Would you report someone for smoking with their child in the car?

JigglyTuff · 02/05/2017 09:13

Just walked past a woman waiting in her car for infant school gates to open. There was a child in the front seat. She was blowing her smoke out the window and I looked round because I could smell it and wondered where it was coming from.

Or should I just mind my own business?

I can keep away from things very easily. You should try it, its obviously rubbing off on you.

ThymeLord · 04/05/2017 15:57

user1493022461 I am loving your work on this thread! Grin

PhyllisNights · 04/05/2017 16:07

@ThymeLord cheerleading for someone that seems emotionally stunted and results in using childish retorts?

As you were, smokers...

user1493022461 · 04/05/2017 16:16

Can we all borrow the keyboard psychologist ray, or are you keeping it all to yourself Katie?

jamie2 · 04/05/2017 16:20

A bit over the top, in my opinion, as parents subject their children to passive smoking in the home and it's not illegal - yet.

LornaMumsnet · 04/05/2017 16:48

Ahem

Can we have a little bit of peace and love?

kali110 · 04/05/2017 17:23

PhyllisNights you've made your childish comments to people yet don't like it when it's directed back at you.
Why do you keep assuming it's only smokers that are disagreeing with you?

TribeOf5 · 04/05/2017 17:36

Are your lot serious?
My 13yo has more sense than most of you. She came home with the reg etc of a car and tells me a woman was smoking in her car with a baby and child inside.
Even my teenage daughter who's life mainly consists of make up, friends, school and electronics knows the right thing to do in that situation.

As for the people effin and jeffin at the OP, chill the hell out. You say people are being judgy? Pot, meet keetle.
What the smoker was doing is illegal, the police will decide if they have the resources to address the issue. It is our duty as British citizens to report a crime when we see it.
Stop trying to be a self righteous, know-it-all keyboard warrior and voice your opinion nicely. Did your mother teach you nothing?

PhyllisNights · 04/05/2017 17:51

kali110, I didn't start off with childish insults. They were getting chucked my way. Yes, I probably shouldn't have lowered myself. Not everyone that has disagreed with reporting it in this thread has been a smoker, a few identified themselves as non-smokers.

It just seems that some people are getting very angry in this thread about reporting something that is illegal. It's completely irrelevant to whether the police force are stretched, they can prioritise and deal with it how they see fit.

Idoidoidoidoido · 04/05/2017 18:01

Smoking is bad for you, nobody disputes that, however,
people have become a bit hysterical about the whole passive smoking thing.
I grew up around passive smoking, as did millions of other children at that time.
We survived.
At least now, most parents go outside to smoke and this woman had the cigarette out of the window.
I would love to know how the namby pamby, interfering do gooders of today would cope in a real crisis. Hmm

Idoidoidoidoido · 04/05/2017 18:06

I really hate this meddling culture we seem to be in lately.

This......why do people think they have a right to get involved in other people's lives. It erodes freedom, wastes resources and worst of all destroys community spirit as you can't trust anyone.

For some people, finding offense in every little thing and reporting people makes their boring lives more interesting?

PhyllisNights · 04/05/2017 18:12

Tibeof5's 13 year old daughter wouldn't have got some thrill from taking down the registration number of a woman smoking in the car with her baby.

I don't know where people get the idea that we're all jumping up and down, excited to call the police.

I have a full-time job where I have to travel. I have always had a busy social life (less busy since get pregnant). No one is walking around bored, trying to catch someone out so they can get some holier than thou, do-gooder high.

If I could do anything about pregnant women smoking, I would.

I hope you told her not to be so bloody daft. Are you training your children to be mini informers now? Got your picture of the Chairman up at home yet?

user1493022461 · 04/05/2017 18:46

I bet you would Katie, and write a lovely article for the Daily Hate about how women shouldn't control their own bodies. Probably already did, in fact.

PhyllisNights · 04/05/2017 18:53

We're not arguing what women do with their own bodies like we'd argue pro-choice (which I am totally for). Smoking while pregnant can lead to all sorts of health problems for the child.

Topseyt · 04/05/2017 18:58

I am not a smoker. Never have been.

I am the child of two smokers though. I categorically do not considermyself to have been abused as a child.

I didn't want people smoking around my children, and by and large it didn't happen. They never smoked in our car, and when visiting our house they only smoked outside.

I think this is distasteful, but no, I wouldn't bother reporting it. I don't consider that the children of smokers to necessarily be abused. As I say, I am the child of smokers. They are still my much adored parents.

TribeOf5 · 04/05/2017 19:00

User1493022461, you say what the hell you want and you parent your kids however you want. If you wouldn't report it then that's your prerogative.
My 13yo did the right thing in the eyes of the law and morally.
I'm not training my children to be anything other than decent human beings. It's not about being offended by idiot things (like trolls comments and opinions etc) it's about protecting those that are vulnerable and being proactive in life.
Why don't you go do something proactive and GFY? Might make you less of a pain in the ass for people on here. 😁

UppityHumpty · 04/05/2017 19:04

@TribeOf5 - I hope she reports every illegal thing she sees. Racism, sexism, illegal parking...if not and she only reports things you've taught her to view as immoral then you haven't raised her properly. Hmm

lasttimeround · 04/05/2017 19:19

Go TribeO5!

squoosh · 04/05/2017 19:53

Why don't you go do something proactive and GFY?

What does GFY mean? Go fuck yourself? Not sure you should be so smug when coming out with gems like that.

FrenchMartiniTime · 04/05/2017 19:53

Can we all just agree that usertoolazytothinkofaname is a cock womble and move on?
