Are you paying for all your groceries? Is this not shoplifters heaven??

The thing is, if they find you haven't scanned something, they just rescan, adjust your bill and put it down to human error.

You don't get banned or charged with shoplifting unless you had a whole trolley of unscanned wine and cheese or something.

I have nicked the odd item.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/04/2017 21:14

I do it if I'm by myself and used to get the DCs doing it when they were younger, they loved it. However now they are a bit older we split and they go off and get things and bring them back, it's easy to lose track and miss something when they come back with an armful and start loading bags. DS and I got caught with an unscanned tin in Sainsburys recently, they were fine about it but had to do a total rescan of a huge trolley load and I got a rescan next time I went in too. So I tend to only use it when I'm on my own now.

Voice0fReason · 29/04/2017 21:17

Love it. So much easier and quicker. Occasional checks are no big deal. Never caught any mistakes so I don't get checked very often.

ShelaghTurner · 29/04/2017 21:40

I love it and actively seek out supermarkets that have it. Tesco much better than Sainsbury's as you still have to queue up at a till in Sainsbury's. Am only ever checked once in a blue moon and I don't steal stuff, why would I? It makes my life so much easier and quicker. Hate having to go through the whole checkout shenanigans.

SpeckledyHen · 29/04/2017 21:45

I have been doing if in Waitrose for about 20 years and love it . Only been rescanned half a dozen times .

On one occasion there was a problem with the scanner when I came to check- out and I had to put everything through a till after all . When I got to the end I was told that there would be no charge (£80) ' As its called Quick Check madam and it wasn't ' A great result .

CointreauVersial · 29/04/2017 21:47

I do this in Waitrose, but I only ever do top-up shops there. I don't bother with a basket or trolley, just shove groceries straight into a bag, then a quick pay, and away.

I have never been checked, nor have I seen them check anyone else. Not that I'm worried - I'm very careful to scan everything.

GnomeDePlume · 29/04/2017 21:53

Love it. We do scan and shop in Tesco. The queue on the scan and shop tills is always very short or non-existent.

We have seen shoplifting on the self-scan checkouts in ASDA. Woman was beeping one cheap item and packing an expensive item. It looked like a well practiced routine. It was actually quite interesting to watch - like seeing a card trick.

It was DH who spotted it. He works for the company. Called over the checkout supervisor and very discretely suggested she might like to keep an eye on this particular till. Checkut supervisor came and stood at the end of the the checkout. After that the women played it straight.

DD worked for Waitrose for a while and said that it was very common for very respectable looking people to try and pocket cosmetics. Which is why the cosmetics aisle is seldom staff-free.

ALemonyPea · 29/04/2017 21:56

I love it, it's so much easier to pack as you shop, and it allows me to pack my bag with my specific packing order and not be rushed at the tills.

I'd never not scan anything though. I live in fear that I've not scanned something and get randomly checked and found out.

lazycrazyhazy · 29/04/2017 22:11

Huge fan here. When I first started I seemed to get checked a lot but now haven't been in a couple of years. I think as it's all computerised and there'd be an alert if every time a particular person came in, say a bottle of whisky disappeared!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/04/2017 22:16

I do it. I've only shoplifted once accidentally - DS had the scanner and I had the trolley, he pottered off to get something from another aisle and I picked up a box of heat patches to be scanned when he returned, and then got sidetracked - only realised I hadn't scanned them when I got home and checked the receipt! I felt awful but it has made me double check everything now.

lazycrazyhazy · 29/04/2017 22:16

There was a prosecution which made headlines where some guy regularly scanned cheap items whilst bagging expensive ones. I don't know how long he got away with it but they got him.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 29/04/2017 22:35

I love scan and shop, but don't shop at Tesco anymore and they don't do it in Asda or Morrisons here.

It's so easy and you don't have to talk to anyone (I don't like people)

I've never forgotten to scan anything, just had random checks. And no rushing my to pack stuff as they're pushing it through at light speed. I've packed it all nicely and can go home.

