Was I unreasonable to dob someone in?

NC as this might be quite outing.

I commute to work on the train. I get on at stop A and off at stop D, both of which have ticket barriers. I always buy a ticket when I travel.

Stops B and C don't have ticket barriers.

A man got on at Stop B. The inspector came around asking for anyone who got on at Stop B. The inspector was very visible and called out "Stop B passengers" loudly enough for everyone to hear. The man didn't have headphones in. Yet, the man didn't show his ticket.

So, as the inspector passed I pointed out the man and said he'd got on at Stop B. Inspector then went to check his ticket and what a surprise the man didn't have one.

The man called me an interfering bitch. Meh, yeah, that's pretty accurate but it fucks me off that people feel as though buying a ticket is optional. It's not. You're using a service, you need to pay for it.

So was I unreasonable to dob this guy in?

The odd person not paying for their ticket has almost no impact (probably none at all) on ticket prices.

The odd person, no. But if we all did it, then it would.

What's stopping people not paying except barriers and inspectors doing their job?

JustAKitten

User so we just all smile nicely, toe the line and let the elites keep fucking us over.

Oh for pity's sake, how simplistic can you get.

BastardGoDarkly · 27/04/2017 14:16

When did you remember that you knew he's an architect op? Hmm

Increasinglymiddleaged · 27/04/2017 14:16

Oh yes and southern rail is a whole new level

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 14:16

User, your argument is that those oppressed should never resort to anything morally questionable because it makes them "just as bad".

BoffinMum · 27/04/2017 14:17

That's pretty cool babyhamish Grin

Lweji · 27/04/2017 14:17

JustAKitten

How many banks have to robbed recently? None? You are condoning their evil practices too.

I hope you fare dodge regularly too.

Lweji · 27/04/2017 14:18

Damn.

... have you robbed...

KoolKoala07 · 27/04/2017 14:18

Had op reported somebody shoplifting goods from a shop you'd all be saying she's nbu for reporting but because she reporting somebody effectively stealing by not paying for a ticket she's bu. Good on you op, I get pissed off working my arse off for people not willing to pay their own way.

user1489179512 · 27/04/2017 14:18

Bet she does fare dodge. Tut tut

Lweji No, I don't rob banks.

I do it occasionally. If it's a short journey or one I know there's little staff on I will.

The less of my money that goes to them the better

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 14:20

I don't know anyone who'd behave like this either Confused

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 14:21

You might think that KoolKoala but there also seems to be a large majority on here who are quite happy with shoplifting as well.

The question was asked, but not answered, at what point they draw the line. I mean I guess it's OK to nick from Tescos but what about the independent fruit and veg stall? Still OK? No, they don't want to answer that.

user1489179512 · 27/04/2017 14:21

Charming. You are a thief.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 14:23

Sometimes I don't show my ticket when they do this yelling out for 'everyone from stop such and such' thing, purely because I can't be bothered hauling my ticket out yet again when i've already had a check and know that I have to go through barriers at my destination.

PrivatePike -they don't want to see your ticket again. That is why they ask for tickets from stations further down the line.

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 14:23

Literally every individual has broken at least minor laws. It's hilarious that people will get arsey about fare dodging yet have probably driven faster than the limit or committed other minor offenses.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 14:24

We're talking about theft here though Kitten not speeding.

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 14:26

Rebecca my point is almost every individual commits minor offenses. So the judgemental comments are a bit hypocritical

JustAKitten · 27/04/2017 14:26

And it's not theft it's fraudulent use of a service. Different offenses in different Acts.

KayTee87 · 27/04/2017 14:27

The thing is, I wouldn't fare skip, shoplift etc. I have returned money when given too much change. I'm pretty black and white in my morals. However I think it's nasty to snitch (yes, snitch user) on someone for doing something that isn't hurting me.

Do you have any friends OP?

My money is on 'no'.

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 14:28

I don't get the judgemental bit - it's either breaking the law or not. There's no judgement involved: you need a valid ticket to travel. If you haven't got one then you are guilty of fraud (thanks for that bit of info though, I didn't know that Smile).

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 27/04/2017 14:29

PrivatePike ahh sorry, - that does seem peculiar and a bit of a waste of time.

Perhaps they were plagued by fare dodgers at some point Grin
