:02

Gin I'll leave you to it and check back in later to see if MNHQ agrees with you.

Orlantina · 02/05/2017 11:02

She should have expected the first question to be:

How much will it cost?

She should have had a well thought, rehearsed answer to that basic, fundamental question.

I'm not a politician but I would have though that's Interview 101.
When you propose a new policy, people will ask you what it will cost and how it will be paid for.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 02/05/2017 11:03

I mistrust the whole boiling of them.

Billy Connolly once said that the desire to be a politician should automatically exempt that person. I know we'd have anarchy then but blimey, some of the bozos we have in a powerful position.........

foodtime · 02/05/2017 11:03

Even though you disagree with me I Appreciate you so much in this thread. Your up for having a debate with facts and not just attacking.
I agree with you in regard to the grammar schools. I have never said she was great. It's not right her sending her son to private school especially after all the things she said. But I can see why she did it!