Aaah, I miss it!

Meekonsandwich · 30/04/2017 01:40

I really don't see the benefit of it??? How does it save you time? Finding and scanning each individual barcode and then getting stopped to search your bags regularly??

What's the appeal?

If you wanted to know how much you're spending use a calculator, or round it up to the nearest pound and you'll always spend less than you think.
Checkout is never more than 5 minutes unless it's Christmas time, I can't see how scanning every item yourself with a hand held machine is time effective?!

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/04/2017 02:27

It takes no time at all to scan items as you put them in bags in your trolley and no need to unload it all onto a conveyor belt and then rebag it, just go up to a till and pay. There are never any queues at the scanner checkouts as it is so quick. I've had a rescan twice in about 4 years in Waitrose and the incident in Sainsburys mentioned at 21.14 is my only glitch in 6 months of using them there. Saves loads of time.

IDoNotHaveTheFoggiest · 30/04/2017 02:32

I used to at Sainsbury's but I had to empty everything out the first five times so not only had to pack twice but unloading it was a pain. Gave up in the end.

ShelaghTurner · 30/04/2017 02:47

How can you not see that it saves time? Takes a second to find the barcode and scan the straight into bag. Another minute at the checkout and you're out. DH had my car keys with my Clubcard tag on one day last week so had to do it the old fashioned way. Was fuming all the way round and it took a good bit longer.

showmeislands · 30/04/2017 05:34

I do it in my local Tesco, several times a week. It's quick and easy. Have never been checked and not seen anyone else be either, but there is a staff member always standing around between the 8 self-scanning tills, so maybe they think that's deterrent enough.

elkegel · 30/04/2017 05:47

I've had a rescan but it just randomly selects you, rather than based on one item that didn't scan. Haven't had a rescan for ages, so I am probably due one. I can't imagine they would be too bothered about a slight error (all mine have been perfect!) but if you leave out a number of items it would look rather suspicious. I imagine they would withdraw the facility from you if you kept abusing it, and if you make an "error" with a number of items you'd get rescanned a lot.

elkegel · 30/04/2017 05:53

I find it more calm and ordered, Meekon. No race to grab and pack items higgedly piggledy as they scoot to the end of the belt, no long queue and frustration at a checkout (it is often busy near me and if it is a quiet time they reduce the number of checkouts so you still have to queue) and it helps keep costs under control. It certainly saves time unpacking at the other end as well.

Ifailed · 30/04/2017 06:23

Don't know if they implemented it, but one major chain was looking at a method of tracking where the handset is in the store, so if you went down the booze aisle, for example, but didn't scan anything you'd be flagged up for a check.

scaryclown · 30/04/2017 06:26

I think it's great. I can't wait for the time when we also have to drive to the regional distribution centre and split pallets.

fuzzywuzzy · 30/04/2017 06:29

Ifailed, that would be a pain, when I shop I like going down aisles looking at stuff and then impulse buying, or sometimes not getting anything from that aisle would be annoying if I went down the clothing aisle didn't buy anything then got checked for it!

I must go down at least one aisle I don't buy anything from each time I shop!

Iris65 · 30/04/2017 06:29

It never occurred to me to steal when using scan and shop. My mother marched me back to a shop when I was four when she discovered I had picked up a matchbox car that hadn't been paid for. I learned my lesson.

Lindy2 · 30/04/2017 06:35

I usually scan as I shop. I can keep track of what I spend, I can see that special offers have been applied properly, my scanner tells me if an item I've put in is part of a special offer eg. bogof, I only need to pack once and there's never a queue at the pre scanned tills. I find it much more speedy. The randon checks take a few minutes at most and don't bother me at all.
I scan and pay for everything. I have never been tempted to get a criminal record and loose my job for the sake of stealing a few groceries. Also, the lady who often does the random checks at my store is another school mum who I chat to! 😂

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 30/04/2017 06:45

I don't. I used to work in the Dotcom department for Tesco, picking people's groceries. Just looking at those scanners makes my feet hurt.
