Are you paying for all your groceries? Is this not shoplifters heaven??

elkagel the woman who runs the scan and shop in our Tesco said they don't stop people using it even if they are found not scanning on several occasions , they just get selected for checks more often . She thinks that lots of stealing occurs and says the most common excuse is ' oh the child must have put it in the bag whist I wasn't watching' , if they get caught .

Meekon - but once you're a regular you hardly ever get stopped (2 years for me and counting) I can't imagine having to unpack it all and repack it again. I just swan out feeling sorry for the people unpacking everything and repacking it and think "why?"

Daughter put some chicken breasts in without scanning the other day - husband didn't realise till he got home.

He scanned the same pack the following week without putting it in the bag to clear his conscience!

I love it, it's much more convenient. I don't shoplift because I'm not a scuzzy shite.

PavlovianLunge · 30/04/2017 23:44

I love it, use it all the time, and always scan everything. I used Tesco's fast payment app for the first time today, it couldn't have been easier.

I love it. I usually do online shopping bit if I want to go to a supermarket I can only get my friend to take me if he knows he gets to play with the 'gun' as he calls it. Normally he moans all the way round, but like with a child (he's 38!) the novelty of scanning stuff keeps him entertained. I always seem to get random checked though and I'very never stolen anything. The only mistake I've made with it was not reading the screen at the till and leaving with 2 pairs of holiday trousers with the security tags still on. They didn't set off the beeper but I didn't realise till the night before I left, so had to Google how to remove them myself.

Always in Waitrose, if I go to another supermarket it feels weird not scanning what you're buying.
To me it is just much more convenient, you keep an eye on what you're spending and it saves masses of time too. it would just never cross my mind to not scan things!

We have seen shoplifting on the self-scan checkouts in ASDA. Woman was beeping one cheap item and packing an expensive item. It looked like a well practiced routine.

The self-service till would know instantly the item was the wrong weight- they go off with a hair trigger UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA when too heavy or not allowing you to proceed further if the weight is under. I should say this has only happened to me when trying to scan and place items legitimately!

GnomeDePlume · 01/05/2017 06:49

elkegel depends on the type of self-scan.

We were on the hybrid checkouts which are more like a self-service belt checkout. They are designed for shoppers to self-scan a trolley load of shopping rather than a basket full. There isnt a weight check on the receiving belt. According to DD who is often supervising on the hybrids this is a fairly common trick.

meekon it is most definitely much quicker , takes a millisecond to scan something , I reckon it takes me less time to scan 4 bags of shopping than it would take me to unpack that shopping onto the conveyer belt ,let alone the cashier scanning and then having to bag it .

I love scan as you shop, once in tesco i got random scan and the woman doing it was chatting away whilst checking and stupidly checked my rice crispies twice (even though there was one) so it flagged up for whole trolly check, it was over £200 shop and took forever, my baby was screaming for a feed , i was super pissed off.
That was 18 months ago, now every time i scan and shop 8/10 im selected for random check Angry

Our local sainsburys hav just started doing it and the hand held machines are much easier so iv started going there
