Are you paying for all your groceries? Is this not shoplifters heaven??

Sammy you have to weigh your fruit and veg and get a sticker which then scans (at tescos anyway).

User2468 · 29/04/2017 20:25

I do it in Waitrose as it's easier than queuing with a toddler, can't say I've ever felt the need to shoplift, there's a security guard and they check your shopping randomly. Life wouldn't be worth living if I got banned from Waitrose!

AngelicaSchuylerChurch · 29/04/2017 20:26

Why would you? Serious question!

MUCH quicker. You can pack at your own pace and sort everything logically rather than shoving things in at speed. Also helps to keep an eye on your overall spend as you get a running total. It's a no-brainer!

ApproachingATunnel · 29/04/2017 20:28

I do scan and shop. I get what you're saying however you get randomly checked. So it's up to you to decide whether the benefits outweigh the risk. I never though it worth the risk, im a wimp!

Witchend · 29/04/2017 20:31

I believe the way it goes is that if you're caught having missed stuff then the "random" checks become much more frequent. if you miss too often they won't let you do it.

I've never missed anything, which is as much luck as skill, but it did mean that I went nearly 18 months in Sainsbury's without being recanned at one point.

harderandharder2breathe · 29/04/2017 20:32

I've done it in Tesco and always pay for everything of course. Because I'm an honest person and a natural follower of rules.

Random checks are frequent anyway.

I did once get picked for a total check and had forgotten to scan a £1 pack of crisps Blush they were fine about it, it was one thing and clearly an honest mistake, plenty of booze more expensive stuff that was scanned properly

HotelEuphoria · 29/04/2017 20:34

Always use it, always scan everything, love it. If you get picked for a random check and you haven't scanned everything they go through everything in your bag, I suspect computer then knows you are dodgy and pulls you in for more checks. These days I reckon I get 1/17 shops for a random check. Always honest. Usually get pulled if I have a bottle of spirits or a tonne of wine.

That's ok with me, nothing to hide.

JaniceBattersby · 29/04/2017 20:35

Ooh I haven't done this but quite fancy it after reading this. My kids always kick off at the checkout so it would be much easier.

Can anyone answer some questions please?

Do I have to register anything before using it for the first time (if so, I'll go without the kids the first time)?
Can I just pack my stuff directly into my IKEA bags in the trolley?
Do I need to do anything at the end or is it just automatically paid for on my card?

Allthewaves · 29/04/2017 20:36

I always do this as saves the horrendous checkout packing while tying to control the small people. When I was preganant I was very forgetful and wrangling two children so did miss scanning things - was picked up twice in random check. Lady was lovely and just meant going to normal checkout and having all stuff put through - after second time I started online shopping until my bump had his first birthday Grin

JaniceBattersby · 29/04/2017 20:37

This would be in Tesco BTW.

AngelicaSchuylerChurch · 29/04/2017 20:39

Janice

You need to have a loyalty card for the relevant supermarket (nectar card, Tesco clubcard etc)

The first time you use it, you need to go to customer services to get your card registered for scan and shop.

Then at the end you either go to the scan and shop checkout and put your scanner on the conveyor (Sainsbury's) or scan a barcode at the self-service tills (Waitrose). Then you pay as normal.

harderandharder2breathe · 29/04/2017 20:39

janice based on Tesco, you just need to have a club card. Yes you pack into your own bags as you go along. No it won't be paid automatically! You must check out at the end which is when a random check may happen and you pay for your shop.

ApproachingATunnel · 29/04/2017 20:40

Janice, at tesco's you need a clubcarc to use it- once you have it in you go, scan your clubcard and take the flashing scanner.
At the end of shopping at the till you scan barcode on them, the till asks you a few questions, you answer, then select your payment method and all done! Really simple

EggysMom · 29/04/2017 20:42

I used to do this in Safeway, I loved that I could pack straight into their green boxes and then lift them into the car, no need to unpack onto a conveyor and then re-pack again. I'd get selected for a full re-scan every five shops or so; not a hassle, at least I'd had four trips that were quicker.

I wish my local supermarkets here would offer it but unfortunately this is scumbag central, no hope as everybody would be shoplifting!

HotelEuphoria · 29/04/2017 20:45
  1. For Tesco you need a Clubcard, you scan it at the entrance and it releases your scanner.
  2. Yes
  3. At Tesco you scan the till, it downloads your shopping deals with any over 18 stuff or unscanned items then you pick pay by card and pay.

Job done.

Haffiana · 29/04/2017 20:45

I do it all the time at Waitrose, even if I am just getting a couple of things. It saves any hassle caused by price tags being missing.

I know for a fact that in Waitrose if you are spot checked (always a full re-scan of your entire trolley, not just a few random items), and it does not match your scan then you will be pulled over for a re-scan fairly often after that.

TheExuberant1 · 29/04/2017 20:48

I tried it once and it took me longer because the scanner kept on scanning things twice. There weren't any staff around and I spent ages trying to undo some of the scanning.

hibbledobble · 29/04/2017 20:49

I've not seen this at any of our local supermarkets, but I wonder if it's because my area isn't nice enough. Is it only offered in certain branches?

herecomesthsun · 29/04/2017 20:53

With 2 small children demanding attention I must have made a mistake or 2, and then kept getting pulled over, so I stopped doing it, bloody nuisance.

user1476194084 · 29/04/2017 20:57

Same as sky earlier - once had a pack of frozen peas that I had forgtten to scan that were checked in the random check - they scanned the whole trolley then and the peas were the only item that had not been scanned. They were happy that it was a mistake (hardly worth stealing peas on a £150 trolley of food) and just added it on. Think I got a random check the next shop as well but it's normally once a month or so and since I don't drink alcohol it really speeds the whole process up. Check out can be done in 2 minutes and my back hurts bending down to take it all out of the trolley at the normal till!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 29/04/2017 21:03

I love it because I stick to a strict budget for food shopping and I can tot it all up as I go along.

GrimmDays · 29/04/2017 21:05

I do it and I love it. I can pack as I go. Scanning keeps the kids quiet. The queues are shorter and faster. I don't have to talk to people. Plenty of reasons. I aways scan everything.

I've been randomly checked a few times but always just a few items. Occasionally they do full trolley scans but I've never had one.

If you've missed something they rescan the shop. They can usually tell by what's missed in a whole shop if it was error or not. I think an error also flags you for extra checks for a while. They can ban persistent offenders from using it.

FiveShelties · 29/04/2017 21:07

I do it in Tesco, I am really careful to scan everything. I have a dread of apearing in the local newspaper charged with stealing some random item. I have had a few checks, normally for a few articles, although I think the second time I used it, it was a thorough check.

It is so easy, quick and as I often have a spend £x and get £x off voucher it means I know exactly when the shopping hits the spend target, or how many bottles of wine I need to get to save £2!

DJBaggySmalls · 29/04/2017 21:08

I do, and I dont nick stuff. I went through the regular checkout with 5 things and they tried to charge me for 4, so I told them and they thanked me for being honest. But as I said, I shop there every week. Why would I want to get banned for shoplifting?

JaniceBattersby · 29/04/2017 21:13

Thank you for answering my questions. I have a clubcard. I'm going tomorrow!
