Would you report someone for smoking with their child in the car?

Just walked past a woman waiting in her car for infant school gates to open. There was a child in the front seat. She was blowing her smoke out the window and I looked round because I could smell it and wondered where it was coming from.

Or should I just mind my own business?

Report to who exactly? And what do you think would happen?

Abraiid2 · 02/05/2017 09:17

No I wouldn't. Not good, admittedly, but I wouldn

I would do a passive aggressive sigh and tut, perhaps.

PhyllisNights · 02/05/2017 09:17

I'd report it to social services. It's a form of abuse.

namechange20050 · 02/05/2017 09:21

It's illegal. So I suppose you could take the reg and call the police non emergency number if you want to.

Mumzypopz · 02/05/2017 09:21

Social services will not do anything about it. That's a very minor misdemeanour.

I'm sure SS have more pressing matters.

It's illegal. Mothers shouldn't smoke while they're pregnant. Why should a mother be smoking in her car with the child present?

Contact the school, ring the police, do whatever you can. It's not fair on the child.

Oblomov17 · 02/05/2017 09:25

Abuse? Please. SS have more pressing matters.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 02/05/2017 09:26

I guess if you'd report someone for using a mobile phone whilst driving then it makes sense that you'd report someone for smoking in a car with a child. Both are illegal.

user1493022461 · 02/05/2017 09:26

You would, huh? And how would that call go?
"I'd like to report someone for smoking in their car with a child. I don't know their names or address and even if I did there would be no proof they did so, and its not actually something you'd investigate anyway, but yeah, I need to report it to feel better about myself. Thanks!"

TheFairyCaravan · 02/05/2017 09:27

It's illegal to smoke with a child in the car. I don't think I'd report them. It would be your word against theirs. I think the police would need to see them doing it to take action.

MrsJamesMathews · 02/05/2017 09:27

Do most of these posters not realise that smoking in a car with a child present is illegal? The fine is £50.

I would have taken a sneaky photo and reported her to the police, yes. As I would report anyone I saw breaking a law which is in place to protect the vulnerable.

I would also (and have done) report anyone driving their child without being strapped in, or the correct child seat.

Do you not realise that even if you see someone doing something illegal, there is usually fuck all you can do about it?
You seem to think the plod will swoop in on your say so to track down someone for this infraction. Get a grip.

Jesus fucking Christ Confused

PhyllisNights · 02/05/2017 09:32

If you see it happen next time, take the registration down and report it. At the very least, she deserves to be scared so she can think about her selfish behaviour.

PhyllisNights · 02/05/2017 09:33

Taking your DS to the pub is not abusive. My two year old nephew goes to a family friendly pub - nothing wrong with that at all.

The mother is being incredibly selfish by smoking in a car with her child. It is illegal and she should rightly face some punishment for it.

BastardGoDarkly · 02/05/2017 09:33

You need a hobby Phyllis hopefully when your baby's born, you'll have less time for frothing and judging?

MrsJamesMathews · 02/05/2017 09:34

Wow. So you see something illegal, even damaging to a minor and you'd just walk by, mind your own business, not give a shit. Nice. Hmm

With a photo or at least a registration number, yes I would expect the police to make a call and point out the bleeding obvious to the offender.

And LanaKanes how, exactly, do you figure that a car is inherently more dangerous than inhaling cigarette smoke? Driving kills a very, very small percentage of users. Inhaling cigarette smoke is damaging to your health, always and every time. And it's not going to be "one fag", is it?

lottieandmia · 02/05/2017 09:35

Nobody is a perfect parent but subjecting anyone to cigarette smoke, especially within the confines of a car is very selfish and stupid. It's not conjecture that passive smoking damages health and causes cancer - why else would it be banned in public places?

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 02/05/2017 09:36

I am well aware it's illegal.
But the police, like SS, have a limited budget and limited forces.
What they should be doing, is focusing on proper fucking crimes.

You'd b the first to complain if they couldn't come out for a violent crime, or a robbery, yet calling them for such minor things would mean they wasted resources they could have used for the important stuff.

No, smokingin the car ain't good, but neither is wasting the time of an already over stretched force, and taking help away from others in more difficult situations.

FeralBeryl · 02/05/2017 09:36

Errr it's ILLEGAL!

If you would report someone for using their phone when driving, you would be equally likely to report this.

If you got the registration, you could pop into a police station with it, they could then decide whether to send a letter/PCSO round to remind them of the new law and relevant fines.

Taking your child to a pub is not in the same league.
Unless you're buying them absinthe...

Oblomov17 · 02/05/2017 09:37

Yes I know it's illegal.
But hadn't there unfortunately only been one fine about it?

But wasting SS time with stupid phone calls when they are seriously understaffed to deal with real abuse, makes Phyllis ridiculous and like a pp said she needs to get a grip.
