As in like a nippy little metal two wheel stick thingy, rather that a moped.

Is it wankery? Will people point and laugh?

It's not the same as cycling on the pavement

a 100 kg man hitting you at 15 mph, whether on a bike or a scooter, is going to bloody hurt and probably leave you with broken bones. I've seen commuters in London undertaking cyclists (on the road) whilst scooting on the pavement.

I went to Paris a few weeks ago and was surprised with the number of adults nipping about on scooters. Go for it! It looked like a right laugh.

How about if he's running?

Ifailed · 07/05/2017 07:58

SoupDragon If he ran straight into you, yes. However very few could sustain 15 mph for long, that's doing a mile in 4 minutes. Plus a scooter is typically made from metal, and its the impact of that which can cause serious damage.

SoupDragon · 07/05/2017 08:14

It's also about as likely as someone running into you.

Scooting simply is not the same as cycling, just like running is not the same.

MsGameandWatch · 07/05/2017 08:21

But no one is going at 15 mph on crowded pavements. It's not possible to build up that kind of speed when there's so many people and obstacles about. If people are going fast it's because there's nothing in the way.

I think they look a teeny bit wanky but who cares? Only thing is looking out for other pedestrians, as people have said. I walk past a bit of Hampstead Heath on my way to work and there are loads of people - actually, always men, I've never seen a woman on one - and at one point the pavement narrows under a bridge - I have been hit once there by an adult scooterer and it hurt like fuck but the guy was mortified and so apologetic and I have seen him quite a few times since get off his scooter there and walk!
So yeah, get one, they look fun, but be aware of others.

Nquartz · 07/05/2017 08:46

I saw a bloke arrive at work on one, he's really trendy so it must be ok!!
I quite fancy one, I'm fed of having to run to keep up with DD when she wants to race to/from school.

GoatsFeet · 07/05/2017 08:49

YABU.

Is it wankery?

Yes

Will people point and laugh?
No, because most people are polite, and kind, and won't mock a wanker (and his wife) to his face, But I will judge in my head.

Almost had my toes (including a recovering broken toe) run over by two small children on scooters in a tiny shop. Performance parenting going on. Rude more like.

Don't add to the aggravations we all share in public space.

Ifailed · 07/05/2017 08:50

Clearly my experience is different from others, I've seen people (usually men) whizzing along weaving between people going very fast, especially coming over various bridges in London travelling to and from railway stations.

NeverTwerkNaked · 12/05/2017 07:14

The way I scoot to work is on a combined footpath/cycle way. I would say that is perfect for scooting, it is wide, and scooters are far safer mixed with people than bicycles are. Often there aren't many people on my entire scoot anyway. They are very controllable and I can stop in an instant - just jump off.
It saves me driving my car into a very polluted town, saves me taking up a parking space in the town all day, keeps me fit. not sure how anyone can think any of that is a bad thing! (I wouldn't have time to walk- I can just about squeeze my hours in between school drop off and pick up if I scoot!)

NeverTwerkNaked · 12/05/2017 07:16

I was in Southsea the other week and there were loads of adults on scooters. Anywhere flat and with wide pavements/shared cycle ways is perfect. If it cuts pollution and increases how active people are then that's a good thing!

TroysMammy · 12/05/2017 07:20

Yesterday I saw an adult on one of these scooters and the first thing I thought was "I expect he'll have trouble with his hips in a couple of years".

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 12/05/2017 07:27

Samantha Cameron scoots....

NeverTwerkNaked · 12/05/2017 08:20

allthewitty She probably walks too, and drives a car, rides a bike ....

BorisTrumpsHair · 12/05/2017 12:24

"Trendy" people in London were scooting 10 years agao.
These days it's just people who want an active way to get somewhere fast - I see all types of adults (varied by age, colour, body type, sex etc) scooting in London
