Who does scan and shop in the supermarket?

Are you paying for all your groceries? Is this not shoplifters heaven??

I have done it at Tesco - and of course I pay for it all.

I have a good friend who works for Tesco, so I know how they manage it.

Under normal circumstances, they will do dip checks and check 5 items in your shop - if more than 2 aren't on, they will rescan your entire shop - at a checkout.

If you're stopped mid-shop and told they're doing a handset (scan thingy) check to ensure any haven't left the store - they AREN'T doing this at all Wink

Brokenbiscuit · 29/04/2017 20:00

I do this. Obviously, I scan everything. I am not a thief.

Chasingsquirrels · 29/04/2017 20:01

I've never seen anyone stopped mid shop!

Mum2jenny · 29/04/2017 20:03

Never scan cos I can't be arsed! Why would you? Serious question!

e1y1 · 29/04/2017 20:03

I've never seen anyone stopped mid shop!

No and you really shouldn't, as that is the most severe level, they have been watching you and not only are they now tracking your movements, your entire shop is going to done at a normal checkout.

Chottie · 29/04/2017 20:04

I shop and scan and of course I pay for everything I buy. I wouldn't not pay, that would be stealing.

dementedpixie · 29/04/2017 20:05

There has only been once that I haven't scanned an item by accident and got the random check. The item was just added on at the till and paid for. I like it as you can also check prices if no price is on the shelf. The only annoying thing is if you have alcohol you need to wait for someone to authorise the sale for you plus the random checks all seem to happen at the same time. Dh once had to have the whole Christmas shopping trolley rescanned which took ages

Chasingsquirrels · 29/04/2017 20:07

I find it is quicker - items straight into the bag, scan the barcode and pay - no need to unload onto the convertor belt and then repack. Even with the random checks they only do a few items so still quicker than a normal till.
Plus I don't have to interact with people.
Plus the queues are usually shorter - I rarely get to pay and find all the tills occupied, whereas I rarely see a free standard till as I walk past them. And always queues for the self scan tills - I always do scan & shop even if I'm just getting a couple of items.

CotswoldStrife · 29/04/2017 20:07

Why scan? Because you only have to pack once (straight into shopping bag) and children LOVE it! Keeps them quiet and happy scanning the items.

I use it a lot and get random scanned occasionally, sometimes the whole trolley but mostly just 5 items. The staff are fairly quick at recognising the 'ping' apart from one staff member who has to be interrupted from her conversation to work Angry

Ginmakesitallok · 29/04/2017 20:07

I use it at tesco- of course I scan everything, I'm not a thief. I use it because it's much quicker than going through the ordinary tills.

FlaviaAlbia · 29/04/2017 20:09

what would happen if there is something you haven't scanned?

The checkouts ask if there's anything you couldn't scan and you can select yes which will bring staff over to help. Bread from the bakery can be fiddly depending how the bar codes have been stuck on.

Badbadbunny · 29/04/2017 20:09

No different to self service checkouts.

Freshprincess · 29/04/2017 20:10

I do It (scanning not the shoplifting) that you can pack the bags as you go and there's never a queue at the till.

If you had something small, at the bottom of the bag with loads of other stuff on top you might get away with it. Assuming that random checker only asks for a few items.

CateGory8 · 29/04/2017 20:10

I do it because it because I don't have to speak to anyone and can keep an eye on what I'm spending.

I also like the fact that the items I'm buying are packed directly into my own bags as I go around the supermarket. Scan and shop is so much faster and I'm never tempted to 'forget to scan'.

Tesco make random checks and I think I went about 6 months without a check only to be checked twice in one week.

LettuceMash · 29/04/2017 20:14

Yeah its great. My shopping bill has dropped by a third since I started doing my own scanning Wink

Floralnomad · 29/04/2017 20:15

I do scan and shop at Tesco all the time and I always scan every item . If you get stopped on a random check and something's not been scanned they then take you aside and scan every item . It's so quick and convenient I often wonder why everybody doesn't do it .

PhyllisNights · 29/04/2017 20:15

"I do it because it because I don't have to speak to anyone."

Absolutely! I cannot be doing with fake smiles and small talk. I'd rather get in and out without any human interaction as quickly as possible.

fuzzywuzzy · 29/04/2017 20:15

I get random checked when I'm doing a fun shop, a trolley full of biscuits, chocolates, sweets, cakes etc.

The random checks don't happen often and I've never been found not to have scanned something.

HashiAsLarry · 29/04/2017 20:16

We do it. If they pick something that hasn't been scanned they rescan your entire shop, as we found out when DH failed to scan the last item that went into the bag one time. A bag of tomatoes the pillock. We got a few extra checks for a while after that, but now we just get them randomly again.

Sparklingbrook · 29/04/2017 20:17

Always. It's the only way. Why would you fill your trolley, empty it onto the conveyor and fill your trolley again if you don't have to?
You can pack it all very neatly as you go and avoid the checkout queues and chatter.

And yes, I scan everything. Why wouldn't you?

Moussemoose · 29/04/2017 20:18

Why do it? Didn't you read. You pack your bags and NO ONE ELSE touches them!

cuckooplusone · 29/04/2017 20:20

I love scanning as I can pack as I go and not queue. Plus I can keep an eye on spending as I go, the scanner beeps when there is an offer I may have missed and gives a running total. It never occurred to me to steal anything! Sometimes things don't scan and I do them at the end at the till (or swap for something that does work).

splendide · 29/04/2017 20:21

I do it all the time (couple of times a week) and have never been checked, I guess it's just a fluke.

I love it! DS holds the scanner and I pack straight into the buggy.

thisisillyria · 29/04/2017 20:21

I use it in Tesco & get random checks from time to time. Wouldn't dream of not scanning something, but did get caught out once when I put two tins of beans in & only scanned one, completely by accident. Had to have the whole lot re-scanned. Supervisor was furious with me - completely accepted it was a genuine mistake, but she was supposed to be going on her break & had to deal with my trolleyful before she could go. I felt sorry for her, but I hadn't done it on purpose!

Sammysquiz · 29/04/2017 20:23

I've never considered doing this, I don't know why as I love a gadget. Do you have to weigh all your fruit & veg though?
