AIBU to be annoyed: JoJo wellies last 3 weeks. Shop says they're not supposed to last...

Bought a £18 pair of JoJoMamanBebe wellies 3 weeks ago. By last weekend the sides had split on both boots (about 5cm long split) and water and sand were pouring into DS (3)'s wellies.

Previous JoJo wellies have outlasted 2 kids so I assumed this was a freak occurrence/materials issue. Returned them today, no receipt, shop lovely about exchanging them no problem - but then went on to admit there've been a number of similar returns and Head Office says they're "fashion boots" and not meant to be used seriously. If you want proper wellies you have to go to an outdoor shop apparently!

Given previous models lasted years, the price, and the fact that kids' wellies are going to get a hard time and should be designed for such use, AIBU to be shocked by Head Office's attitude? He's had them 3 weeks, but he's only worn them a few days within that... so basically I've bought £18 disposable wellies.

A warning: If your kids actually want to wear their wellies, you might want to avoid JoJo in future.

That's just daft. Why would they be wearing wellies unless it's raining or muddy?

It's standard. Joules and Hunter are the same.

All rubber perishes, and unless you spend £££ on Le Chams or Aigle they cant really guarantee them.

I got about 4 years out of Joules wellies as they offer a quibble free 12 month guarantee. I knew they'd only last me 9-10 month max as I dog walk lots, so I just took them in and kept exhanging them when they split Grin

Next stop - b and m! Branded stuff is no better and is often worse, because you are paying for name not materials.

Might be a public service to post on their twitter feed though....( evil grin)

Go to Asda or Tescos, they will last and are cheaper. Asda do some lovely ones.

Of course it's not standard! Even dunlop cheapies normally last a few years.

Yes, I will head over to Twitter. I posted a review on the JoJo site and now see I am not the only one to have these boots fail within days.

DS2's Jojo wellies lasted him forever; I took them into school as he outgrew each pair to be used in the outdoor classroom. They're not usually that rubbish.

DS1 had a pair from Asda when he was 8 that are the most invincible wellies on earth. They've gone through at least 4 friends DCs (they're Darth Vader ones so DCs love them) and are indestructible. Hunter and Joules ones my DCs can ruin after a month at the stables; they're not work wellies at all.

That's actually ridiculous. Would you escalate to trading standards? Goods are required to be fit for purpose for a reasonable length of time. If they are sold as fashion boots with a note saying don't get them wet, then they might be within the realms of legal but other than that, if they are advertised as rain boots, you should have a reasonable expectation of being able to wear them in the rain.

3 weeks is not a reasonable length of time, unless they are dressing up shoes.

(Would be interesting to note whether you are charged tax on them, because I believe dressing up clothes are classed as toys, whereas children's shoes are tax free.)

Their website says they are suitable for spending all day splashing in puddles, if they are letting in water they are faulty & not fit for purpose. They should refund.

Startrite mud busters are the only wellies I have found that last. The jojo ones were especially crap.

Yeah... that's not on. Perhaps they have recently changed suppliers. They are definitely being sold as all weather shoes. So they should stand up!

They replaced (and would presumably refund no problem), staff were lovely. Then they said they're feeding the complaints they've had back to Head Office, but Head Office are telling them they're fashion boots... It's the Head Office attitude I find utterly ridiculous.

DS loves his dinosaur wellies so we're swapped for another pair. If these split too then we'll have to persuade him to try a different design in another shop.

The reason I don't buy pish wellies is they are shit. I laugh internally when I see people in joules or hunter wellies because they ae not worth a fraction of the price they cost. Basic green wellies2 all the way.

Joules are as bad. Mine leaked from day one just walking on wet grass. Joules replaced the first time and second pair the same. Then said they were fashion wellies, refused to replace because they lost the wellies I sent back recorded delivery and blamed the post office who said it was Joules. Joules also refused to publish my perfectly polite and honest review so don't trust their website.

I bought Dunlops 30 years ago for a fiver and they're still going strong. Done me through gardening, muddy walks with children, scout camps and all.

£18 is a cheap pair of shoes.

And Dunlop are really good quality wellies, I'd recommend them all day long.

I'm not saying it's right, but it is what it is. You'd have every right to be up in arms if they refused to refund/replace, but they always will do as the customer facing team are nearly always great.

My hunters are ten years old and still going strong! I was going to buy a pair for someone as a birthday gift but maybe not after seeing this, they must have changed!
