£50 weekly shop!!!!

Back story.... I'm a sahm, hubby works, 2 kids and a cat.

I do online shopping as I don't drive and hubby refuses to go to the supermarket on his days off. So I did our usual weekly shop this morning, asked for his bank card and was asked how much it was,I said £50 and was greeted with "WHY is it so much?"

AIBU in thinking £50 isn't that much to feed 2 adults, 2 children and a cat, (It includes packed lunches for hubby and child)

OP posts:

I spend twice that

PurpleDaisies · 01/05/2017 15:59

If he thinks it's so expensive, he should go it.

offblackeggshell · 01/05/2017 16:00

Sounds like he needs to do the shop one week!

gamerchick · 01/05/2017 16:01

He needs to do the shop so he sees how much things cost. It's pretty obvious he doesn't do it like ever.

arethereanyleftatall · 01/05/2017 16:02

We spend around double that for one cat less than your family size. Another £100 if we're hosting that week.

Vroomster · 01/05/2017 16:02

Tell him to do it himself.

gamerchick · 01/05/2017 16:02

Give him a list though and ask him to find them as cheap as possible.

NynaevesSister · 01/05/2017 16:02

Print out the shopping list, give it to him and tell him to do better.

i think £50 a week is pretty good.

EmmaC78 · 01/05/2017 16:02

Sounds fine to me. I am £25 a week for me plus 2 cats so I think you are doing well.

gleam · 01/05/2017 16:02

Where's your bank card?

RitaMills · 01/05/2017 16:03

I spend twice that as well, and that's just two adults and a child. Prices have gone up dramatically this year I've noticed.

Gunpowder · 01/05/2017 16:03

I would be THRILLED if we could get our shop done for that. Get him to do it for a couple of weeks!

SpringTown46 · 01/05/2017 16:03

Why don't you have a card?

gamerchick · 01/05/2017 16:04

Do you have access to the family money OP?

annandale · 01/05/2017 16:04

We spend £100 for three of us, no pets. That usually needs us to buy another 4 pts of milk on top later in the week.

Apparently you CAN do it for less than £50, there will be people popping up to say so, but not much IMO.

Has it changed? Have you been managing £30 a week (and if so how??) and it's suddenly shot up? Otherwise, he can do it - and not for a one-off week either, but for two months every week.

alltouchedout · 01/05/2017 16:04

I'd assume he was joking and laugh. Then I'd start asking him how much he thought random things (packet of pasta, block of cheese, a cucumber, etc) cost. Then I'd end up being disgusted with him and his lack of knowledge.

annandale · 01/05/2017 16:05

Oh blimey, yes, missed the not having a bank card thing. What?

LemonCurdles · 01/05/2017 16:05

I'm a sahm with 1 dc and spend more than that on bare essentialls. He sounds tight OP.

MistyMinge · 01/05/2017 16:06

He needs a dose of reality. We're a family of four with no pets, and we spend anything between 50 to 90 a week. 50 pound a week shops are rare these days, even in lidl or aldi.

I think he needs to do the shop and see what things really cost.

Fluffyears · 01/05/2017 16:07

Two of us and we spend £70+. I remember when it used to come in at £45ish

Kateallison16 · 01/05/2017 16:07

50 pound is very good. To be honest i spend more than that on just me, my partner and one cat.

Id delete the basket and make him do it. Then say "why is it so much?!" When hes done.

wineusuallyhelps · 01/05/2017 16:08

There are 5 of us and a large dog and I reckon we spend about £150 per week, if you include top-ups of fruit, veg, bread and milk. It includes packed lunches. My children eat a lot!

You're doing well.

Northgate · 01/05/2017 16:08

YANBU.

£50 a week sounds like you're watching what you're spending already.

ShoesieQ · 01/05/2017 16:08

OP please can you do my shopping for me - we easily spend double that on 2 adults and 3 cats! He is BVU PS Yes yes re where's your bank card

Gallavich · 01/05/2017 16:09

I spend that on one adult one child and a cat and I shop at lidl, cook most meals from scratch. That includes packed lunch for both of us. The same shop at Tesco would be £65. He's deluded
