Why should I be able to park outside my own house?

We have three cars at home and while we do have a driveway, this is only large enough for one car. We need to use these cars every day to get to and from work and we're all time pressured so we can't have long walks to get to the car in the morning. Parking in our road is very difficult especially as we are close to the train station so commuters use the road for free parking. A few months ago we started putting out traffic cones on the road outside our house, just enough to reserve space for our two cars - before we started doing this these spaces were always being filled and we often had to park a 5 - 10 minute walk away which is not really acceptable, we have important jobs and this is time we can do without wasting.

We have had a couple of arguments with people over the last couple of weeks and some people have been trying to move the cones and we have had notes put through the door and left on the car. We think we have every right - we own the house, live on the road, and therefore we should be able to park outside our own property. A friend suggested reporting it to the local council and they could reserve the space outside just for us and give us a permit, so I am going to call them next week. Has anyone else had any experience with this? I thought it would be perfectly fine, but the recent problems have made me think that maybe we need to get this extra protection.

I find this highly frustrating, I have a sonwith Asd that can be terribley agressive and I have to get him in the car quickley to take him for a drive to try and calm him down, there has been a car parked outside our house for around 3 months and it hasnt moved.

Reverse plainly but I'd love to hear the phone call to the council asking for VIP spaces Grin

Pigface1 · 30/04/2017 11:40

Surely trolling.

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 30/04/2017 11:40

Our street is parking permits and we can't 'reserve' a space. First come first parked unfortunately!! Infuriating but that's parking!!

Pigface1 · 30/04/2017 11:40

Although one of my neighbours does this. He doesn't even own the house, he's a council tenant. It's fucking irritating.

Abraiid2 · 30/04/2017 11:42

Are you the man who tried to get into my teenage daughter's car and take her mobile out of her hand to stop her parking legally and considerately on a road? The one we had to call the community police about?

ExplodedCloud · 30/04/2017 11:42

Although if the important job is Mayor they might get a space Grin

TheWitTank · 30/04/2017 11:42

YABU. My parents live in a house with public layby parking outside -no driveways to the houses, but my parents rent a garage nearby for their car. The occupants of the other houses have become annoyed recently that the layby is being used by people to park and go for a walk with their dogs, access the local park, visit friends etc and have been blockading "their" space with their wheelie bins. Only it hasn't actually prevented anyone parking, all that happens is the bin gets shunted out of the way (guilty!), put back on the path or squashed (by a lorry😁). I understand the frustration, but if you own a house with no private parking then you have no private parking. The spaces are as much the general publics as they are yours.

I once dated a woman that lived opposite someone like the OP (assuming no reverse). After once parking on the road outside their house, they left a very snotty note on my windscreen asking me not to park in THEIR space in future when visiting her.

Guess where I chose to park from then on?

Spadequeen · 30/04/2017 11:45

Hahaha. You're either new to these parts or it's a reverse.

FatherJemimaRacktool · 30/04/2017 11:45

we have important jobs

Why should I be able to park outside my own house?
Fullstop0 · 30/04/2017 11:46

I can't believe the horrendous comments on here! You can say things which oppose the Op's views without attacking. I'm shocked by this.

228agreenend · 30/04/2017 11:47

You own your house, not the parking spot outside. If you want private parking, buy a house with a bigger drive. If you are time pressurised get up earlier.

AgentProvocateur · 30/04/2017 11:48

GrinGrinGrinGrin

Surely if you're all that important, you should be calling the council and asking them to prove a helicopter and helipad for you!

SnoozeTime · 30/04/2017 11:48

Reverse? Hmm
If not.. public road-free parking-free world - yada yada yada Grin
You could suggest parking permits for residents to the local council but they might limit permits to 2 so it wouldn't solve your problem.

m0therofdragons · 30/04/2017 11:49

Are you my mil? She actually thinks like this. Totally bonkers. Yes it's lovely to be able to park outside your home but you don't own that land so anyone can park there. I'm assuming this is a reverse though.

228agreenend · 30/04/2017 11:50

And why is your job more important than anyone else?

wowfudge · 30/04/2017 11:50

This has to be a reverse. I have the theme song from Bread playing in my head now. If this isn't a reverse then you need to keep your arrogance in check OP because you are no more important than anyone else.

Why cant you park one car on the drive, another across the drive and then just park the 3rd car where you can, like everyone else has to?

I'm just here for the reverse reveal.
