To not want a garden full of shit? (Pic included)

Everyday for the last couple of weeks we've found shit in the garden. I've got a 1 and 3 year old and it's so frustrating not being able to let them out without scouring the grass for poo. Can anyone identify the animal? I assume cat. Any ideas how to kill stop it coming in?

Hmm not a shit expert but it looks more like dog, is your garden easily accessed? Cats tend to go somewhere where they can dig and cover it, eg flowerbeds. Not all do I suppose.

Would be a pretty large cat - have you seen any likely culprits? I'd say dog too, if your garden is accessible- any neighbours with dogs who could get in (but you'd probably have noticed?)

Yes I also thought it looked like dog but we've never had either. Garden is surrounded by fence and or bushes. Neighbours either side don't have animals but think someone at the back has a dog...

Dog or Fox. Way too big for cat....I clean litter trays daily, and in 25 years of cat slavery, have never seen one that big.

Some people let their dogs out at night, presumably to shit somewhere they don't have to pick it up.

It would take a confident cat to shit in the middle of a lawn and not cover it up.

Definitely fox poo. My parents had a vixen raising her cubs in their garden a couple of years ago, and there was lots of similar poo.

It's not a cat - cats don't usually do more than two 'logs' at once.

I agree, cats bury their poo, also wouldn't expect a cat poo to be that big unless it was a cheetah!

A fox once strolled into my garden and looked me in the eye while he shat on my lawn. It looked similar to that, similar to cat poo.

Cats don't always bury their shit. Mine used to crap all over the lawn.

you can try sprinkling herbs and spices around the bases of the bushes. and maintain fences as well as possibly. but keep in mind that foxes can easily climb a 6ft fence...

Another vote for fox poo here. Many years ago we left my boy's Bob the Builder hard hat out overnight, and in the morning there was a perfect coil of fox poo on the top.

They also used to choose our garden to die in. We buried two in three years..

Looks like dog to me and big dog at that but I suppose there's no scale. I thought foxes did quite small poos like cats?

Cats don't poo like that. As a cat owner I am familiar and I'm really fed up of cats being blamed for foxes disgusting behaviour.

The way to tell if it's fox scat, especially if freshly laid is that it smells really strong - they are 'in the wild' so scent is important to them for all sorts of reasons.
